Health reform remains a mystery ? Bankrate, Inc.

Here's a fun exercise: Stop any average Jane or Joe on the street and ask them to list three salient features of health care reform. Then stand back and count the duhs.

What's the biggest obstacle now facing President Barack Obama's historic overhaul of American health insurance, what with early enrollment in the law's new state health exchanges just six months away?

Most people still don't get it?-- including those who will be able to afford health insurance for the first time because of it.

Survey finds a lack of understanding

A poll released last week by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that more than two-thirds (67 percent) of uninsured Americans age 65 and under, and 57 percent of the overall population, say they do not understand how the?Affordable Care Act will affect their lives. Among those from households with annual incomes of less than $40,000?who thus?would be most likely to?use the exchanges, 68 percent felt they had insufficient information to understand the impact health reform will have on their family.

In fact, what little clear sky the public was able to glimpse during the three-year political thunderstorm over health insurance reform seems to have?clouded over?with time. Today, 57 percent incorrectly believe the federal government will negotiate prices with doctors, half believe the law will help illegal immigrants buy health insurance, and 40 percent -- including 35 percent of seniors -- still expect "death panels" to spring forth?to make life-or-death decisions for Medicare beneficiaries.

Most have doubts

No wonder a majority of those polled were less than certain that health care reform would control costs, improve the quality of care and protect consumers. After all, if change is usually scary, change we don't understand is even more so.

Having written about most parts of the health reform law during the past three years, I'll be the first to admit it's a bear: incredibly complex, cleverly interwoven and, in my opinion, frequently brilliant. What's more, because most of its impact so far has been confined to hospitals, doctor's offices and insurance boardrooms, the public at large hasn't really had a chance to kick the tires.

But with tire-kicking time fast approaching as the state exchanges open this fall, it's clear from these poll numbers that federal and state health officials, and those of us who write about them, have plenty of work ahead to introduce Americans to their new, supposedly improved health care system.

Success Is a Squiggly Line

Success Is a Squiggly LineEven though we often know better, we tend to look at success as a straight line going from a low point A to a much higher point B. As comedian Dimitri Martin points out in the sketch above (from his book), success is much more of a squiggly line than a straight one.

We like the straight line because it's clean and simple. It makes success seem possible and clean, but reality doesn't share that depiction more often than not. The squiggly line may be a mess, and hard to understand, but it accounts for failure, missteps, bad luck, and all the things that might discourage you along the way. So however you define success, expect a messy?but ultimately great?path.

Eva Mendes Needs To Stare At Ryan Gosling's Face More

Let's be honest: We make a point of looking at Ryan Gosling as much as possible. Whether he's on the red carpet, the big screen or sitting right in front of us, it's easy to get lost staring at his handsome face. That's why we've noticed that Gosling's character in The Place Beyond The Pines has a dagger tattoo dripping a drop of blood right below his left eye.

Password Genie 4.0

Installing antivirus and firewall utilities will keep your PC safe, but installing a password manager may be even more important. Without the aid of a password manager, you'll probably use the same weak passwords over and over, simply because you can remember them. That can put your email account, your social media account, or even your bank account at risk. Password Genie 4.0 ($15 per year direct) handles all expected password management tasks; this new version adds the ability to fill personal data in Web forms.

At $15 per year, Password Genie barely costs more than LastPass 2.0 Premium (which runs $12 per year). You can install the product on up to five PCs or Macs and sync your stored data between those. The free Android edition will also sync with your PC-based accounts, as will an iOS edition that's in the works now.

Getting Started
As with LastPass 2.0, Dashlane 1.1, and almost all other password managers, you define a strong master password during the installation process. This password protects all of your other passwords, so it really needs to be something that you can remember but that nobody else would guess.

The master password field turns green when you've achieved a minimal strength level. That's decent, but others offer more help. Dashlane's master password wizard leads you through the process of creating a password that's both strong and memorable, a process similar to PCMag's own recommended technique. Norton Identity Safe displays a sliding scale of password strength, with specific advice on how to reach a higher level.

During installation you can choose to import any passwords you've saved in Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari. (The fact that Password Genie can import these may clue you in to the fact that browser-stored passwords aren't all that secure.) New in this version, you can choose to import those passwords even after the initial installation.

Password Capture
Like LastPass, Password Genie integrates with the browser by installing a single, simple button. The button clearly visible in Firefox; in some versions of Internet Explorer, you may find it pushed out of view until you click the >> button at the far end of the browser toolbar.

When you log in to a secure site, Password Genie offers to save your credentials. Like LastPass, it lets you identify a new or existing folder to categorize the site you're saving. By default, it names the saved site using the URL, but you can change that name to whatever will be most memorable. Password Genie uses a popup dialog box to gather this information; LastPass and Identity Safe have switched to a less obtrusive infobar that slides in from the top of the browser window.

