Apple tweaks Purchased tab in iPad App Store, now lets you view purchased apps alphabetically

Apple recently made a small change to the Purchased tab in the App Store on the iPad, allowing users to view their purchased apps not just chronologically, but alphabetically.

Select any given letter from the left-hand side of the Purchased tab to find the results you're looking for. Tap the clock above the letter "A" in order to switch back to a chronological view of all of your apps. Viewing items alphabetically still allows you to see both all of your apps, or just those that are not on your iPad.

The old way was a huge pain, the new way much better. Let's hope this is the kind of thing Apple keeps improving.

UK economy shows signs of recovery ahead of Carney's start

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's service sector picked up in April, adding to signs that the country's economy extended its recovery into the second quarter of the year, official data showed on Friday.

The Office for National Statistics said output rose 0.2 percent compared with March, when it was flat, and was 2.0 percent higher than in April last year.

The services sector makes up more than three quarters of British gross domestic product (GDP), and Friday's data adds to signs of some momentum in the economy which grew by 0.3 percent in the first quarter of the year.

Services output grew 0.5 percent in the three months through March, according to GDP data released on Thursday. The slight acceleration to 0.8 percent in the three months in April adds to modest growth in manufacturing and retail.

Separate data released earlier on Friday showed British consumer morale rose to its highest level in just over two years in June and British house prices rose at their fastest annual pace in nearly three years.

The ONS also said hourly productivity across all sectors of the economy was unchanged in the first quarter, ending a run of six consecutive quarters of declines, as the economy picked up.

In a sign of muted inflation pressures, unit labour costs fell 0.4 percent in the first three months of 2013 and were down 0.5 percent from a year earlier, their first drop since the end of 2010, the statistics agency said.

Bank of England policymakers meet next week for the first time under new governor Mark Carney. Less inflation pressure could eventually help reduce opposition to more bond buying although more than half of the economists in a Reuters poll expected no resumption of asset purchases this year.

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) ? The FBI says a Michigan man who recognized his mom in surveillance photos of a bank robbery called police to turn her in.

MLive.com (http://bit.ly/18gvfgh ) reports the man told police his mother was at his home in Kent County's Byron Township.

Authorities say 53-year-old Dee Ann Sanders of Martin was charged Tuesday with robbing a Bank of America branch on June 18.

Her arraignment is scheduled Thursday in Grand Rapids.

A teller says the robber handed her a note demanding $2,500 for her children and grandchildren. She got $1,092.

Surveillance photos show a woman wearing a bright red T-shirt with a large American flag on the front.

FBI special agent Adam Van Deuren says Sanders confessed.

It's unknown if she has a lawyer yet. She doesn't have a phone listing.

VIENNA (AP) ? ? The U.N. drug control agency on Wednesday sounded the alarm on the spread of designer drugs, which are sold openly and legally and sometimes result in deadly highs, while reporting that global drug use generally remains stable.

Such substances "can be far more dangerous than traditional drugs," the agency said in a statement accompanying its annual report. "Street names, such as 'spice,' 'meow-meow' and 'bath salts' mislead young people into believing that they are indulging in low-risk fun."

A six-page summary of the report by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime warned that "the international drug control system is foundering, for the first time, under the speed and creativity" of their proliferation.

It said countries worldwide reported 251 such substances by mid-2012, compared with 166 at the end of 2009. The problem, said the report, is "hydra-headed" in that as fast as governments ban the drugs, manufacturers produce new variants.

Nearly 5 percent of European Union residents aged between 15 and 24 have already experimented with such drugs, said the report.

In the United States, 158 kinds of synthetic drugs were circulating during 2012, more than twice as many as in the EU, and use was growing in East and Southeast Asia, including China, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Gil Kerlikowske, director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy, said the United States faces "continuing challenges with prescription drug abuse and new synthetic drugs." But he also noted successes, telling participants meeting in Vienna for the report's launch that U.S. cocaine use has decreased by 50 percent since 2006.

In a statement accompanying the organization's 151-page report, UNODC head Yury Fedotov said that while drug use and production overall appears to be stable in recent years, illicit drug consumption still kills around 200,000 people each year.

