Amazon unveils $199 Kindle Fire tablet (AP)

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Wednesday showed off the Kindle Fire, a $199 tablet computer, challenging Apple's iPad by extending its Kindle brand into the world of full-color, multipurpose devices.

Bezos also took the opportunity to show off a new line of Kindle e-readers with black-and-white screens and lower prices, further pressuring competitors like Barnes & Noble Inc. that are trying to break Amazon.com Inc.'s dominance in electronic book sales.

The Kindle Fire will go on sale Nov. 15. It's about half the size of the iPad, making it a close match with Barnes & Noble's Nook Color tablet, which came out last year. But while Barnes & Noble sees the Nook Color as jazzed-up e-reader, Amazon has broader goals for the Fire, as a platform for games, movies, music and other applications.

Even before its release, the Kindle Fire was heralded as a worthy competitor to Apple's iPad. Amazon is nearly unique in its ability to sell content such as e-books, movies and music suited for a tablet ? just like Apple Inc. does.

Still, competing with Apple won't be easy. Many have tried to copy the iPad's success, but it remains the overwhelming front-runner in the tablet computer category. Apple sold 28.7 million of them from April 2010 to June 2011. Analysts at research firm Gartner Inc. expect the iPad to account for three out of four tablet sales this year.

"Some of the companies that have made tablets and put them on the market ... the reason they haven't been successful is because they made tablets. They didn't make services," Bezos said in an interview. "So what we've done is really integrate seamlessly all of our media offerings ? video, movies, TV, apps, games, magazines, games and so on."

Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said selling all that content makes the Fire is the only credible competitor to the iPad this year.

"In theory, Sony could do something similar, but they haven't, and it doesn't look like they will. They have a tablet, but they only went halfway on the services," she said.

Analysts had expected the Fire to go on sale for about $250. Epps called the $199 price "jaw-droppingly low," and said it would introduce tough competition not just for Apple, but for contending tablet makers like Samsung Electronics Co., Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. and HTC Corp.

Analysts had speculated Amazon would subsidize the tablet, counting on making back some money through book and movie sales. But Bezos said the company is content with a slim profit margin.

"We want the hardware device to be profitable and the content to be profitable. We really don't want to subsidize one with the other," Bezos said in the interview on the sidelines of the New York press event.

Epps believes Amazon will sell 3 million to 5 million Fires before the end of the year, but the late shipping date will probably skew the figure to the lower end of the range, she said.

The Fire runs a version of Google Inc.'s Android software, used by other iPad wannabes, and will have access to applications through Amazon's Android store. It lacks the cameras sported by practically every competing tablet. It also lacks a slot for memory expansion, a common feature on other Android tablets.

Amazon's cheapest new Kindle will cost $79, and dispenses with the keyboard the Kindles have carried since the first model launched in 2007.

For $99, Amazon is also bringing out the first black-and-white Kindle with a touch screen; it's reminiscent of Barnes & Noble's latest Nook. A version with access to AT&T's cellular network will cost $149. Versions without advertising cost an extra $30 to $40. Bezos said the models subsidized by advertising have been the most popular.

Previously, the cheapest Kindle cost $114, with advertising. That price was reduced Wednesday to $99.

Bezos said he doesn't see the Fire as eventually replacing the Kindles.

"What will happen is people will buy both. Because they're really for different purposes ... For people who are into reading, it makes sense to have a device that's purpose-built," he said.

UPDATE: Philosophy Major Held in Gun Scare - Chatsworth, CA Patch

UPDATE, 2:25 p.m.: A Cal State Northridge philosophy student was facing a possible charge of making criminal threats for allegedly mumbling that he had a gun and saying "that he planned to use it,'' prompting a partial campus shutdown, officials said Wednesday. Gahren Moradian, 22, of Burbank surrendered to authorities about 8 p.m. Tuesday, Christina Villalobos of CSUN told City News Service.

A young man who allegedly may have muttered something about a gun in or near Cal State Northridge's library was booked after surrendering to campus police Tuesday night.