In testing, Password Genie correctly captured almost all of the sites I tried. One oddball site uses two password fields; I couldn't get that one into Password Genie even by editing with the Advanced Form. With its "Save All Entered Data" feature, LastPass is among the few that handle this particular page.

If you log in to a known site using different credentials, Password Genie offers two choices: save a new login or replace the existing one. It detects password change events very nicely, and also detects when you're creating a new account. By default it will pop up with a suggested strong password for that new account. You can also launch its password generator manually.

Build A Space-Saving Roll-Out Pantry that Fits Between the Fridge and the Wall

Build A Space-Saving Roll-Out Pantry that Fits Between the Fridge and the Wall If you have a little space between your fridge and the retaining wall next to it, or any space about six inches wide in your kitchen, this DIY roll-out pantry can hold a ton of canned goods and other non-perishables, roll out when you need it, and slide easily back into place when you're finished.

The project from the folks at Classy Clutter, is designed to hold canned foods, but we imagine you could use it for just about anything, and it doesn't have to live between the fridge and a wall. It's only 6" across, and it rests on 2" casters, so it can slide in and out of place easily. Everything you need to build it are easily available at your local hardware store (The full parts list is at the link below?it's pretty much just wood, casters, dowels, and a knob to pull the pantry in and out with.)

Once you assemble the thing, you have plenty of extra shelf space for storage, and dowels along the bottom part of the shelves to make sure items don't come falling out every time you pull the pantry out from behind the fridge. She even painted it so it would blend in nicely with the rest of the kitchen. Hit the link for more photos, the list of parts, and all the measurements.

Apple and Samsung neck and neck with smartphone, tablet, and laptop sales

Apple nearly tied with Samsung in worldwide mobile device shipments at end of 2012

Apple has nearly closed the distance between itself and Samsung in worldwide sales of smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Apple jumped from holding 15.7 percent of worldwide market share in Q3 2012 to having 20.3 in Q4, just behind Samsung?s 21.2 percent. IDC believes that Apple?s jump is due to the debut of the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini.

In terms of market share, Apple significantly closed the gap with market leader Samsung in the quarter, as the combination of Apple's iPhone 5 and iPad Mini brought Apple up to 20.3% unit shipment share versus 21.2% for Samsung. On a revenue basis for the fourth quarter, Apple continued to dominate with 30.7% share versus 20.4% share for Samsung.

Worldwide shipments of devices like smartphones and tablets passed 1 billion units last year. Additionally, tablet shipments are expected to overtake desktop shipments this year, and laptop shipments next year. The iPad remains extremely popular, and Apple should be able to hold on to its newfound market share, but they will have a fight on their hands as competition with Samsung continues to escalate.

In Russia, teen complains of adoptive US parents

MOSCOW (AP) ? A teenager adopted by an American couple has returned to Russia after five years claiming that his adoptive family treated him badly and that he lived on the streets of Philadelphia and stole just to survive, according to Russian state media reports.

The allegations by Alexander Abnosov, now 18, will likely fuel outrage here over the fate of Russian children adopted by Americans. It's an anger that the Kremlin has carefully stoked to justify its controversial ban on U.S. adoptions.

Russia's Channel 1 and Rossiya television ? which are both state controlled ? reported Tuesday that Abnosov returned from a Philadelphia suburb to the Volga river city of Cheboksary, where his 72-year-old grandmother lives.

Russian media identified the teen as Alexander Abnosov, but also show him displaying a U.S. passport that gives his name as Joshua Alexander Salotti.

Abnosov, who spoke in a soft voice and appeared somewhat restrained, complained to Rossiya that his adoptive mother was "nagging at small things."

"She would make any small problem big," he said on Channel 1. He also told Channel 1 that he fled home because of the conflicts with his adoptive mother, staying on the streets for about three months and stealing.

"I was stealing stuff and sold them to get some food," he said with a shy smile.

According to the daily Komsomolskaya Pravda, Abnosov says that his parents visited him while he stayed in a shelter in Philadelphia, but that they didn't ask him to come home as he'd expected. Channel 1 said his adoptive father gave him $500 to buy a ticket to Russia, though it wasn't clear when he arrived here.

The newspaper said it reached Abnosov's adoptive mother, who denied driving him away. She was quoted as saying he was asked to come home, but said he wanted to return to Russia where he has relatives to care for.

The teen's adoptive parents ? identified in the media reports as Steve and Jackie Salotti ? could not immediately be reached Tuesday. A woman who identified herself as a relative at the couple's home in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, said the parents weren't there and did not want to discuss the case.

Abnosov's story was top news on Russian state television, which tried to cast it as an example of the alleged misfortunes that befall Russian children adopted by U.S. parents.

The Russian government in December banned all American adoptions of Russian children in retaliation for a new U.S. law targeting alleged Russian human-rights violators.

Some 60,000 children have been adopted by Americans in the past two decades, and many Russians disagree with the ban, seeing it as a politically driven move depriving children of a chance to have a family.

