Japan likely to nominate ADB's Kuroda as Bank of Japan head: sources

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's prime minister is likely to nominate an advocate of aggressive monetary policy easing - Asian Development Bank President Haruhiko Kuroda - as the next central bank governor to step up his fight to finally rid the country of deflation.

Shinzo Abe won a big election victory in December promising to revive the fortunes of an economy stuck in the doldrums for most of the past two decades. He has repeatedly called for a more aggressive central bank willing to take radical steps.

The yen fell on the nomination news to a 33-month low and yields on five-year government bonds hit a record low as markets moved to factor in bolder monetary policy.

"Kuroda is a fan of a weaker yen and of deflation bashing," said Kit Juckes, a strategist at Societe Generale in London.

Sources said the government is likely to nominate Kuroda and two deputies this week for parliamentary approval. It is also lining up Kikuo Iwata, an academic who advocates unorthodox monetary easing steps, and BOJ Executive Director Hiroshi Nakaso, who now oversees the central bank's international operations, as deputy governors, a source familiar with the process said. Iwata told reporters he had been offered the job and he would accept it.

Like the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan has cut interest rates close to zero. Since then it has adopted unusual measures to inject cash into the economy, currently in its fourth recession since 2000, to try to stimulate growth.

But Kuroda has long criticized the BOJ as too slow to expand stimulus, so he is expected to push for more radical efforts to achieve a 2 percent inflation target set in January.

"Kuroda's nomination won't change the course that has been dictated by Abe in recent months - that is aggressive monetary policy, but perhaps thanks to the inclusion of Iwata the market will expect more eye-catching bold easing measures," said Masamichi Adachi, senior economist at JPMorgan Securities in Tokyo.

The nominations to lead the BOJ must be approved by both houses of parliament, which means Abe will need opposition support because his ruling-bloc lacks a majority in the upper house. The incumbents leave March 19.

The main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) is likely to support Kuroda, although some in the party may oppose the choice of Iwata on grounds that his reflationary views are too extreme, party officials say.

Among other beliefs, Iwata has argued the central bank is mostly to blame for prolonging deflation by not being aggressive enough in easing policy.

If approved, the nominations increase the chances that the BOJ will ease monetary policy on April 3-4, the first rate review under the new leadership, say officials with knowledge of the central bank's thinking.

"Monetary easing is pretty much a given. The question is what specifically the BOJ will do," said one official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

The BOJ has already pledged to pump 101 trillion yen ($1 trillion) into the economy by the end of this year by buying assets and through a lending program and to shift to open-ended purchases from next year.

To underline a more aggressive policy in April, the most likely options include starting the open-ended buying sooner than planned and increasing the amount of monthly asset purchases, the officials said.

Extending government bond purchases to maturities beyond the current three-years or buying more risky assets, such as exchange traded funds, are also options.

A drastic overhaul in the way the BOJ buys assets could take some time to materialize, while foreign bond purchases is also unlikely as Kuroda has ruled it out as an option, they say.

YEN SLIDE

Kuroda, 68, has been considered a strong candidate to replace current BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa because of his extensive experience in international policy and his calls for more aggressive monetary easing that matched the views of Abe.

As Japan's top financial diplomat from 1999 to 2003, he aggressively intervened in the exchange-rate market to weaken the yen to support the country's export-reliant economy, a sign he will be keen to keep any sharp yen rises in check.

He has called for the BOJ to achieve its 2 percent inflation target in two years by pumping money into the economy through unorthodox steps, such as expanding government bond purchases and buying shares. Inflation in Japan has rarely reached 2 percent since the early 1990s.

There are several hundred trillion yen worth of domestic financial assets that the BOJ could buy to expand its quantitative easing, he said on February 11.

The yen has weakened nearly 20 percent against the dollar since November, when Abe began calling for bolder monetary easing.

The cheaper yen has helped improve profits at Japanese exporters, notably carmakers like Mazda Motor Corp, which raised its operating profit outlook for the year ending in March by 80 percent.

But it has also sparked international concern the fall could prompt competitive currency devaluations as many countries are struggling for growth and to reduce debt following the global financial crisis.

Shirakawa's last rate review will be on March 6-7. The BOJ meets twice in April, once on April 3-4 and then on April 26.

Abe has stressed the need for the new governor to have international contacts, suggesting he prefers someone with experience in financial diplomacy, like Kuroda who, as president of the 67-member ADB rubs shoulders with policymakers around the world.

In nominating a BOJ governor, the premier usually respects the views of the finance minister and the ministry's bureaucrats because they work closely with the central bank on economic policy.

The finance ministry lobbied for former financial bureaucrat Toshiro Muto, but was likely turned down by Abe and his aides who saw him as lacking international contacts and less willing to experiment with untried monetary easing steps.