However, the office lowered its estimate of the number of people injecting drugs and those living with the HIV virus worldwide because of such injections.

It said 14 million people between the ages of 16 and 65 inject drugs and of those, 1.6 million have the virus as a result of such injections ? 12 percent and 46 percent less respectively than last estimated five years ago.

In other findings, the agency reported:

? heroin and opium use remains steady at around 16.4 million people, or 0.4 percent of the world's adult population.

?heroin use appears to be declining in Europe, with users aging and because of more efficient drug seizures.

?cocaine use, although still rare, appears to be growing in China and Hong Kong as shown by seizures of the drug, apparently reflecting the growth of a more affluent society.

?U.S. cocaine use fell by 40 percent between 2006 and 2011, due in part to less production in Colombia, more efficient law enforcement and disruptive turf wars among drug cartels.

?seizures of "amphetamine-type" drugs rose by 66 percent in 2011 compared with the year before, to 123 tons.

?the use of "ecstasy," one such drug, is declining globally but appears to be growing in Europe.

Tennessee man charged with extortion in Romney tax return scheme

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Tennessee man was charged with attempting to extort $1 million during last year's election by threatening to release former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's tax returns that he falsely claimed he had stolen, the Department of Justice said on Wednesday.

Michael Mancil Brown, 34, was indicted on six counts of wire fraud and six counts of extortion in U.S. District Court in Tennessee, the agency said.

Romney's taxes were a hot political issue last year during the presidential campaign because he refused to release several years of his personal tax returns.

Brown was charged with demanding $1 million worth of the digital currency Bitcoin to hand over tax documents that he said he obtained by gaining access to the computers of accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Brown sent a letter to the offices of PricewaterhouseCoopers in August 2012 to demand the money and invited others wanting the tax documents to transfer $1 million to another Bitcoin account, according to the indictment.

The indictment alleges that Brown delivered similar letters to the Democratic and Republican parties.

My Gay Dad Dreamed of This Day

I?m not trying to get her to grow up gay. I?m not hiding my gayness to get her to grow up straight. But she can see that there are many orientations and many ways to be. Hopefully, by the time she grows up we will have a society where those dichotomies of whether you?re gay or straight, a man or a woman aren?t so important. Where people can just be as they feel most natural and comfortable in being.

In 1975, my father concluded an essay on gay fatherhood with these lines. I was 4 years old, and he was raising me alone in San Francisco. He?d described himself as bisexual when he first met my mother in 1968. They married a year later, as self-styled revolutionaries, believing they could redefine family and gender relations. Then in 1973, my mother was killed in a car accident, and the next year my father moved us to San Francisco, where he could live openly as a gay man and raise me as a single father.

It was difficult to be a gay dad in the 1970s, even in San Francisco. The city was full of young men exploring the concept of sexual liberation, but few of these men were raising kids. And the culture at large was hostile to the idea of gays even mixing with children: In 1977, Anita Bryant successfully rolled back gay rights bills in several states with a campaign to ?Save Our Children?; in 1978, California state Sen. John Briggs tried to pass Proposition 6, an initiative that, if passed, would have removed all?gay?and?lesbian?school employees, and their supporters, from their jobs.?I?m told my extended family wanted to take over raising me after my mother died, but my father told them that if they even tried to take me away, they?d never see me again. He lived in fear then. And he even coached me to hide news of his boyfriends whenever I visited my grandparents in the Midwest.

But despite my father?s fears, he carried hope, believing that by the time I reached adulthood, gay men and women wouldn?t have to hide their romantic preferences for equal access to jobs and services, that people could one day ?just be as they feel most natural and comfortable in being.? Now I?m 42, an adult for more than 20 years, and finally a version of that dream has come true. I can?t help but wonder what he would think. He fought his whole life to raise the profile of gay writers and thinkers, marginalized in his time, through his work as an activist and editor. The experience of gay men and women was so beneath the scope of national concern back then that by the time AIDS began to spread across urban centers of the country in the early ?80s, the Reagan administration turned its back. Conservatives such as Jesse Helms, Jerry Falwell, and Pat Buchanan believed that gay men were solely responsible for their illness and not deserving of government help. In 1983, Buchanan famously quipped, ?The poor homosexuals?they have declared war upon nature, and now nature is extracting an awful retribution.?