To help justify it, the ban has been accompanied by extensive state media coverage of what is described as numerous cases of parental cruelty to adopted Russian children in the United States. The Kremlin also has accused U.S. authorities of turning a blind eye to such cases.

Most recently, Russian officials pointed to the Jan. 21 death of 3-year-old Max Shatto, born Maxim Kuzmin, whose mother found him unresponsive outside their home in Gardendale, Texas.

Russian officials claimed the boy was the victim of "inhuman treatment," and expressed disbelief with an American grand jury decided earlier this month not to charge Max's adoptive parents in his death after a prosecutor concluded his fatal injuries were accidental.

Abnosov's grandmother told Rossiya that she was refused custody of her grandson after his alcoholic father died five years ago.

"I've been asking them to give me the boy," she said, referring to child welfare officials. "But I was very ill then, and they told me I was too old and ill to raise him."

Abnosov indicated he plans to stay in Russia, and state media reported that he is going through the legal process needed to establish at what level he would fit in the Russian education system.

What If The Google Reader Readers Just Don't Come Back?

Screen Shot 2013-03-24 at 6.00.58 PMIf judged by my Twitter stream last week, the shutdown of Google Reader is the biggest story ever in the history of news. Of course, the reality is that Google is likely shutting down the product for a good reason: relatively few people used it, with less using it over time. More wood, fewer arrows, and all that. But that doesn?t mean this move isn?t a mistake for a couple reasons.

Wardrobe Malfunctions: See This Week's Almost-Dangerous Outfits (PHOTOS)

This week, we gave you a handy guide on how to avoid wardrobe malfunctions in your daily lives -- but it looks like those who needed it the most forgot to read it. Vanessa Hudgens continued on her climb toward adulthood in a dress with a perilously high slit, and Diane Kruger showed off her good sideboob.

Which TV actress paired a black bra with a sheer white top? (Honestly, which one hasn't at this point?) All is revealed in the slideshow below!

  • January Jones

We get it, Jones -- you've got great legs.Consider showing 'em off in a mini next time; at least it'll look like you did it on purpose.

  • Diane Kruger

Sideboob to the extreme! We like the lace detailing on Kruger's "Host" premiere dress, but the panel itself looks a little too wide for comfort.

  • Vanessa Hudgens

We're getting major car wash vibes from Hudgens' skirt. A daring slit maximizes mobility -- <em>and</em> potential for malfunction.

  • Brenda Song

Hey, at least Song bothered to put a bra on at all while she went grocery shopping, right?

  • Jasmine Villegas

The teen singer opted for a very youthful frock -- with a <em>very</em> mature neckline. Combining sheer sleeves and bodice with an itsy-bitsy skirt can only end in overexposure.

  • Lily Aldridge

We guess when you're a model, you're allowed to make wild choices. But Aldridge's micro-mini in the middle of a cold front in New York seems a little misguided.

  • Alexandra Daddario

Daddario's dress's keyhole missed the boob window mark. We can't tell if we're disappointed or relieved.

  • 2013 Golden Globes Red Carpet Wardrobe Malfunctions

Diana Madison gets the lowdown on red carpet wardrobe malfunction from the stars at the 2013 Golden Globes red carpet. This hilarious interview features Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, Sofia Vergara and interviews with Nene Leeks, Connie Britton, Thandie Newton, Sienna Miller, Bryan Cranston wearing man spanx and more.

Kerry in Iraq to press on Iran flights to Syria

BAGHDAD (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on an unannounced visit Sunday to Baghdad urged Iraq's leaders to halt Iranian overflights of weapons and fighters heading to Syria and to overcome sectarian differences that still threaten Iraqi stability 10 years after the American-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.

In meetings with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other senior officials Kerry was telling them to stop Iranian aircraft from using Iraqi airspace to fly military personnel and equipment to support the Syrian government as it battles rebels. Iran and Iraq both say the flights are laden with humanitarian supplies, but the U.S. and others believe they are filled with weapons and fighters to help the Assad regime.

In the absence of a complete ban on flights, the U.S. would at least like the planes to land and be inspected in Iraq to ensure that they are carrying humanitarian supplies. Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton secured a pledge from Iraq to inspect the flights last year, but since then only two aircraft have been checked by Iraqi authorities, according to U.S. officials.

The overflights have long been a source of contention between the U.S. and Iraq and Kerry will tell the Iraqis that allowing them to continue will make the situation in Syria worse and ultimately threaten Iraq's stability.

One senior U.S. official said the sheer number of overflights, which occur "close to daily," along with shipments trucked to Syria from Iran through Iraq, was inconsistent with claims they are only carrying humanitarian supplies. The official said it was in Iraq's interest to prevent the situation in Syria from deteriorating further, particularly as there are fears that al-Qaida-linked extremists may gain a foothold in the country as the Assad regime falters.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to publicly preview Kerry's meetings, said there are clear links between al-Qaida linked extremists operating in Syria and militants who are also carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraqi territory with increasing regularity.