FBI Employees Can't Stop Sexting On Their Government-Issued Phones

Fidelity, bravery, integrity. This is the motto of the FBI, and this is the motto of the group of men and women who can't stop using their government-issued phones to send their coworkers dirty dick pics. And while it's probably never a good idea to sext your coworkers, when you work for what is essentially a group of highly trained, professional stalkers, you'd think one would try to exercise a little restraint or, at the very least, use a phone that isn't owned by Big Brother. Check Out This Valuable Information About Home Improvement ...

Home improvement is a highly important and personal topic to every home owner. Although you may be frustrated by the results you have had in the past, this article is meant to guide you through the home improvement process with helpful tips and advice.

If you are considering working on renovating your basement, do the calculations before you begin the work. Any remodeling should pay for itself in two years. It is not wise to exceed those figures!

Start composting to lower your amount of garbage. Simply designate an area of your yard for a compost pile. Then build the pile by placing fruit peels, eggshells, coffee grounds and vegetables in it. This will reduce how much garbage you put out, which is especially helpful if your waste management company charges based on amount or weight of garbage.

Does your flooring look dingy or worn? You can lay down some sticky wood flooring after pulling up the old floor. While a lot of people think that this kind of floor is cheap, it really looks great. It's simple to install, too.

Think about the climate where you live before making home improvements. Do you really want a deck if the wind frequently blows strongly where you live? If you don't take the weather into account when making your improvement, you may be stuck with an improvement that is useless.

If you are renovating tile floors, consider radiant heat tiles. Not only do they look great, but they are the best for giving off heat. Radiant heat tiles are easy to install. This is a simple project that is easy to add to the overall project regardless of whether you are doing it yourself or hiring someone else. Either way, you will be thankful that you chose radiant heat tiles on the first cold day of the season.

If you want to update your electrical system, turn to the professionals. Professionals are aware of what is best and how to do it properly. If you want to do your electric work yourself, you may end up damaging more area than you are fixing.

The constant pressure can cause the bristles to bend and crack, which wears them out more quickly. This is why you should hang your broom up to ensure that the bristles will remain straight so that they can work longer. You want to make sure that your mop is hung so that it can be completely dried, keeping mildew at bay.

Older homes might have stained, outdated carpeting that show the signs of the wear and tear they have endured. Wooden floors have a classic feel and last longer than most plush carpets.

If you are considering home improvement projects, focus on items that have exceptionally long lifespans. A brand new chimney will last you around 100 years. A deck in the backyard, however, may last for 15 years or fewer. Any kind of linoleum may endure for 25 years, but a good oak floor may still be looking great after a century. When you are remodeling you need to consider the cost and time it will take.

If you are dedicated to improving your home, you will find that the information above can be a great help. These tips will make your home comes out of its next home improvement project looking its best.

Cabot Oil & Gas Reports 27% Increase in Proved Reserves in 2012

Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (NYSE: COG) today reported year-end 2012 proved reserves of 3.8 trillion cubic feet equivalent (Tcfe), an increase of 27 percent over year-end 2011. This is 100 percent organically generated growth and represents the third consecutive year of reserve growth exceeding 20 percent, after adjusting for the sale of its Rocky Mountain properties in 2011. Total reserve replacement from all sources was 417 percent at a finding cost of $0.87 per thousand cubic feet equivalent (Mcfe). "In spite of a 33 percent decrease in the benchmark natural gas price used in calculating proved reserves in 2012, we grew year-end proved reserves significantly without an increase to our PUD percentage," said Dan O. Dinges, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Our all sources finding cost of $0.87 per Mcfe is our lowest in 15 years and further highlights the capital efficiency of our portfolio."?

Cabot's reserve growth was primarily driven by its drilling programs in the Marcellus Shale, Eagle Ford Shale and Marmaton oil play, which resulted in 926.8 billion cubic feet equivalent (Bcfe) of additions for the year. The Company

2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD, 1-Liter XL1, Audi A3 e-tron: Car News Headlines

The Geneva Motor Show is drawing near, and the cars that will be shown are pouring out. One of the latest is the 2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD, a diesel-engined MkVII Golf that combines surprisingly good gas mileage with loads of torque.

Volkswagen carries the gas mileage goal to an even more extreme point with the XL1, now destined for production. At 261 mpg, the XL1 uses a combination of diesel and hybrid, as well as a highly aerodynamic body and very low weight.

Audi's A3 e-tron splits the difference, scoring about 157 mpg on the European cycle with a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric hybrid drive system.

Unfortunately, it's not yet clear if any of these cars will make it to the U.S.