Those reported comments led to an evacuation of the campus' Oviatt Library Tuesday.

CSUN spokeswoman Carmen Ramos Chandler said she could not say exactly when or where the suspect turned himself in, but a tweet from the Daily Sundial student newspaper said a person of interest surrendered at about 8 p.m.

Los Angeles police at the Devonshire Station said that the man was? booked by campus police at CSUN, but it was unclear for what. A name typically becomes public information once a person is booked in a crime.

By 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, an automated Robocall alerted students and parents that the university had called an "all clear."

The young man was the subject of a manhunt as the university's library was evacuated and searched. The LAPD bomb squad and K-9 units were called in as police swept the building.

University officials posted a photo of the suspect on the CSUN website and Facebook page. It was a rear-view image, taken by a student, of a young man wearing a white T-shirt with the words "Human Rights Violation" in hand-lettering.

Campus police got word of someone talking about a gun at about 10:30 a.m., triggering a search. The campus, however, remained open.

Chandler said someone asked the man if he was OK, and that was when he said he had a gun, though none was seen.

Students and parents were alerted by an automated Robocall and this text message:

This is an emergency notification (Oviatt Library) message for the California State University, Northridge community. At 10:27 this morning University police received information of a white male 5'8 wearing a white tee shirt that says "human rights violation", of?potential middle eastern descent, short spiky hair, short jeans, indicated he had a gun. University police are currently conducting a thorough search of the Oviatt library. Campus is advised to be on the lookout for this individual. If seen - do not approach and contact Police at?818-677-2111. Further information will be released as available.

A fire alarm was pulled in the library to initiate the evacuation. ?There were police at the exits watching us leave,? English major Eduard Cabanban told the Daily Sundial. ?People were confused and just grabbed their stuff and left. I was just real concerned about what was going on.?

By about 1 p.m., police had made an initial sweep of the library. Dogs and their handlers were then sent in.

By mid-afternoon, police escorted students into the library to retrieve personal items left inside, CSUN security guard Augustine Castaneda told the Sundial.

The LAPD and California Highway Patrol searched the campus and surrounding area and found nothing suspicious, Chandler told the Sundial.

WHO: Iran, South Asia worst for city air pollution (AP)

GENEVA ? Cities in Iran, India, Pakistan and the capital of Mongolia rank among the worst on the planet for air pollution, while those in the U.S. and Canada are among the best, according to the first global survey released Monday by the World Health Organization.

The southwest Iranian city of Ahvaz walked away with the unfortunate distinction of having the highest measured level of airborne particles smaller than 10 micrometers.

WHO released the list to highlight the need to reduce outdoor air pollution, which is estimated to cause 1.34 million premature deaths each year. The global body said investments to lower pollution levels quickly pay off due to lower disease rates and, therefore, lower healthcare costs.

The list, which relies on country-reported data over the past several years, measures the levels of airborne particles smaller than 10 micrometers ? so-called PM10s ? for almost 1,100 cities.

WHO recommends an upper limit of 20 micrograms for PM10s, which can cause serious respiratory problems in humans. They are mostly sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide from power plants, auto exhausts and industry.

Ahvaz's annual average of PM10s was 372 micrograms per cubic meter. Heavy industry and low-quality vehicle fuel are the main causes of air pollution in this desert city of 1.3 million.

The study found that the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator had an annual average PM10s density of 279 micrograms per cubic meter, followed by another west Iranian city, Sanandaj, with 254 micrograms.

Cities in Pakistan and India, such as Quetta and Kanpur, as well as Botswana's capital Gaborone, also ranked high on the pollution scale.

Mohammad Hasan, 39, of Karachi, Pakistan, said attempts to improve air quality in the port city of 18 million ? such as by replacing heavily polluting buses with vehicles using compressed natural gas ? are being undermined by bigger polluters who are "playing havoc with the lives of Karachi populace."

"Industries and factories are emitting thick clouds of smoke, and no government agency is out there to check them or correct them," the bank employee said.