A group of fighters in Syria known as Jabhat al-Nusra, a powerful offshoot of al-Qaida in Iraq that the U.S. has designated a terrorist organization, has claimed responsibility for most of the deadliest suicide bombings against regime and military facilities and, as a result, has gained popularity among some rebels.

Kerry will tell al-Maliki, a Shiite with close ties to Iran, that Iraq cannot be part of the political discussion about Syria's future until it clamps down on the Iranian shipments, the senior official said.

As Iraq approaches provincial elections next month, Kerry will also stress the importance of ensuring that all elements of society feel enfranchised, the official said. A recent decision to delay the polls in Anbar and Nineveh provinces is a "serious setback" to Iraq's democratic institutions and should be revisited, the official said.

In addition to al-Maliki, Kerry saw Iraqi parliament speaker parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, a Sunni, whose faction is at odds with Maliki's Shiia. Kerry also plans to speak by phone with Massoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdish Regional Government based in Irbil to encourage the Kurds not go ahead with unilateral actions - especially involving oil, like a pipeline deal with Turkey.

He will stress the "importance of maintaining the unity of Iraq," say that "separate efforts undercut the unity of the country" and that "the Kurdish republic cannot survive financially without the support of Baghdad," the official said.

Kerry's arrival came just three days after the anniversary of the U.S.-led war that began on March 20, 2003, with an airstrike on Dora Farms in southern Baghdad in a failed attempt to kill Hussein.

The invasion and toppling of Hussein sparked years of bloodshed as Sunni and Shiite militants battled U.S. forces and each other, leaving nearly 4,500 U.S. soldiers and more than 100,000 Iraqis dead.

Violence has ebbed sharply since the peak of Sunni-Shiite fighting that pushed the country to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007. But insurgents are still able to stage high-profile attacks, and sectarian and ethnic rivalries remain threats to the country's long-term stability.

Earlier this week, an al-Qaida in Iraq front group claimed responsibility nearly 20 attacks that killed 65 people across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Islamic State of Iraq said it unleashed the car bombs and other explosions to avenge the executions and "massacres" of convicted Sunni inmates held in Iraqi prisons. Its claim came on the 10th anniversary of the start of the war, although it made no reference to the significance of the date.

Kerry arrived in Baghdad from Amman, where he had been accompanying President Barack Obama on his tour of Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan. His visit to Iraq is the first by a U.S. secretary of state since Clinton went in April 2009. During Obama's first term, the Iraq portfolio was largely delegated to Vice President Joe Biden.

Since Clinton's trip, the American diplomatic presence in Iraq has shrunk dramatically, most significantly since U.S. ended military operations in late 2011, according to officials. A year ago, there were 16,000 State Department employees and contractors in the country. As of Kerry's visit, that number had declined to 10,500 and it will drop to 5,100 by the end of 2013, officials said.

Changes scale from 50 to 150 mi/km; Map locates deadly shooting at Marine base in Virginia

(AP) ? A Marine who worked at an officer candidates school fatally shot two of his colleagues before killing himself in a barracks dorm room, officials said.

The Marine's colleagues were a man and a woman. Military officials did not release a motive or the identities of those slain.

Authorities were called at the Marine Corps Base Quantico in northern Virginia around 10:30 p.m. Thursday and found one Marine dead in the Taylor Hall barracks, base commander Col. David W. Maxwell said. A second victim was found elsewhere in the barracks. The body of the gunman was also located in Taylor Hall.

It wasn't immediately clear how much time passed between the killings or how far apart the bodies were found.

Only staff for the school live in Taylor Hall, a red brick building on the base that can house about 110 Marines. The officer candidates live elsewhere.

The base was put on lockdown after the first shooting and Marines and their families were told to stay inside over a loudspeaker known as the Giant Voice. The lockdown was lifted early Friday.

Officials said all three Marines were staff members at the school, but their jobs were not released. Base spokesman Lt. Agustin Solivan said everyone else was safe, including the officer candidates.

The shooting is the second tragedy the Marine Corps has faced this week. Seven members of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force were killed Monday when a mortar shell exploded in its firing tube during an exercise at Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada. Eight others were injured.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was saddened to learn of the shooting.

"This tragedy, as well as the tragedy in Nevada earlier this week, took the lives of Marines who volunteered to serve their nation," Little said. "His heart and his prayers are with them and their families."

The sprawling Quantico base, which is 37 miles south of Washington, is also home to the FBI's training academy.

The officer candidates school's 10-week program trains Marines in the classroom and uses endurance hikes and obstacle courses to evaluate leadership potential. Candidates must also demonstrate a grasp of battlefield-tested leadership traits, the Marine Corps website said.

When they graduate, the Marines become second lieutenants.