You'll find all of this and more in today's car news headlines from around the High Gear Media network right here at Motor Authority.

Flickr for iPhone now lets you download photos, mention friends, & upload pics faster

Yahoo has updated its Flickr app for iPhone with several new features to improve the experience, including downloading Flickr photos to your phone, faster picture uploads, and the ability to mention your friends with an ?@? tag.

Flickr has struggled over the years to stay relevant, and the rise of Instagram hurt whatever chance it had of being the dominant mobile photo-sharing app. But Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer clearly likes Flickr and has made sure the app has gotten some attention. On the mobile front, Mayer said she wants to eliminate up to 80 percent of Yahoo?s mobile apps, but Flickr clearly isn?t one of them.

Yahoo added Instagram-like filters to Flickr for iPhone in December and now we?ve got more updates today. This indicates Mayer clearly wants Yahoo to be recognized as a product company again.

The new update includes the following additions:

  • Download photos from Flickr straight to your camera roll.
  • Mention and tag friends in a photo or post by using an @ sign.
  • Photo uploads have been optimized to work faster.
  • Flickr photos are saved immediately to your iPhone camera roll.
  • Higher-resolution photos are displayed in lightbox so you can zoom in more.
  • You can take photos using the iPhone?s volume up button.

Read the Yahoo?s blog post on the update below:

Take the conversations to another level!

You can now mention your friends right from the app. Start by typing in the @ sign, and then simply select one of your Flickr contacts to mention them in a title, description or comment. We will notify your friends that you mentioned them.

Download your photos!

You can now download your own photos from Flickr to your camera roll. Just tap the share icon on any of your photos and tap ?Save Photo?. A few seconds later the photo will be in your iPhone?s camera roll in the largest available resolution.

Faster than light (nearly)!

Uploads from the Flickr app are much faster. We did some magic to optimize uploads, but also start uploading in the background while you think about the photo?s title or where you want to share it to. You basically get the best of both worlds: High resolution uploads that will make sure that you can enjoy your photos in great quality in the future, plus fast uploads in the background, so that you don?t have to wait.

And there is more: Photos that you take with the Flickr camera are now immediately saved to your camera roll. We also now display an even higher resolution image in the lightbox view, so you can zoom in further and see all of the details. Lastly you can now take photos in a snap by using your iPhone?s volume up button.

Take a look at the new mentions function in the photo below:

Gay Men, Straight Women Bond With Honest Relationship Talk ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor

Gay Men, Straight Women Bond With Honest Relationship TalkA new study explores close relationships between straight women and gay men and finds that the glue that cements these unique relationships is honest, unbiased relationship advice.

The study by University of Texas at Austin researchers, published online in the February issue of Evolutionary Psychology, is the first to provide empirical evidence that the emotional closeness shared by straight women and gay men is rooted in the absence of deceptive mating motivations.

?Friendships between straight women and gay men are free of hidden mating agendas,? said Eric Russell, lead author of the study. ?They may be able to develop a deeper level of honesty because their relationship isn?t complicated by sexual attraction or mating competition.?

As part of the study, Russell and colleagues presented 88 heterosexual women, and 58 homosexual men with the Facebook profile of a person named Jordan.

The profiles were identical, except for Jordan?s gender and sexual orientation. During the time of the study, the respondents believed the researchers were examining how online profiles influence friendships.

Participants were told to imagine they were at a party with Jordan, and he/she gave them romance-related advice. They then assessed the degree to which they would trust this advice.

According to the results, straight women perceived advice offered by a gay man to be more trustworthy than advice offered by a heterosexual man or woman. Similarly, the gay male participants perceived a straight woman?s love advice to be more trustworthy than the same advice offered by a homosexual man or woman.

Investigators theorize that women may have conflicts of interests with other women and straight men.

For example, other women may be seen as potential competitors, and straight men may discourage relationships with other men and steer women toward themselves.

Gay men, however, don?t have these conflicts with straight women, so they may be uniquely positioned to provide mating-relevant advice and support that is not tainted with ulterior motives from sexual rivalry or sexual attraction.

Egypt opposition warns elections may fuel tensions

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian opposition leader is warning the president's call for parliamentary elections in April will only inflame the country's political tensions.

Mohamed ElBaradei, who leads the main opposition National Salvation Front, wrote on his Twitter account Friday that President Mohammed Morsi's "decision to go for parliamentary elections amidst severe societal polarization and eroding state authority is a recipe for disaster."

ElBaradei's group has already warned it would boycott the vote unless there are talks with the president aimed at real reconciliation. It has also said it will boycott if election laws written by the Islamist-led interim parliament favor Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood party.

The Brotherhood has consistently won at the ballot box since Egypt's uprising two years ago while the mostly secular and liberal opposition has trailed significantly behind.