WHO said the reasons for high pollution levels varied, but that often rapid industrialization and the use of poor quality fuels for transportation and electricity generation are to blame.

In India, major metropolitan areas such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata have banned the construction of new power plants within city limits, and existing ones are being shut down or relocated.

But at the same time, a lack of public transport has led to an explosion of privately owned cars and SUVs as the economy booms, with the number of heavily polluting diesel vehicles increasing 10-fold as diesel is highly subsidized by the government.

At the other end of the list are cities in Canada and the United States, which benefit from lower population density, favorable climates and stricter air pollution regulation.

Yukon territory's capital Whitehorse had a yearly average of just 3 micrograms of PM10s per cubic meter, while Santa Fe, New Mexico, measured 6 micrograms.

"It's absolutely wonderful," said Whitehorse Mayor Bev Buckway. "A lot of people come up north and they smell the air and the say "'Oh wow. Amazing. The air smells so good,'" she said. "And we tend to take it for granted because we just have that all the time."

Santa Fe Mayor David Coss said Monday that he's pleased but not surprised as the city consistently gets high rankings from the American Lung Association.

He said the clean air is one of the things he loves about living in Santa Fe.

Washington, D.C., had a level of 18 micrograms, Tokyo measured 23 micrograms, and Paris had 38 micrograms of PM10s per cubic meter.

WHO also released a shorter table comparing levels of even finer dust particles, known as PM2.5s. The level considered harmful there is 10 micrograms per cubic meter.

This list contained no measurements from Asia apart from Ulan Bator, which again ranked worst with 63.0 micrograms.

his enthusiasm and his burning energy to the pursuit of a breakneck sport.?

Briggs Swift Cunningham II was born to race, and left his mark most notably in the realms of auto and yacht racing.? Born in 1907 and hailing from a wealthy Ohioan family ? his father had interests in railways, meat-packing, commercial real estate, founded Citizens? National Bank, and was the chief financier of two young developers named William Cooper Procter and James Norris Gamble ? Cunningham, or ?Mr. C,? was the kind of moneyed gentleman sportsman who dedicated his life to winning.

As a child Cunningham summered in the Northeast, where his love for sailing was born.? After his family relocated to Southport, CT he joined the Pequot Yacht Club at the age of 17, thus beginning a love affair with yachting that would last over 30 years.? He entered Yale to become an engineer, but it didn?t stick.? He left university and married first wife Lucy Bedford, daughter of a Standard Oil heir, whose enthusiasm for sport and yachting ? and money to burn ? matched his own and on their honeymoon they travelled the world, attending regattas and watching the Monaco Grand Prix.? Monaco would spark the beginning of Cunningham?s love of auto racing.? He spent the years before WWII racing the seas and cars and getting his pilot?s license.? He was also an excellent shot.? When he was turned down by the US Navy on account of his age and asthma, he just bought his own aircraft and flew anti-submarine patrols along the eastern seaboard with the Civil Air Patrol and US Coast Guard throughout the war instead.

After the war, he turned his attention to auto racing, with an eye on competing ? and winning, of course ? in the 24-hour races at Le Mans, France with American cars and drivers.? In 1950 he entered the race with two modified Cadillac Coupe de Villes against a field of Ferraris, Aston Martins and Jaguars and managed to come in 10th and 11th.? The next year he returned with a car he designed and built himself.? That car failed to finish in 1951, but the design he introduced the 1952 season was his most successful and considered by many to be the first true American sports car: the Cunningham C-4R.? The C-4R finished fourth at Le Mans ? Cunningham himself drove 20 of the 24 hours because his partner was ill! ? with Cunningham (and American automotive manufacturing) earning the esteem of the European racing establishment.

We have Cunningham to thank for a very familiar racing color scheme.? In 1950, when he entered his first race at Le Mans, America did not yet have an established national racing color, so he picked one ? white with two broad blue stripes that stretched the length of the car.? The stripes were called ?Cunningham stripes? for years.? Cunningham continued to manufacture cars until 1955 and they remain highly prized by collectors, as evidenced by the excitement surrounding the discovery of the final missing C-3 ? one of only 25 cars manufactured ? in a Connecticut barn just a few weeks ago.