In 2010, the Quantico base was one of several targets of an ex-Marine reservist who, during five nighttime shootings, fired on military targets including the Pentagon. Yonathan Melaku, on two separate occasions, fired at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico. No one was injured and Melaku was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Primary care physicians missing early signs of serious mental illness

Mar. 21, 2013 ? Primary care providers could help people with warning signs of psychosis get critical early treatment and potentially reduce the current burden on emergency departments and inpatient units, finds a study in the journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. However, these providers may need to be trained to recognize the early symptoms of psychosis.

According to the study authors, these symptoms, which include depressed mood, anxiety, sleep disturbance, social withdrawal, odd behavior, suspiciousness, deterioration in functioning, and irritability, may lead people or their family members to seek help before they reach the level of full psychosis. Furthermore, previous research has shown that delays in treatment for a first episode of psychosis are associated with poor outcomes.

The team from McGill University evaluated administrative data from health and social services providers to identify first-time diagnosis of schizophrenia or spectrum psychosis in people age 14 to 25 in Montreal. They then looked to see whether those people had contact with health services for a mental health reason in the four years before their first diagnosis.

They found that 32 percent of patients had had no mental health care before their initial diagnosis, and nearly 50 percent were first diagnosed with psychosis in an emergency room. Those patients who received primary care were less likely to end up in the emergency room or to be hospitalized, but they also had a longer interval before seeing a psychiatrist.

Although the study was done in Canada, the findings are probably applicable to the United States, said Mia W. Biran, Ph.D., professor emerita of Miami University in Ohio, and a clinical psychologist in private practice. ?This is especially true for people without insurance coverage. There is no doubt that people are falling between the cracks and are not getting attention soon enough,? she said.

Many primary care physicians do not understand that depression and anxiety in a young person may be early symptoms of schizophrenia and psychosis, which usually starts between ages 17 and 25, Biran said. Primary care physicians may prescribe antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs and follow up with the patients a few months later, which leaves the developing schizophrenia unrecognized until a psychotic episode occurs, she said.

?In my experience, these patients are often referred to a psychologist, therapist, or counselor, but that is not enough,? Biran said. A comprehensive mental health clinic that has professionals on staff who can prescribe and monitor medications along with psychologists and others would provide the best treatment for patients with early psychosis, but such clinics may not be easy to find, especially outside of urban areas, she said. Psychiatrists are also starting to refuse to take health insurance, which can leave even those who have it without treatment, she added.

Bollywood actor, Super Fight League co-founder Sanjay Dutt, headed to prison

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, the co-founder of the Super Fight League, the largest active mixed martial arts promotion in India, was ordered Thursday by India's Supreme Courtto serve the remainder of a six-year sentence on gun charges stemming from a 1993 bombing in Mumbai that killed 257 people.

Dutt, 53, was originally convicted in 2007 under India's Terrorism and Disruptive Activities Act of possessing a rifle and a pistol given to him by the men convicted in the 1993 bombing that occurred in the financial district of Mumbai (then known as Bombay). In addition to the 257 people who died in the bombing, more than 700 were injured.

He was released on bail pending an appeal, but the Supreme Court upheld his conviction Thursday.

Dutt is a popular Bollywood actor who founded the Super Fight League last year. The promotion signed a five-year television deal with ESPN Star Sports, but it turns out that Dutt will be in prison for most of the term of that deal. Dutt has already served 18 months, but must serve an additional 4 1/2 years.

Dutt is the co-founder and the chairman of the Super Fight League. According to his biography on the Super Fight League web site, Dutt is India's "real action hero."

Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt needs no introduction, he is the co-founder and partner of Raj Kundra in Super Fight Promotions Pvt. Ltd. He is the face of MMA India and India's real action hero! He has the raw appeal he has that is so essential to being a star, and people can feel his presence even before they've sighted him. He is the real action hero of India! Sanjay Dutt's passion for fitness and fighting sports along with a vision for India's MMA future he has joined forces with Raj to Launch India's first professional Mixed Martial Arts league. Mr. Dutt is also the brand ambassador for the Boxing Federation of India.

The UFC has been attempting to break into India, but CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said Indians were just becoming aware of MMA. Feeder leagues like the Super Fight League would have been important for the UFC's efforts, to help build interest in the sport in the world's second-most populated country.

The Super Fight League has several recognizable fighters, including former UFC fighters Jeff Monson, Trevor Prangley and Neal Grove.

It has a show scheduled for March 29, but it is not clear if that show will go on.

This leaked 5inch ZTE handset could be headed to Sprint's LTE lineup

Much of ZTE's MWC 2013 focus was its desire to go from white label to global brand name. And from the looks of these leaked shots, the Chinese OEM's taking that goal seriously, purportedly prepping a new handset for Sprint. Going by the rumored name "Quantum," the handset falls below flagship status, allegedly running Android Jelly Bean and bearing a Snapdragon S4 processor, 5-inch 720p display, 1GB RAM and a 13-megapixel rear camera housed in an outsized circular module. There's no visible carrier branding anywhere on the device to confirm its possible Sprint LTE destiny -- only a logo in the notification pane and an anonymous tip, as reported to Android Police, pegs it for that. If this leak does indeed pan out, then that's good news for Sprint subs looking for more hardware choice, giant screens and 4G. And if not, well, no one will know the difference. Check out the source for additional shots.