Hughes could be out 2 weeks due to bulging disk

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? New York Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes could be sidelined for two weeks because of a bulging disk that will be treated with anti-inflammatory medication.

"I'm convinced I'll be symptom free in the next four or five days," Hughes said Wednesday. "I felt like I was kind of ahead of the game with my throwing. I threw a bunch of bullpens before I got here, and, thankfully, it's early enough in spring. It's a setback, but I still have a lot of time to get it right."

Hughes said he will be treated with the anti-inflammatory medication for four or five days. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said it could be two weeks before Hughes could resume throwing off a mound.

"Obviously, it's something you wish you weren't dealing with and, hopefully, it's nothing major," Cashman said. "We'll know within the next two weeks. The expectations and the hope from that is that he'll be fine and ready to go. But there's no guarantees until we get through the two weeks' process and see where he's at. We won't be out of the woods until we see all that stuff."

Hughes needed an injection of painkiller in September 2011 to alleviate a seven-year-old back injury that recurred. A test then found inflammation caused by a herniated disk, an injury Hughes sustained in 2004 during his first professional season. When Hughes returned that year after the injection, the Yankees pitched him out of the bullpen.

The right-hander had an MRI on Tuesday, one day after experiencing discomfort in his upper back during a defensive drill. He has not experienced any problems before in this area of the back.

"I was covering first base, and I just felt something grab," Hughes said. "Just one step, one tweak, and that was it. There was nothing leading up to it."

Hughes went 16-13 with 4.23 ERA in 32 starts for the Yankees last season. If things progress well, Hughes would start doing pool work in four or five days, and then possibly throw a couple days after that.

"If I pick up a ball in seven days, I won't be too far behind in my throwing or anything," Hughes said. "It can be recurring if I don't take care of it now. Stay off it, let it heal, don't push it, and it won't be an issue."

Hughes is making $7.15 million this year. He is eligible for free agency after the World Series.

"I am pleased that he feels a lot better than he did a couple days ago, but you still have to worry about it," manager Joe Girardi said.

Notes: Closer Mariano Rivera could throw batting practice for the first time Friday since getting hurt while shagging fly balls during batting practice last season. Baseball's career saves leader had surgery June 12 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. ... LHP CC Sabathia (left elbow bone spur surgery) is scheduled for his third bullpen session Friday. ... Reliever Joba Chamberlain threw 28 pitches in batting practice, with one going above and behind the head of INF Eduardo Nunez. "It was close," Nunez said. "I was so scared." Chamberlain told Nunez that he was sorry. ... SS Derek Jeter (ankle surgery), who took part in pop fly drills, said he hasn't been told when he'll start a running program. The captain took all eights pitches he saw from Chamberalin in BP, and afterward gave his bat to a young fan.

Effects of Divorce on Men - Memoirs of a Single Dad

50 % children of divorced parents have not seen their father in a year

Make no mistake about it, the effects of divorce on men can be just as detrimental as that of women.

Men?s Health and Divorce

Divorced men experience health-related problems and the rate of premature death is significantly higher among men ? attributable in many cases directly to divorce. The most common causes are pneumonia, cardiovascular diseases and hypertension, but the rate of suicide among divorced men is four times higher than in the sample of married men. (Rocky Mountain Family Council, n. d.) Although the health effects are concerning men and women as well, women are more heavily affected. Men have lower levels of depression and have higher levels of engagement in sexual relationships without remarrying. (Montenegro, 2004 ? AARP The Magazine ? Study PDF)

Men?s Finances Go?Up?

Men have a better financial situation after divorce, according to British data, their income increases about almost one-quarter, while women suffer a decline about 30%. (Fisher & Low, 2009 ? University of Cambridge ? Study PDF) Nonetheless, financial gains or lowered losses are not the only measuring stick when it comes to measuring the impact of divorce on men. Other areas of life certainly suffer; even when the financial side remains intact.

Naturally, men are also concern about their children, but they are more concerned about their future relationship with their children as the non-custodial parent most of the time. (Montenegro, 2004) Existing study literature and the experiences of divorced fathers suggest the relationship of absent fathers with their children usually suffers both children AND the father. Perhaps somewhat surprising, though, only 50% of divorced mothers think that a continued relationship with the father is of value to the children. One fifth of the mothers see no value in it at all and actively try to sabotage the father?s relationship with the children.

Strained Relationships Post-Divorce

41Pq MGXSxL popular posts divorce Memoirs of a Psychologist: Effects of Divorce on MenFagan and Churchill also see the weakened parent-child relationship as one of the greatest dangers of divorce. In many situations the father is usually the non-custodial parent which has a diminishing effect on his relationship with his children. Men are far more likely to have their relationships with their children affected than the mother.