Then, in 1958, Cunningham was tapped to skipper the American yacht Columbia in the America?s Cup, leading to a rout of the British challenger, Sceptre, 4-0.? In September of that same year, LIFE photographer George Silk captured some amazing images of the yacht race and teams in Newport, RI.

After his victory at the America?s Cup in 1958, Cunningham continued to sail the Columbia, as a member of the New York Yacht Club.? As was typical for Cunningham, he also managed to introduce a technical innovation to sailing in the form of a now-commonly used device called the ?Cunningham? that adjusts sail tension.

Cunningham continued to race at Le Mans into the 1960s, but instead drove Corvettes, Maseratis and Jaguars.? As he grew older he sold off his collection of cars in the late 1980s.? He parted with his libraries of motoring and yacht books, his art collection and his models in the early 1990s, much of it going to the Herreshoff Marine Museum & America?s Cup Hall of Fame in Bristol, Rhode Island.? Music Review: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Winterland (Highlights ...

On Thursday, October 10, 1968, Jimi Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding walked on stage for the first of six shows in three days at the legendary Winterland concert hall in San Francisco. The Jimi Hendrix Experience would rotate 18 different songs over the course of the six shows. The tape machines were rolling and all six performances were recorded for posterity.

Experience Hendrix LLC and Legacy Recordings have been reissuing the Hendrix catalogue. Four new titles were released September 13. Hendrix In The West, Jimi Hendrix: The Dick Cavett Show, Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle Of Wight, and Winterland have all been reissued.

Winterland comes in a variety of forms. There is the deluxe four-disc box set for the Hendrix fan who wants everything. There is the eight-disc, 12 inch, 180 gram audio LP box set for Hendrix purists. Then there is the subject of this review, Winterland (Highlights), for the person who only wants a taste of the concerts without straining the budget.

Yes the four CD box set is a superior release due to the quantity of the tracks. Various versions of many of the songs allow the listener to hear the differences and nuances that Hendrix would bring to his performances. The one disc highlight set is more controlled and less complicated as the 11 tracks present Hendrix at his live best with just one performance of each song. He was just shy of his 26th birthday and was on the verge of super stardom. He had honed his concert skills by endless touring and the included tracks find his stage act mature and well developed.

The single disc contains a generous dose of Hendrix as he combines some of his classic songs with covers of other artist's material.

"Fire" and "Foxy Lady" begin the disc in a rocking way and set the tempo for what will follow. "Are You Experienced" and "Purple Haze" both show the tightness of the three musicians. Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" at 11 minutes and "Here My Train A Comin'" at 12 minutes, give Hendrix the room to stretch out and improvise. A controlled "Little Wing" and an almost out of control "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" were concert staples for most of his career.

The most interesting track was Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love." It's interesting to compare the guitar solos of Hendrix and Clapton as they were very different in approach and style.

Winterland (Highlights) is an excellent overview of his six shows at the old ballroom and as it captures him at a transition point in his career. It is an economical alternative to the larger and more expensive sets.

Dugard sues feds over failure to monitor abductor (AP)

MENLO PARK, Calif. ? Jaycee Dugard sued the federal government Thursday for failing to monitor the convicted sex offender who kidnapped her and held her captive for 18 years.

The complaint filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco said the mistakes by federal parole officers in the handling of Phillip Garrido's case are as "outrageous and inexcusable as they are numerous."

Had federal parole officers done their jobs, Dugard's lawyers allege, Dugard and her daughters would not have had to endure their years of captivity in a ramshackle compound tucked inside Garrido's Antioch backyard.

Garrido, who was convicted in 1977 of raping and kidnapping a 25-year-old woman, was on parole and under federal supervision when he kidnapped Dugard in 1991. He fathered Dugard's two children while he and his wife, Nancy, held her captive. The pair was been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping and rape charges in the case.