Gays were so closely aligned with the terrifying disease of AIDS that they were regularly targeted in random acts of violence and vandalism throughout San Francisco in the ?80s. I remember riding the bus home from school and seeing ?Kill Fags!? spray-painted on a billboard. Another day I saw graffiti scrawled on the back of a bus seat: ?Gays?get help NOT AIDS.? I didn?t want my social identity, so tentative and fragile as a teenager, associated with stigma, so I pushed myself deep into the closet. I was scared. By the time the HIV test was introduced in 1985, close to half of the gay men in San Francisco were already infected. My father was one of them, but neither he nor I were talking about it.

In 1991, my father told me he was diagnosed with full-blown AIDS and asked me to graduate college early and move home. I didn?t feel ready. I was 20 years old, finally making good friends and good grades. I?d secured myself a coveted internship at a record label in New York and an apartment share in the East Village. I then worried that taking on the task of caring for my dad indefinitely would swallow up my burgeoning future. But my father had no long-term lover, no close family member who could step forward. That responsibility was mine alone. And, as he later reminded me, he didn?t feel ready to care for me alone after the death of my mother, but he did it. This is how family works.

I spent the last year of my father?s life nursing him in that same Haight-Ashbury apartment where he raised me before finally moving him into hospice. It was a difficult time, but one I feel fortunate to have known. I enjoyed bringing my father special meals he couldn?t get at the hospice?chocolate ice cream cones from a shop around the corner, miso soup and safe sushi (no raw fish) from our favorite Japanese restaurant. We ate these meals in his too-warm room, often sitting together in silence, with only the sound of his supping or the spoon scraping the bottom of our Styrofoam bowls. My father used to tell me he liked visiting with me above anyone else because other people needed to be entertained. ?I don?t always have energy to be cheered up,? he?d explain. I held his hand when he died in December 1992.

There were times in my life when I longed for the ?normal? family that I saw on TV and in the parking lots of my private school. I blamed the awkwardness and loneliness I sometimes felt as a child on my mother?s accident, foolishly believing my father?s overwhelming grief had ?turned? him gay. When I was little, I even told him that he should date women so I could get back that mother who was lost to me. But had my father done this, he?d not have been happy. And his success as a father, I now realize, was due to his ability to be happy, to love openly, and to parent in concert with, instead of in opposition to, his values and ideals.

I see this same spirit in the gay couples who want to start families today. Unlike the majority of gay parents in my father?s generation, who produced children from straight marriages before coming out themselves, gay men and women who want to become parents in 2013 go to tremendous lengths to do so. They foster children, wait years for expensive adoptions, or navigate complicated surrogate relationships in order to know the pleasure of being someone?s mom or dad. I envy their kids. They get to have their gay families, now recognized as legitimate before the law, and keep them, too.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa's president visited a gravely ill Nelson Mandela in the hospital on Wednesday night, and canceled a visit planned for the next day to Mozambique, an indication of heightened concern over the deteriorating health of the man widely considered the father of the country.

President Jacob Zuma found 94-year-old Mandela to still be in critical condition during the 10 p.m. visit and was briefed by doctors "who are still doing everything they can to ensure his well-being," Zuma's office said in a statement.

It said the president decided to cancel a visit to Maputo, the Mozambican capital, on Thursday, where he was to attend a meeting on regional investment.

As worries over Mandela mounted, Mac Maharaj, the presidential spokesman, declined to comment on media reports that the former president and anti-apartheid leader was on life support systems in the Pretoria hospital where he was taken June 8 to be treated for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.

"I cannot comment on the clinical details of these reports because that would breach the confidentiality of the doctor/patient relationship," Maharaj said in an interview with South Africa's Radio 702.

South Africans were torn on Wednesday between the desire not to lose Mandela, who defined the aspirations of so many of his compatriots, and resignation that the beloved former prisoner and president is approaching the end of his life.

The sense of anticipation and foreboding about Mandela's fate has grown since late Sunday, when the South African government declared that the condition of the statesman had deteriorated.