Fathers might want to be part of the life of their children, but considering the significantly diminished amount of time they are able to spend with them, it only goes without saying the father sees reduced opportunities to provide emotional support, stand in as a regular role model or just be accessible as a father figure when those roles are needed. One study reported that almost 50 % children of divorced parents have not seen their father in a year. On the other hand, fewer than half of the fathers have seen their children more than a few times a year.

The result? Increases of absenteeism in fathers.

Divorced Fathers ? On the Outside Looking In

The contact between the children and the divorced father declines over time after a divorce, but the level of trust between the non-resident father and his children also decreases. Children usually trust less?in their fathers after divorce and also often lack the emotional support from them, which parallels the parent?s limited ability to provide it. Fathers have less opportunity to influence the behavior and attitudes of their children once the parents dissolve their marriage.

Men are facing an additional challenge of losing social support after divorce and they are also less likely to seek help for their problems. This is mainly due to the different socialization of the genders. Men suffer from the effects of divorce as well, but they are ?taught? to be strong and not to show too much emotion. This makes it a lot harder for men to cope with and elaborate on the feelings associated with divorce.

Are you a father that?s gone through a divorce? How did your divorce impact you and your relationship with your children? What obstacles were you able to overcome and which got the better of you?

Ex-coach on trial for molestation

? WAGONER ? A Haskell man arrested in 2011 after allegedly molesting a 10-year-old girl did nothing inappropriate, his lawyer told jurors Tuesday.

Opening statements were given in the trial for Gene Allen Burkholder, a 39-year-old softball coach who was arrested in 2011 after allegedly molesting one of his players during a slumber party.

District 27 Assistant District Attorney Joy Mohorovicic told jurors that Burkholder preyed on the girl after her friends had gone to sleep during the slumber party. Court documents filed in the Wagoner County Court Clerk?s Office states the girl told investigators the former coach stuck his hands down her pants and inserted his fingers in her while the two were on the couch.

Burkholder is alleged to have molested the girl at some point between March 9 and 11, 2011. He was arrested Aug. 1, 2011.

But Jones told jurors the girl?s story changed in the six months between Burkholder?s arrest and his preliminary hearing. Jones said that during the hearing, the girl testified there was no insertion ? leading prosecutors to amend charges against Burkholder from first-degree rape to lewd molestation.

The girl, Jones said, presented a different version of what happened that night during the preliminary hearing. Her story also differed on who was at the house that night and when it happened.

Jones said Burkholder told parents of players on the team after the allegations surfaced. He was accused in March 2011, but charged and arrested five months later.

?No other parents took their children off the team,? Jones said.

Burkholder would attend games as a parent to watch his daughter play, and met with no resistance from other parents, Jones said.

Mohorovicic though, said the 10-year-old was frightened after the act occurred and had trouble sleeping. She didn?t tell anyone about what happened for almost a week because her mother was fresh out of the hospital and constantly being visited by friends. The girl, Mohorovicic said, had to wait until she could be alone with her mother?s friend before she felt comfortable enough to disclose what happened.

?She spent a couple days with a friend,? Mohorovicic said. ?It was time to go to softball practice, and suddenly, this girl who was so excited about softball didn?t want to go.?

Not long after that, the girl told her mother?s friend her coach had molested her, she said.

Testimony will resume at 9 a.m. today in Wagoner County District Court.

Grooming helps insects keep their senses sharpened

Feb. 4, 2013 ? Like a self-absorbed teenager, insects spend a lot of time grooming. In a study that delves into the mechanisms behind this common function, North Carolina State University researchers show that insect grooming -- specifically, antennal cleaning -- removes both environmental pollutants and chemicals produced by the insects themselves.

The findings, published online this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that grooming helps insects maintain acute olfactory senses that are responsible for a host of functions, including finding food, sensing danger and even locating a suitable mate.

The findings could also explain why certain types of insecticides work more effectively than others.

Insects groom themselves incessantly, so NC State entomologist Coby Schal and post-doctoral researchers Katalin Boroczky and Ayako Wada-Katsumata wanted to explore the functions of this behavior.

They devised a simple set of experiments to figure out what sort of material insects were cleaning off their antennae, where this material was coming from, and the differences between how groomed and ungroomed antennae functioned. Schal likened the straightforwardness of some of the experiments to something you'd see in a well-equipped high-school science lab.

The researchers compared cleaned antennae of American cockroaches with antennae that were experimentally prevented from being cleaned. They found that grooming cleaned microscopic pores on the antennae that serve as conduits through which chemicals travel to reach sensory receptors for olfaction. Cockroaches clean their antennae by using forelegs to place the antennae in their mouths; they then methodically clean every segment of the antenna from base to tip.