The complaint alleges that the federal government's negligence allowed Garrido to be free to kidnap Dugard. The complaint said federal authorities were aware he was still dangerous yet failed to revoke his parole and send him back to prison.

The complaint lists a number of incidences of alleged misconduct by federal authorities from failing to get Garrido proper mental health treatment to not providing adequate information to state authorities when he was transferred to their charge.

It says Garrido tested positive for drugs and alcohol while on parole, a violation for a sex offender, but was never punished. It also says authorities ignored reports of sexual misconduct, including a complaint that Garrido showed up at his former victim's work and made an "alarming" comment to her.

"Inexplicably, the federal parole authorities responsible for Garrido's direct supervision disregarded the victim's concerns as mere hysteria," the documents say.

After the incident, Garrido's counselor recommended electronic monitoring, but his parole officer disregarded it as "too much of a hassle," according to the complaint.

The documents also allege federal parole officers did not follow up on a sexual harassment complaint by one of Garrido's co-workers.

"With this type of resume, it is hard to imagine that Garrido, a parolee classified as `High Activity' supervision, would have received anything other than the utmost scrutiny and supervision by federal parole authorities," the complaint says. "Garrido, however, received nothing of the sort."

The documents say authorities went several months without checking on him and visited his residence less than a dozen times in the 10 years they supervised him.

"Had federal parole authorities demonstrated a modicum of vigilance ... Jaycee and her daughters would not have been forced to endure a virtual lifetime of physical and mental abuse," the lawyers said.

Dugard is seeking unspecified damages from the federal complaint that she says she will donate to her nonprofit organization to help other victims.

She and her daughters already have received a $20 million settlement from the state of California for the failings of its law enforcement. The state took over Garrido's parole supervision in 1999.

Dugard, who was kidnapped when she was 11 years old, was reunited with her family in August 2009.

Amazon wins "one-click" purchasing patent appeal (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Online retail giant Amazon.com Inc won another round in the patent fight over its "one-click" purchasing system as an appeals court ruled on Friday that it did not infringe technology patented by Cordance Corp.

A lower court jury found that Amazon did not infringe two Cordance patents and that a third was invalid. But the judge in that court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, overturned the finding of invalidity.

Both sides appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which ruled that Amazon was innocent of infringement.

The appeals court ruled that Amazon did not infringe two of the Cordance patents and that portions of the third were invalid.

Neither company could immediately be reached for comment.

Amazon also has a patent for its one-click ordering system.

The case is number 2010-1502, -1545 at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The appeal is from the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, No. 06-CV-0491.

Pentagon: Military ready for gay ban repeal Tuesday ... - World news

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The military has begun accepting applications from openly gay recruits but will not act on them until the legal ban on openly gay service is lifted Tuesday, said a Pentagon official.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is expected to discuss the lifting of the ban on gays serving openly in the military at a news conference Tuesday.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said Monday that the military is adequately prepared for the end of the current policy, commonly known as ?don?t ask, don?t tell,? under which gays can serve as long as they don?t openly acknowledge their sexual orientation and commanders are not allowed to ask.

?No one should be left with the impression that we are unprepared. We are prepared for repeal,? Little said.

Last week, the Pentagon said 97% of the military has undergone training in the new law.

The ban will end at one minute after midnight. At that time, revised Defense Department regulations will take effect, to reflect the new law that will allow gays to serve openly.

President Obama signed the law last December, and in July he certified that lifting the ban will not diminish the military?s ability to fight.

Little said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta would discuss the matter at a Pentagon news conference on Tuesday. The Pentagon otherwise was taking a low-key approach to the historic day.

Gay rights groups, however, were preparing a series of celebrations.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network said repeal supporters would hold ?Repeal Day? celebrations across the country Tuesday.

?Through these events taking place in every state across the country we will pay tribute to their service and sacrifice as we look forward to this new era of military service ? an era that honors the contributions of all qualified Americans who have served and wish to serve,? said Aubrey Sarvis, an Army veteran and executive director of the advocacy group.