Financial benefits of plant-based, Mediterranean diet

Mar. 20, 2013 ? Researchers from The Miriam Hospital and the Rhode Island Community Food Bank report individuals who participated in a six-week cooking program and followed simple, plant-based recipes decreased their total food spending, purchased healthier food items and improved their food security.

The study, published in the March issue of the Journal of Hunger and Environmental Nutrition, is believed to be the first to show a decrease in food insecurity -- or a lack of access to nutritional foods for at least some days or meals for members of a household -- as the result of an intervention.

Mary Flynn, Ph.D., RD, LDN, the study's lead author and a research dietitian at The Miriam Hospital, designed the study with Andrew Schiff, Ph.D., the chief executive officer of Rhode Island Community Food Bank and the study's co-author. The study is based on Flynn's research of a plant-based diet she developed that emphasizes cooking with olive oil and follows a Mediterranean diet pattern.

"I had a number of people -- mainly women from my breast cancer weight loss study -- say how inexpensive a Mediterranean-style diet was, so I approached the food bank about designing a study using food pantry items for the recipes," says Flynn.

She points out that meat, poultry and seafood are the most expensive items in a food budget, especially the recommended lower-fat versions. Typical households of lower socioeconomic status spend grocery money first on these items, allocating far less to vegetables and fruits. However, by changing the focus to the elimination of foods not needed to improve health -- such as meat, snacks, desserts and carbonated beverages -- a healthy diet can be quite economical, Flynn says.

A total of 83 clients were recruited from emergency food pantries and low-income housing sites for the 34 week study. Sixty-three completed the diet protocol and the six-month follow-up requirement. As part of the study, participants attended six weeks of cooking classes, where instructors prepared quick and easy plant-based recipes that incorporated ingredients like olive oil, whole grain pasta, brown rice and fruits and vegetables. The participants were then followed for six months after the cooking program ended.

Participants were not required to assist in the preparation, but staff discussed the benefits of some of these ingredients and encouraged participants to look for these items in their own food pantry. However, no additional nutrition or food information was provided.

All cooking class participants were provided with a bag of groceries that contained most of the ingredients to make three of the provided recipes for their family members during the six weeks of the cooking classes. Grocery receipts were collected throughout the study and researchers observed significant decreases in purchases of meat, carbonated beverages, desserts and snacks, even though staff never instructed participants not to purchase these items. At the same time, there was an increase in the total number of different vegetables and fruits consumed per month.

"Not only did study participants cut their food spending by more than half, saving nearly $40 per week, we also found that the reliance on a food pantry decreased as well, from 68 percent at the start of the study to 54 percent, demonstrating a clear decline in food insecurity," Flynn says.

Following a plant-based diet also yielded some unexpected health benefits, Flynn adds. Approximately half of all participants lost weight, which was not a study objective, and there was an overall decrease in body mass index, or BMI.

"Our results also suggest that including a few plant-based meals per week is an attainable goal that will not only improve their health and diet, but also lower their food costs," Flynn says.

Flynn is also an associate professor of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Winners of 18 straight, Heat try to stay focused

(AP) ? LeBron James once carried a team to 66 wins. Ray Allen played for a club that won 19 consecutive games. Dwyane Wade led a team that finished with the Eastern Conference's best record.

For each, it's a footnote in seasons where no championship was won.

There's no arguing that the Miami Heat are playing better than any other team in the NBA right now. They've won 18 straight games, are sitting atop the league standings and have a very real chance of wrapping up the No. 1 seed in the East playoffs by the end of the month. While all that sounds good, it's not changing the singular priority of this Heat season.

Championship-or-bust was the thinking Miami carried into this year, and not even the seventh-longest winning streak in NBA history has changed that.

"It's not our goal," James said. "Our goal isn't to win games consecutive. Our goal is to win a championship. Right now, our goal is to get better each and every game, to continue to improve. That was never one of our goals coming into the season, see how many games we'd win in a row. Our goal is to win a championship and not take any shortcuts in that process."

Miami will try for its 19th straight win on Tuesday night, when the Heat play host to the Atlanta Hawks ? a team that's 0-3 against the reigning NBA champions this season. After that, a trip to Philadelphia awaits on Wednesday, to face a 76ers team that has lost 13 straight regular-season meetings against Miami.

Win on Tuesday, and the Heat would match the fifth-longest winning streak in NBA history.

Win Tuesday and Wednesday, and then it becomes truly rarefied air, because Miami would be just the fourth team to ever win 20 straight in the same season.