A tide of emotional tributes has built on social media and in hand-written messages and flowers laid outside the hospital and Mandela's home. On Wednesday, about 20 children from a day care center posted a hand-made card outside the hospital and recited a poem.

"Hold on, old man," was one of the lines in the Zulu poem, according to the South African Press Association.

In recent days, international leaders, celebrities, athletes and others have praised Mandela, not just as the man who steered South Africa through its tense transition from white racist rule to democracy two decades ago, but as a universal symbol of sacrifice and reconciliation.

In South Africa's Eastern Cape province, where Mandela grew up, a traditional leader said the time was near for Mandela, who is also known by his clan name, Madiba.

"I am of the view that if Madiba is no longer enjoying life, and is on life support systems, and is not appreciating what is happening around him, I think the good Lord should take the decision to put him out of his suffering," said the tribal chief, Phathekile Holomisa.

"I did speak to two of his family members, and of course, they are in a lot of pain, and wish that a miracle might happen, that he recovers again, and he becomes his old self again," he said. "But at the same time they are aware there is a limit what miracles you can have."

For many South Africans, Mandela's decline is a far more personal matter, echoing the protracted and emotionally draining process of losing one of their own elderly relatives.

One nugget of wisdom about the arc of life and death came from Matthew Rusznyah, a 9-year-old boy who stopped outside Mandela's home in the Johannesburg neighborhood of Houghton to show his appreciation.

"We came because we care about Mandela being sick, and we wish we could put a stop to it, like snap our fingers," he said. "But we can't. It's how life works."

His mother, Lee Rusznyah, said Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison under apartheid before becoming South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994, had made the world a better place.

"All of us will end," Thabo Makgoba, the Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday. "We just want him to be peacefully released, whatever he's feeling at this moment, and to be reunited with his Maker at the perfect time, when God so wills."

The archbishop said: "Ultimately, we are all mortal. At some stage or another, we all have to die, and we have to move on, we have to be recalled by our Maker and Redeemer. We have to create that space for Madiba, to come to terms within himself, with that journey."

On Tuesday, Makgoba visited Mandela and offered a prayer in which he wished for a "peaceful, perfect, end" for the anti-apartheid leader, who was taken to the Pretoria hospital to be treated for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.

In the prayer, he asked for courage to be granted to Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, and others who love him "at this hard time of watching and waiting," and he appealed for divine help for the medical team treating Mandela.

Visitors to the hospital on Wednesday included Mandela's former wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The couple divorced in 1996.

Mandela, whose 95th birthday is on July 18, served a single five-year term as president and afterward focused on charitable causes, but he withdrew from public life years ago and became increasingly frail in recent years. He last made a public appearance in 2010 at the World Cup soccer tournament, which was hosted by South Africa. At that time, he did not speak to the crowd and was bundled against the cold in a stadium full of fans.

On April 29, state television broadcast footage of a visit by Zuma and other leaders of the ruling party, the African National Congress, to Mandela's home. Lebanon clashes present test for weak military

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanon's third-largest city was turned into a battle zone Monday as the military battled heavily armed followers of an extremist Sunni cleric holed up in a mosque in a southern port city.

Residents fled as machine gun fire and grenade explosions shook the coastal area in one of the deadliest rounds of violence, seen is a test of the weak state's ability to contain the furies unleashed by Syria's civil war.

At least 16 soldiers were killed in two days of clashes with armed followers of Ahmad al-Assir, a maverick sheikh whose rapid rise among the ranks of some Sunnis is a symptom of the deep frustration among many who resent the Hezbollah-led Shiite ascendancy to power in Lebanon.

The fierce fight that al-Assir's fighters were putting up showed how aggressive Sunni extremists have grown in Lebanon, building on anger not only at Syria's regime but also its Shiite allies Hezbollah.

"Sidon is a war zone," said Nabil Azzam, a resident who returned to Sidon briefly on Monday to check on his home after having fled a day earlier with his family. "This is the result of all the sectarian rhetoric that has been building as a result of the war in Syria. It was bound to happen," he said by telephone, his speech interrupted by a burst of gunfire.