The researchers found that both volatile and non-volatile chemicals accumulated on the ungroomed antennae of cockroaches, but most surprising was the accumulation of a great deal of cuticular hydrocarbons -- fatty, candlewax-like substances secreted by the roaches to protect them against water loss.

"It is intuitive that insects remove foreign substances from their antennae, but it's not necessarily intuitive that they groom to remove their 'own' substances," Schal says.

The researchers also tested groomed and ungroomed cockroach antennae to gauge how well roaches picked up the scent of a known sex pheromone compound, as well as other odorants. Clean antennae responded to these signals much more readily than ungroomed antennae.

The researchers then put carpenter ants, houseflies and German cockroaches to many of the same tests. Although they groom a bit differently than cockroaches -- flies and ants seem to rub their legs over their antennae to remove particulates, with ants then ingesting the material off their legs -- the tests showed that these insects also accumulated more cuticular hydrocarbons when antennae went ungroomed.

"The evidence is strong: Grooming is necessary to keep these foreign and native substances at a particular level," Schal says. "Leaving antennae dirty essentially blinds insects to their environment."

Schal adds that there could be pest-control implications to the findings. An insecticide mist or dust that settles on a cockroach's antennae, for instance, should be ingested by the roach rather quickly due to constant grooming. That method of insecticide delivery could be more effective than relying on residual insecticides to penetrate the thick cuticle, for instance.

Finally, Schal says the study can also be used as a caution to other researchers who use insects in experiments. Gluing shut an insect's mouth to prevent it from feeding, for example, also prevents the insect from grooming its antennae. Experimental results could be skewed as a result of this sensory deprivation, Schal suggests.

Dale Batchelor, a researcher in NC State's Analytical Instrumentation Facility, co-authored the paper, as did Marianna Zhukovskaya at the Russian Academy of Sciences. The research was supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Science Foundation and the Blanton J. Whitmire Endowment at NC State.

Spanish PM faces calls to resign; scandal to destabilize Europe?s calm waters?

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy continues to face growing criticism after the scandal which hit his party earlier last week, in which allegations were made about illegal payments received by himself and what appear to be a very large list of members from the party he presides. As it is logical on the political circus, it only took a few days until the main Socialist opposition party asked the Prime Minister to step down. As Bloomberg reports, citing opposition leader Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba during a press conference on Sunday, only a day after Rajoy also made a public appearance to remain still on denial: Rubalcaba: ?Rajoy should resign to make way for another prime minister who can re-establish the strength, credibility and stability that Spain needs,? ?Spain needs a strong, credible, and trustworthy government.?

The data unveiled by the top selling Spanish newspaper El Pais over alleged illegal donations to key political figures such as Rajoy has sparkled a very tense environment. The numbers published by El Pais show payments over an 11-year period to Mariano Rajoy worth around 25,000 euros each year from a private fund set up by Barcenas, former PP Treasure and main person accused in the scandal. From Bloomberg: ?In a recession of this magnitude, the worst thing that can happen to the Spanish economy is a political scandal,? said Jose Carlos Diez, chief economist at Intermoney SA in Madrid. ?This is a theme that is going to be in the spotlight for a while and could undermine investor confidence if not addressed quickly.?-FXstreet.com

Wal-Mart ? or "The Wal-Mart of the Web"? - Sizemore Insights

Though it has been derisively been called ?the river of no returns,? Amazon.com (Nasdaq:$AMZN) can call ?scoreboard? on its critics.? Amazon is the last man standing of the generation of companies that rose to prominence during the 1990s tech boom.

Sure, plenty of the dot-com darlings are still alive and well and generating more revenue than at any time in their histories.? Microsoft (Nasdaq:$MSFT) and Cisco (Nasdaq:$CSCO) quickly come to mind.? But most have had reputational hiccups in the 13 years that have passed since the Nasdaq?s peak, and Amazon is the only one to see its stock surpass its old 2000 highs.

Note: Apple (Nasdaq:$AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq:$GOOG) don?t count; Apple was an also-ran in the 1990s that reinvented itself in the mid-2000s and Google was not publically traded at the time.? ?

AMZN

Thirteen years after dot com went dot bomb, Qualcom(Nasdaq:$QCOM) is close to break even.? But Microsoft, Cisco and Intel (Nasdaq:$INTC) all trade for less than half their old highs and all trade at very modest multiples of earning?9-13 times expected earnings for the coming year.

Yet Amazon is up 300% and trades for a very dot-com-like 72 times expected earnings.? And this for a company with the skimpiest returns of the whole lot.?? Mass-market retailing tends to be a low-margin business, but Amazon?s are razor thin even by retailer standards?as in barely existent at all.? This past quarter Amazon earned 22 cents per share?for a stock worth $265 per share at time of writing.? For the full year 2012, Amazon actually lost money.