"You don't want to take a team like this for granted," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We've talked about this with our group for the last few days. It's a special group. It's a special opportunity. Nothing is guaranteed. We're going after something that's an unknowable future. But we have an opportunity, a legitimate opportunity, so we have to make the most of every day we have together."

Ask the Heat, and they'll say they respect the historical aspects of what's going on, but they'll also be quick to point out that the Larry O'Brien Trophy doesn't get awarded after epic winning streaks.

"We know what our prize is," Allen said. "And it's waiting for us."

The streak's latest addition came on Sunday night, when even on a rare subpar scoring night from James, the Heat rolled past Indiana 105-91 in a game where Miami took control with a huge start to the third quarter and was never seriously threatened again.

Sunday's win was significant for many reasons, namely that the Pacers are the closest thing the Heat have to a nemesis these days in the East, that they were 2-0 against Miami this season and that they were the last team to beat the defending champions way back on Feb. 1.

In the five-plus weeks since, all the Heat have done is take what was a close race in the East and make it a total runaway, assume the top spot in the NBA standings and become the first team to clinch a playoff spot ? not that getting one was ever, ever in doubt.

"Right now, honestly, it doesn't really feel like we are on this kind of win streak," Wade said. "We are just coming in and we're just taking care of business. We come in every day when coach calls us in, and we do our work and we come back and we just play. We're not in the locker room saying, 'Aw, we're on this win streak and it's amazing.' To us, we're just playing basketball."

So how, Wade was asked, will the Heat not get bored when the games down the stretch of the regular season inevitably become less-than-significant in terms of the East playoff race?

"Keep showing up at the gym," Wade said. "We're a focused team. We're a veteran team. We have a goal. The biggest thing for us is to come in and continue to go through this process."

The numbers during this 18-game streak are staggering.

James is averaging 27.2 points on 60 percent shooting. Wade is averaging 24.3 points on 55 percent shooting. Chris Bosh is at 16.6 points on 54 percent shooting.

And they haven't been doing it alone, either. Some nights, it's Shane Battier hitting big shots to be the difference-maker. Sometimes, it's Allen, who seems to be hitting his stride again. On Sunday, it was Mario Chalmers, who scored 26 points on only nine shots to help carry the Heat past the Pacers.

James will likely be the NBA's MVP again, but he's hardly had to be the lone star for the Heat.

"I know you can't win an Oscar unless everybody does their job," Wade said.

At some point, the streak will end. It might happen Tuesday. It might happen Wednesday. It might happen next week or next month. Whenever it does, the goal then will be the same goal the Heat have now.

That doesn't mean the Heat aren't enjoying these moments. It simply means they aren't losing sight of the bigger picture.

"I understand the history of the game," James said. "We should be happy and excited about the opportunity right now."

Tears that will bring good to Newtown

A Christian Science perspective.

By Curt Wahlberg / March 11, 2013

I cried quite a bit last December, reading about what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. I cried because of the senseless violence. I cried thinking about all those we lost, and about the families, friends, and neighbors who are most acutely feeling the loss.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But I decided that my tears were going to be tears that would bring some good, tears that signified a deeper hunger and willingness to help bring out the good in all of us. Doesn't it seem natural when facing an evil to commit to more good for everyone and to think of our tears as more than an expression of loss and sorrow but as signifying our greater commitment?

God is behind the good that comes from our tears. God is our infinite divine source. With our tears comes a deeper inhalation of His goodness ? a strengthening of the way in which we identify with righteousness and kindness. We're saying it's right that we all be a part of this together.

A psalm says: "[P]ut thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back" (56:8, 9). The Psalmist considered our tears as not just known to God but related to bringing about the good that floods out the enemies of our lives. Anger, hate, loss, fear, and violence find less of a place in our world as God's divine goodness fills our consciousness.

God is not in any way a cause or source for evils or for pain or sadness. But perhaps He is responsible for tears that bring more goodness, moving us to yearn for more good in our lives and commit to helping it play out. There's a right longing that we can find behind every ounce of sadness. It's a God-inspired hope to see all humanity swept up in the life of God's goodness.

Monitor founder Mary Baker Eddy had a large hope for us all. It took shape in a number of ways, such as this newspaper, which she intended to "bless all mankind." And speaking of her hope, she wrote: "It comes through our tears, as the soft summer rain,/ To beautify, bless, and make joyful again" ("Poems," p. 45). I find that sentiment comforting.

I'm convinced that God has a way for us to find beauty, blessings, and joy replenished. And that replenishment will happen through our hearts and play out in wonderful ways. At my kids' schools, I've appreciated the thoughtfulness that has come out in response to the shooting. For example, staff made themselves available to parents, and they also tried to address the subject in the appropriate way with the students. I loved that our youngest two weren't forced to wrestle with the subject at school. Our eldest though, both at home and at school, was reassured as to how these things are being conscientiously addressed ? and she was encouraged in regard to her own role in helping keep kids safe.