The fighting in Sidon is the bloodiest involving the army since the military fought a three-month battle in 2007 against the al-Qaida-inspired Fatah Islam group inside the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr el-Bared in northern Lebanon. The Lebanese army crushed the group, but the clashes left over 170 soldiers killed.

The scenes of soldiers aiming at gunmen holed up in residential buildings in Sidon Monday and armored personnel vehicles deployed on the streets of Sidon evoked memories of Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war.

In many ways, the challenges facing the Lebanese military now resemble those that prevailed during that conflict, which eventually splintered the army along sectarian lines.

"It's the memory of this destructive war that remains as a restraining force ? for now," said Fawaz A. Gerges, director of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics.

The civil war in Syria has for the past year been bleeding into Lebanon, following similar sectarian lines of Sunni and Shiite camps. Overstretched and outgunned by militias, the military has struggled to put out fires on multiple fronts in the eastern Bekaa valley and the northern city of Tripoli, as armed factions fought pitched street battles that often lasted several days.

In many cases, soldiers stood by and watched the violence helplessly.

The army, however, moved against al-Assir Monday after his followers opened fire on an army checkpoint unprovked.

Al-Assir, a 45-year-old skinny cleric with a long beard who supports the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels fighting to topple Assad, is an unlikely figure to challenge the army.

Few had heard of him until last year, when he began agitating for Hezbollah to disarm, taking advantage of the deep frustration among Lebanon's Sunnis who resent the Hezbollah-led Shiite ascendance to power in Lebanon, and a political void on the Sunni street following the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, a Sunni leader.

Last year, he set up a protest tent city complete with public lavatories and air conditioned containers , closing a main road in Sidon for a month in a sit-in meant to pressure Hezbollah to disarm.

There, he kept local and international media entertained by pulling stunts such as riding his bicycle and getting his hair cut in public while he openly challenged and taunted Hezbollah like few have dared before, even taking aim at Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, a figure usually considered a red line in Lebanon.

In February, al-Assir caused a stir when he arrived in buses along with hundreds of his bearded supporters to a ski resort in the Christian heartland, where residents set up road blocks in an attempt to keep him out.

He teamed up with Fadel Shaker, a onetime prominent Lebanese singer-turned Salafist, who took to reciting versus of the Quran at al-Assir's protests. Shaker's brother, a close aide to al-Assir, was killed in confrontations with the army Monday, the National News Agency said.

Despite his zany, attention-seeking persona, the rants against Hezbollah by al-Assir, a firebrand preacher, resonated with many Sunnis bitter about the increasingly dominant role of Hezbollah Lebanese politics.

Many in the Western-backed coalition known as March 14, headed by Hariri's son, Saad, quietly gave al-Assir backing as he launched his tirades against Hezbollah, and several Sunni politicians attacked the army, accusing it of bias in favor of Hezbollah.

Last month, after Hezbollah openly joined the fighting in Syria alongside Assad's forces in the border town of Qusair, al-Assir called Sunnis in Lebanon to join the fight in Syria and accused the army of inaction in the face of Hezbollah's growing involvement in Syria.

But al-Assir appears to have overplayed his cards by attacking the army, the only trusted institution in the country, triggering a backlash.

"The bravery of the army facing al-Assir's well-armed supporters has shamed Lebanese politicians," said Hisham Jaber, a retired Lebanese army general who heads a Beirut-based think tank. He said the army appeared determined to remain neutral despite attempts by politicians to splinter it.

The two days of fighting have transformed Sidon, a Mediterranean city some 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Beirut, left 50 wounded on Monday, the National News Agency said. At least two military officers were among those killed. Security officials said more than 20 of al-Assir's supporters were killed in the fighting, but did not provide an exact figure.

Machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenade explosions caused panic among residents, who also reported power and water outages. Snipers took over rooftops, terrorizing civilians, and many residents were asking for evacuation from the heavily populated neighborhood around the Bilal bin Rabbah Mosque where al-Assir preaches, and where the fighting has been concentrated.

The clashes erupted Sunday in the city, which had been largely spared the violence plaguing border area, after troops arrested an al-Assir follower. The army says supporters of the cleric opened fire without provocation on an army checkpoint.