What gives?

Investors are willing to give Amazon a free pass on low profitability because the company is growing its top-line sales by more than 20% per year and they see it as being the Wal-Mart (NYSE:$WMT) of the web.? And, so the thinking goes, once the company has achieved its scale objectives, it can stop investing so heavily in new infrastructure.? The savings will flow through to the bottom line, and investors will finally get the rewards they?ve been waiting for.

Maybe.? But let?s see how the ?Wal-Mart of the web? compares to the original Wal-Mart.

Looking at the numbers, it?s hard to make a compelling case for Amazon.? It?s four times as expensive as Wal-Mart measured by price/sales and nearly six times as expensive based on forward price/earnings.? And again, this is Wal-Mart?the largest and most successful retailer in the world.

?To be fair, Amazon has certain assets that Wal-Mart does not have and likely never will.? Wal-Mart has nothing that can compare with the Kindle, for example.

Sure, Wal-Mart sells e-readers, and until recently the behemoth of Bentonville sold Amazon?s Kindle.? But that?s not the point.? As an inventory item in its own right, the Kindle isn?t worth much.? Amazon is willing to virtually give it because it knows the real goldmine is in selling the e-books.? The Kindle itself is little more than a facilitator, and Wal-Mart has no answer to Amazon?s e-book downloading service?which grew by 70% last year.

In the same light, Wal-Mart likewise has nothing to rival Apple?s iTunes; it discontinued its music downloading service in 2011.

Still, Wal-Mart has gone head-to-head with Apple, Amazon, and Netflix (Nasdaq:$NFLX) with its Vudu high-definition video streaming service, which has one of the largest movie and TV catalogues available.

Wal-Mart may or may not beat Amazon in the video streaming contest.? But if I were an Amazon shareholder, I would have much bigger concerns?such as Wal-Mart?s expanded presence online at walmart.com, Wal-Mart?s enormous logistical infrastructure and its ability to offer free shipping to any of its stores, and?perhaps scariest of all?the move by states to tax internet commerce.

Remember, in high-sales-tax states like California and Texas, online retailers had an enormous advantage over their brick-and-mortar rivals.? Their prices were 8% lower from the get go due to the lack of sales tax levied.? Alas, those days are over.? States have become more stringent in their definitions of what qualifies as having a physical presence on their turf.? Amazon now collects sales taxes in 8 states, and the rest will not be far behind.

None of this takes away from what Amazon has accomplished.? It is a wonderful company and a pioneer in internet commerce.? It?s a disruptor that almost singlehandedly put Borders Books out of business and remade the publishing industry in its own image.? I love the company and admire its founder, Jeff Bezos.

But I hate the stock.

At current prices, it is a terrible investment.? To pay 70 times earnings for a $129 billion company is ludicrous, and investors who buy at these levels are no less likely to get hammered than the investors in other great bubble stocks.

My recommendation?? Buy Wal-Mart.? And if you want to make a pair trade out of it, short Amazon.

Battle-scarred skull of suspected King Richard III revealed

A battle-scarred skull discovered beneath a parking lot in England could be that of King Richard III, who died in battle in 1485.

The University of Leicester released the skull image ? the first photo of the human remains that may belong to the English monarch ? ahead of a big announcement on the identity of the bones, scheduled for Monday (Feb. 4) morning.

"The skull was in good condition, although fragile, and was able to give us detailed information about this individual," Jo Appleby, an archaeologist at the University of Leicester, said in a statement.

Archaeologists had unearthed the skeleton, including its skull, last year in the choir of what was the medieval church Grefriars, which had been buried under a parking lot. Historical records suggested King Richard III was buried there after he died at the Battle of Bosworth Field, during the War of the Roses, an English civil war.

To get as close a look as possible at the skull, and find out whether it once held the English crown, researchers used computed tomography (CT) scanning.

"In order to determine whether this individual is Richard III we have built up a biological profile of its characteristics. We have also carefully examined the skeleton for traces of a violent death," Appleby said. [See Images of the Skull & Search for Richard III's Grave]

Skeletal signs

Appleby and colleagues had good reasons to think the remains came from the famous king, best known through William Shakespeare's fictional account of him in "Richard III." For instance, not only was the skeleton male, it was found in the church choir area where historical records would suggest Richard III was buried. The skull also showed signs of being wounded, as if it were cut clean off his body with an axe or sword, something consistent with a battle death.