It's all this greater heart that will make a difference. I don't think that actual teardrops are necessary to bring more good. But warm tears of the heart, described in the poem as "soft summer rain," can heal the cold winter feelings from the tragedy, and can make our world better.

Key design elements in a small kitchen - Mother Nature Network

Kitchens used to be stashed in the basement of wealthy homes, seen only by the servants (think "Downton Abbey.") Nowadays, the kitchen is more likely to be the center of family and social life (think "Friends" or any sitcom for that matter) and tiny kitchens are no exception. Stainless steel appliances may be today's status symbols, but focusing on what you need and how you cook ? personalizing a small kitchen ? is the cheaper, smarter way to make your kitchen your kingdom.

?

Do you even need a kitchen??It?s a serious question. If you?re willing to forego a kitchen, you can save space and money on rent. Eating out is much more expensive, but if you don?t cook, you?ll have far less competition apartment-hunting. And you don?t necessarily need a kitchen to cook, as this?Apartment Therapy thread?shows. (Just don?t start a fire, please.)

?

Of course, most of us need a kitchen, but as Megan McArdle points out in?The Atlantic, the average woman spends much less time in the kitchen than she used to (and the average man is still rarely visits). But ?just when our labor in the kitchen has fallen,? she writes, ?we have seen the rise of the gourmet kitchen: the high-end retailers like Williams-Sonoma ... the Sub-Zero refrigerators ... the $10,000 Viking stoves ... the $250 Breville toaster ovens ... the Japanese knives with their own display stands.?

?

So kitchens are cultural.?I?ve noticed that my European friends? homes hardly ever have a microwave, but an electric kettle is essential to them. All the apartments I rented in Ireland came with a mini-fridge, and now my full-sized fridge stays mostly empty because I?m accustomed to shopping for fresh fruit and veggies a few times a week.

?

Find out how you really use your kitchen, like Viennese architect Margarete Sch?tte-Lihotzky did when she created the fitted?Frankfurt kitchen. To come up with a space- and money-efficient post-war kitchen, the architect interviewed housewives, women?s groups and conducted experiments about how women really move in kitchens to come up with her groundbreaking design.

Notice how?you?cook and eat; do you consume more coffee and tea than microwaveable meals or popcorn? Then ditch the microwave, or better yet, replace it?and?your toaster with a small convection oven. If you?re building or remodeling a kitchen, think about a smaller fridge or a stovetop range with two burners (who uses all four at once?) You?re not only getting rid of something you don?t need, you?re also getting something you?ll actually use: more space.

Use clear jars (you can buy Mason jars by the dozen at hardware stores, or clean and reuse jars) to store bulk foods like sugar, flour, lentils, etc. to easily see what you need in a fully-stocked kitchen. You can also use open shelves, bookcases or?whatever you find?to store food, not just expensive, bulky cabinets that need professional installation.

?

Hanging kitchen utensils also saves drawer space and keeps things handy. You can also hang mugs and containers for wooden spoons or cutlery. A hanging dish rack saves a lot of counter space, and some models fold up when you?re not using them.?

?

Magnetic knife holders can also be used to store spices in metal containers; you can buy them pre-made at IKEA or?here are instructions?to make one yourself. This?homemade spice rack?fits an awkward part of the kitchen saving space beautifully by mounting magnetic knife holders on the bottom of cabinets, suspending a rainbow of spices at arm's length from the stove. Personalization beats the floor model every time.?

App turns your music library into social jukebox

Most popular music apps like Spotify come with social features that enable users to share their favorite tunes on Facebook or Twitter. However, the recently released Jukebox Hero app takes this social element to another level ? allowing listeners to virtually interact with their friends? music libraries.

Announced Thursday by App Factory, Jukebox Hero lets users choose to create their own jukebox or join someone else?s as a remote. Creating a jukebox will automatically port all music from your mobile device into the app, and joining as a remote lets users log into another host?s jukebox. As a remote, listeners can browse the music library associated with that jukebox and queue up songs to add to a playlist. The free app uses a GPS to pull up a list of jukeboxes in your area at any given time.

?Virtually every consumer now carries a personal library of thousands of songs which can be accessed at the swipe of a finger,? said Woo Park, president of App Factory. ?Just as the Instagram app enhanced smartphone cameras, we think that Jukebox Hero will improve the way that consumers interact with their own?and each other?s?personal music libraries.?

This is very similar to Turntable.fm, which lets users create or join rooms with other listeners and take turns playing DJ. The free music service started as a Web-only app but has since made its way Android and iOS platforms. Turntable.fm doesn?t port your entire music library like Jukebox Hero, but instead aggregates music streams from around the Web. Users can queue up playlists by typing the name of an artist or song in a search box, and Turntable.fm will pull up any matches it can find.

Jukebox Hero users can choose to make their playlists open to the public or protect them with a unique PIN, which will be required to log in, browse and queue up songs. The app is now available for iOS and Android and debuted in Apple?s App Store in the Top 10 Music Apps category.