Many people living on upper floors moved downstairs for cover or fled to safer areas. Some were seen carrying children as they fled. Others remained locked in their homes or shops, fearing getting caught in the crossfire. Gray smoke billowed over parts of the city.

The military appealed to the gunmen to hand themselves in, vowing it will "continue to uproot the strife and will not stop its operations until security is totally restored." By evening, the army had entered the mosque complex, though not the mosque itself.

Hezbollah appeared to be staying largely out of the ongoing clashes, though a few of its supporters in the city were briefly drawn into the fight Sunday, firing on al-Assir's supporters. At least one was killed, according to his relatives in the city who spoke anonymously out of concerns for their security.

Last week, al-Assir supporters fought with pro-Hezbollah gunmen, leaving two killed.

Fighting also broke out in parts of Ein el-Hilweh, a teeming Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon, where al-Assir has supporters. Islamist factions inside the camp lobbed mortars at military checkpoints around the camp.

Tension also spread to the north in Tripoli, Lebanon's second largest city. Masked gunmen roamed the city center, firing in the air and forcing shops and businesses to shut down in solidarity with al-Assir. Dozens of gunmen also set fire to tires, blocking roads. The city's main streets were emptying out. There was no unusual military or security deployment.

"The Syrian fire is beginning to devour Lebanon and the longer the conflict goes on, the more danger there is for Lebanon to implode," Gerges said.

Walid al-Moallem, Syria's foreign minister, blamed the violence in Lebanon on the international decision to arm rebels, saying that it will only serve to prolong the fighting in Syria and will impact neighboring Lebanon.

"What is going in Sidon is very dangerous, very dangerous," he told reporters in Damascus. "We warned since the start that the impact of what happens in Syria on neighboring countries will be grave."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The bizarre journey of Edward Snowden is far from over. After spending a night in Moscow's airport, the former National Security Agency contractor ? and admitted leaker of state secrets ? was expected to fly to Cuba and Venezuela en route to possible asylum in Ecuador.

Snowden, also a former CIA technician, fled Hong Kong on Sunday to dodge U.S. efforts to extradite him on espionage charges. Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said his government had received an asylum request, adding Monday that the decision "has to do with freedom of expression and with the security of citizens around the world." The anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks also said it would help Snowden.

Ecuador has rejected the United States' previous efforts at cooperation, and has been helping WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, avoid prosecution by allowing him to stay at its embassy in London.

Snowden gave documents to The Guardian and The Washington Post newspapers disclosing U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of phone records and online data in the name of foreign intelligence, often sweeping up information on American citizens. Officials have the ability to collect phone and Internet information broadly but need a warrant to examine specific cases where they believe terrorism is involved.

Snowden had been in hiding for several weeks in Hong Kong, a former British colony with a high degree of autonomy from mainland China. The United States formally sought Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong to face espionage charges but was rebuffed; Hong Kong officials said the U.S. request did not fully comply with their laws.

The Justice Department rejected that claim, saying its request met all of the requirements of the extradition treaty between the U.S. and Hong Kong. During conversations last week, including a phone call Wednesday between Attorney General Eric Holder and Hong Kong Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen, Hong Kong officials never raised any issues regarding sufficiency of the U.S. request, a Justice representative said.

The United States was in touch through diplomatic and law enforcement channels with countries that Snowden could travel through or to, reminding them that Snowden is wanted on criminal charges and reiterating Washington's position that Snowden should only be permitted to travel back to the U.S., a State Department official said. Snowden's U.S. passport has been revoked.

U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.

An unidentified Aeroflot airline official was cited by Russia's state ITAR-Tass news agency and Interfax as saying Snowden was on the plane that landed Sunday afternoon in Moscow. The Russian report said Snowden intended to fly to Cuba on Monday and then on to Caracas, Venezuela.

The White House was hoping to stop Snowden before he left Moscow.

Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, said, "Given our intensified cooperation after the Boston marathon bombings and our history of working with Russia on law enforcement matters ? including returning numerous high-level criminals back to Russia at the request of the Russian government ? we expect the Russian government to look at all options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the U.S. to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged."

Still, the United States is likely to have problems interrupting Snowden's passage. The United States does not have an extradition treaty with Russia, but does with Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador. Even with an extradition agreement though, any country could give Snowden a political exemption.