Scientists also found a barbed arrowhead in the skeleton's spine, which showed signs of scoliosis. Such an abnormally curved spine would've made its owner's right shoulder sit higher than the left, matching contemporary portrayals of Richard III. However, unlike some later accounts, the king was not a hunchback.

The CT scans will allow scientists to create a 3-D image of the body, over which they can place flesh; same goes for the skull, which the team plans to reconstruct to show what the man's face would've looked like, though this procedure can be somewhat unreliable. The team also said they would analyze any DNA recovered from the bones. Such results could then be compared to those of a direct descendant of Richard's sister, who was uncovered by John Ashdown-Hill, author of "The Last Days of Richard III." From those remains, scientists have mitochondrial DNA, or the DNA inside the cell's energy-making structures, which gets passed down only by mothers.

Strange tales

Richard III ruled from 1483 to 1485, becoming the last English king to die in battle. Though it was known the king was buried at the Franciscan Friary (known as Greyfriars) in Leicester, the grave and church itself were eventually lost. Even so, interest in the king led to some far-fetched grave tales about the grave's whereabouts, including one purporting the bones were thrown into the Soar River. "Other fables, equally discredited, claimed that his coffin was used as a horse-trough," Philippa Langley, a Richard III Society member, said in a statement.

The researchers started digging beneath the Leicester City Council parking lot on Aug. 25. Since then, they have found the church and a 17th-century garden marked by paving stones. Records suggest mayor of Leicester Robert Herrick built a mansion and garden on the medieval church site years after the king's death, reportedly placing in the garden a stone pillar inscribed with, "Here lies the body of Richard III sometime King of England." [10 Weirdest Ways We Deal With the Dead]

If the bones turn out to belong to King Richard III, where will they be re-interred? The University of Leicester has jurisdiction over the remains, and had said last year the remains would be buried under Leicester Cathedral.

However, other interested parties have their own opinions: The Richard III Foundation and the Society of Friends of Richard III, based in York, England, argue the remains should be reburied in York, since the king was fond of that city. The Richard III Society has remained officially neutral. Meanwhile, some online petitions have argued the reburial should take place at Westminster Abbey or Windsor Castle.

"If the identity of the remains is confirmed, Leicester Cathedral will continue to work with the Royal Household, and with the Richard III Society, to ensure that his remains are treated with dignity and respect and are reburied with the appropriate rites and ceremonies of the church," the Very Reverend Vivienne Faull, the Dean of Leicester, said in a statement.

Lil Wayne has yet to watch Nicki Minaj on 'Idol'

METARIE, La. (AP) ? "American Idol" picked Nicki Minaj as a judge to draw in viewers, but she's actually discouraged at least one person from watching it ? her mentor, Lil Wayne.

The rap star admitted Friday that he has yet to see "Idol" this season ? or any other season.

"Actually, I've never watched it," he said, a bit sheepishly.

Part of the reason he hasn't tuned in to see Minaj is because she didn't exactly sell the show to Lil Wayne.

"When I talk to her she's always tells me, 'You don't wanna watch that, you're not going to be into it,'" he said.

"She knows me. ... It's kind of like a catfight where they be going back and forth type of thing, I'm not into all that," he said of the judging panel, which includes Mariah Carey, with whom Minaj had a much-publicized argument.

"The talent on that is pretty good I heard, though," he said.

Lil Wayne spoke Friday after signing autographs for more than 100 fans who were at a suburban New Orleans Macy's to support his Trukfit clothing line; a couple hundred more waited outside for a glimpse of the star.

Wayne said he's hoping to soon make Trukfit for women and children. Now, it's just a men's line. Part of the problem is finding the right designer.

"They send everything, every design to me, and I approve or decline, and the designer is extremely OK (with that). ... That person may have designed something, and I may say I hate it. I get no flack about it, and women are different," he said, laughing. "So we're trying to find the perfect female designer who has no problem with me declining what I don't like."

Lil Wayne, of course, still has his day job: His new album, "I Am Not A Human Being II," is due out March 26. When asked what fans could expect, he said, laughing: "Never have expectations for me, like never, because I probably will not meet your expectations. ... Just enjoy what you get, hopefully."

Conflicting accounts by Egypt man dragged naked

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian man who was beaten and dragged naked by riot police during a violent protest has admitted that security forces harmed him, after earlier saying that protesters had undressed him.

The beating was caught on camera by The Associated Press, and the video was broadcast live on Egyptian television late Friday as protests raged in the streets outside the presidential palace.

A new video emerged online Sunday of Hamda Saber in a hospital bed telling activists that police apologized for any wrongdoing. A male and female are heard urging him to speak honestly and not to accept any payments for absolving police in any abuse.

Saber was receiving treatment at a police hospital when he told prosecutors that protesters undressed him during clashes and denied police assaulted him.