The likelihood that any of these countries would stop Snowden from traveling on to Ecuador seemed remote. While diplomatic tensions have thawed in recent years, Cuba and the United States are hardly allies after a half-century of distrust. Another country that could see Snowden pass through, Venezuela, could prove difficult, as well. Former President Hugo Chavez was a sworn enemy of the United States and his successor, Nicolas Maduro, earlier this year called President Barack Obama "grand chief of devils." The two countries do not exchange ambassadors.

Snowden's options aren't numerous, said Assange's lawyer, Michael Ratner.

"You have to have a country that's going to stand up to the United States," Ratner said. "You're not talking about a huge range of countries here."

It also wasn't clear Snowden was finished disclosing highly classified information.

Snowden has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

The series hints that the town could exist Down East; among the people trapped under the dome are an artsy-fartsy interracial lesbian couple from California, who are passing through town on their way to drop off their surly teenage daughter at summer camp. But the series was shot in North Carolina, with the apparent aim of sucking enough charm out of Wilmington to allow it to pass for a generic Everytown, and the series was cast with a cynical eye for demographic balance, such that it never welcomes the viewer to the state of suspended belief.

There?s also a set of unsupervised teenage siblings; when the dome landed, their mother was eating at a chain restaurant in the next town over, and the kids? discussion of that meal occasions a sentence never heretofore uttered in the history of the American language: ?Mom?s having brunch with Uncle Steve at Denny?s.? No one brunches at Denny?s, of course. That would be like domiciling at an EconoLodge.

NASA moon probe celebrates 4th birthday on Supermoon Sunday

A sharp-eyed NASA spacecraft celebrates four years of circling the moon this Sunday (June 23), just in time for the "supermoon."

Since arriving in orbit on June 23, 2009, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has given scientists a much deeper understanding of Earth's nearest neighbor, mission team members said.

"Not only has LRO delivered all the information that is needed for future human and robotic explorers, but it has also revealed that the moon is a more complex and dynamic world than we had ever expected," Rich Vondrak, LRO deputy project scientist at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement. Appropriately enough, LRO marks its fourth anniversary on the same day that the biggest and brightest full moon of 2013 ? the so-called " supermoon " ? lights up Earth's night sky.?

The moon's path around Earth is slightly elliptical; distances between the two bodies vary from 225,622 miles (363,104 kilometers) at the closest lunar approach, known as perigee, to 252,088 miles (405,696 km) at apogee. Supermoons result when the full moon and perigee coincide.?

The $504 million LRO spacecraft is about the size of a Mini Cooper car and sports seven different science instruments. It zips around the moon at an altitude of 31 miles (50 km).

LRO launched on June 18, 2009, along with a piggyback probe called the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite. In October 2009, LRO watched from orbit as LCROSS and the duo's Centaur booster rocket slammed deliberately into a shadowed crater at the moon's south pole, blasting out surprisingly large amounts of water ice.

LRO initally worked as a scout, studying the moon to help NASA plan for future lunar exploration missions. It wrapped up this work in September 2010, then switched over to more of a pure science mode.

The spacecraft has been incredibly prolific, beaming home about 434 terabytes of data thus far. That's more than all other NASA planetary missions combined, space agency officials have said.

LRO's accomplishments are many and varied, reflecting the diversity of its instruments and mission profiles.

At the lunar poles, for example, LRO's Diviner instrument measured the coldest temperatures ever recorded on a solar system body (minus 397 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 238 degrees Celsius). Other LRO gear has helped scientists realize that the polar regions likely harbor immense amounts of water ice.

Further, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera has mapped all of NASA's Apollo landing sites in high resolution and returned images that show the moon is still contracting, researchers said.

Data from the probe's laser altimeter helped mission scientists build the best map of lunar surface altitude variations ever constructed, and LRO's Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation instrument (CRaTER) measured the radiation environment around the moon.

"In its four years in orbit, LRO has revealed a new moon with discoveries that address the moon's history and by extension the Earth's history as well," John Keller, LRO project scientist at NASA Goddard, said in a statement.

"The innovative measurements by LRO have answered many questions asked by planetary scientists, but have also uncovered new questions as well," Keller added. "I'm looking forward to future work on these new questions as LRO continues to study the moon."

To date, LRO has completed nearly 18,000 orbits, traveling about 125 million miles (200 million km) around the moon in the process, researchers said. It's slated to continue operating until October 2014, though a two-year mission extension is a possibility.

Simple Little Home: Living Busy, Living Fully

There is no denying or "prettying up" the fact that I've been busier than I'd like over the past couple months. I've been up to all sorts of projects, some more desired and heartfelt than others, but my days and minutes have certainly been full.

Without as much time to consider life and all it's pleasures, I've found that I've had to be more concious about living in the moment and being grateful for every minute, even if they aren't all filled up in quite the way I'd like.

Through the bustle, our family has found some positively delicious ways to love one another and spend time together as we work through this transition period in our lives. I want to share with you some of our lovely joys of late so that you too can walk this journey of gratitude with me for all the moments that simply are.

Beach time at the ocean...

?THIS perfect sunset...
?Family breakfasts at camp, still in our jammies and huddled near the fire on mornings still crisp...

...and so many more moments to cherish when my camera simply wasn't handy.

I'm feeling so blessed, perhaps more so because our schedules are so demanding right now, that we can still make time to be together and enjoy it with full hearts.

Changes in cell shape may lead to metastasis, not the other way around

June 21, 2013 ? A crucial step toward skin cancer may be changes in the genes that control cell shape, report a team of scientists from The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, the Institute of Cancer Research, London, and Harvard Medical School in an upcoming issue of Nature Cell Biology (now online).

Using automated high content screening and sophisticated computational modeling, the researchers' screening and analysis of tens of millions of genetically manipulated cells helped them identify more than a dozen genes that influence cell shape. Their work could lead to a better understanding of how cells become metastatic and, eventually, pinpoint new gene therapy targets for cancer treatment.

"We found that by altering the way the cells are grown to better mimic conditions in a living organism, gene expression could have a profound impact on cell shape," said Zheng Yin, the paper's lead author and a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Systems Medicine and Bioengineering of The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI). "This matters because many cancer biologists believe metastasis depends in part on the ability of cells to take on different shapes to escape their confines and spread to healthy tissue. We developed a method of identifying and analyzing the shapes of fruit fly cells, then validated and expanded the discoveries in mammal cancer cells.."

The scientists began their study in fruit fly immune cells called hemocytes. Under normal conditions, each hemocyte was found to take on just one of five distinct shapes about 98 percent of the time. In contrast to conventional wisdom, other shapes and "intermediate" forms were rare, suggesting genes that control cell shape behave more like light switches than teakettles coming to a slow boil. Genetic manipulation of these cells in a lab setting supported that view as well.

Next the group examined human and mouse melanoma cells, which also take on a variety of forms. The researchers identified seven genes that cause cells to take on an especially rounded form, or else an elongated form. One of these genes, PTEN, had a particularly strong impact. When turned off, virtually all cells became elongated or large and rounded, two shapes that can help cancerous cells escape confinement, travel blood vessels, and infiltrate healthy tissues. This information about PTEN is new, even though the gene was previously known to scientists as a tumor suppressor.

"By increasing the frequency of rounded and elongated cells this would provide metastatic cells with a survival advantage that is otherwise not gained by adopting only a single shape, or being highly plastic," said TMHRI Department of Systems Medicine and Bioengineering Chair Stephen T.C. Wong, Ph.D., P.E., who with Institute of Cancer Research, London, Fellow Chris Bakal, Ph.D., are the corresponding authors who oversaw the research.

Bakal added, "The cells have to become rounded to travel through the bloodstream or invade soft tissues such as the brain, but they take on an elongated shape to travel through harder tissues like bone. But until now, we knew hardly anything about how the cells assume either of these shapes and how they switch between the two."

Yin said he hopes data from the study will be useful to cell and developmental biologists who are interested in how and why many different kinds of animal cells change their shapes.

"I believe this dataset has great potential," he said. "We still saw three distinct shapes other than rounded and elongated, and a handful of cell populations enriched with intermediate shapes -- a lot of possibilities for hypothesis generation."
