Pollutants could pose health risks for five sea turtle species

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Researchers at the Hollings Marine Laboratory (HML) and four partner organizations have measured for the first time concentrations of 13 perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) in five different endangered species of sea turtles. While PFC toxicology studies have not yet been conducted on turtles, the levels of the compounds seen in all five species approach the amounts known to cause adverse health effects in other animals.

PFCs are human-made compounds that have many uses including stain-resistant coatings, fire-fighting foams and emulsifiers in plastics manufacturing. They have become widespread pollutants, are detectable in human and wildlife samples worldwide, infiltrate food chains, and have been shown in laboratory animals -- rats, mice and fish -- to be toxic to the liver, the thyroid, neurobehavioral function and the immune system. The PFCs most commonly found in the environment are perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

Located in Charleston, S.C., the HML is a collaboration of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina.

"In our experiment, we wanted to accomplish two goals," says NIST research biologist and study lead Jennifer Keller. "We wanted to get the first accurate measurements of the plasma blood concentrations of PFCs in five sea turtle species across different trophic [food chain] levels, and then compare those concentrations to ones known to cause toxic effects in laboratory animals. That way, we could estimate the potential health risks from PFC exposure for all five turtles."

The five sea turtle species studied were the green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead and Kemp's ridley. Their preferred diets range up the food chain from the green's sea grasses and algae to the crabs favored by the Kemp's ridley. The researchers expected that the PFC concentrations would be higher in species that fed farther up the food chain, since their prey's tissues would probably concentrate the pollutants.

This was generally the case. Plant-eating green turtles had the lowest plasma concentrations for the majority of PFCs examined, especially PFOS. As expected, leatherbacks, loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys had progressively higher PFOS concentrations. Surprisingly, however, hawksbills -- who browse low on the food chain, primarily on sponges -- recorded the second-highest average concentration of PFOS and were the only species to have a detectable PFOA level. The researchers surmise that this may relate to the locations where the hawksbills forage, or it may suggest that sponges have unusually high concentrations of PFOS and PFOA.

In the second part of the study, Keller and her colleagues compared the plasma concentrations of PFOS that they found in the five sea turtle species with previously reported concentrations that were shown to have adverse health effects in laboratory animals. The results showed that hawksbills, loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys had PFOS concentrations approaching those linked to liver and neurobehavioral toxicity in other animals; levels in loggerheads and Kemp's ridleys approached those linked to thyroid disruption in other animals; and all five species had levels that approached those linked to suppressed immunity in other animals.

"Better understanding the threat of PFCs, especially PFOS, to sea turtles can help wildlife managers and others develop strategies to deal with potential health problems," Keller says. "Our study provides the first baseline data in this area but more research is needed -- especially for hawksbills after seeing their unexpectedly high PFC exposure."

Researchers from the College of Charleston's Grice Marine Laboratory, NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center also contributed to the study.

8 Ways to Avoid Relationship Disasters on Facebook | 93.1 WZAK

Here?s a stat to dislike: Nearly one-third of divorce filings in 2011 mentioned the word Facebook, according to a survey from Divorce-Online, a British legal service. ?You can?t blame Facebook for divorce, but it will exploit cracks that are already there,? says Charles J. Orlando, relationship expert and author of The Problem with Women? is Men. So does using Facebook doom your marriage? Hardly. Even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg?s status recently went from single to married. Before your marital status takes a turn toward ?It?s complicated,? try these expert strategies to protect your relationship. Photo credit: Thinkstock

1. Go beyond just being friends with your spouse.

Befriending your spouse and sharing your relationship status on Facebook are no-brainers, but go one step further, suggests Julie Spira, author of The Rules of Netiquette: How to Mind Your Manners on the Web . ?Both you and your spouse should be digitally proud of your marriage. So post your anniversary dinner photo together or a picture from a recent vacation,? she says. Orlando agrees, adding that not mentioning your husband is the online equivalent of not wearing your wedding band.

2. Consider sharing passwords.

Elizabeth Hanes of Albuquerque, NM, says she and her husband, Lee, know each other?s logins to everything, but not so they can snoop on each other. ?It shows that neither of us have anything to hide,? she says. It?s also practical. ?Once, a friend posted something inappropriate to Lee?s wall, but he couldn?t access Facebook from work so he asked me to delete the post for him,? she says.

That?s not to say that exchanging passwords is a must. ?Everyone needs personal space, both online and offline,? says Spira. ?While you might share a toothbrush, a little privacy and mystery is good for a marriage.? So even if you know each other?s logins, you should feel like you never have to use it.

3. Don?t be friends with exes.

People rarely have pure intentions when they seek out exes, says Orlando. His simple advice: ?Defriend, disassociate, disengage.? That?s because the protection of the Internet allows for more forward conversation, points out Karen Sherman, PhD, relationship specialist and author of Marriage Magic! Find It, Keep It and Make It Last.

Seeing what an old friend is up to, though, is part of the fun of Facebook, she adds. But-and here?s the important part-only if your partner is okay with it. If you know your spouse would be upset to see an old flame on your friends list, ignoring or rejecting a friend request is the right move. On the flipside, if you?re uncomfortable that your husband is friends with an ex, bring up the subject. ?Let him explain why they?re friends,? recommends Spira. ?Chances are, it?s not a big deal to him to add her to his many friends from the past.?

4. Avoid airing your dirty laundry.

Too many couples overshare their spats on Facebook, says Spira, ?and your friends don?t want to see the drama in your marriage.? Remember, posting about how your hubby annoyed you is like putting it on a neighborhood billboard.

Even when your intentions are innocent, posting about your partner can hurt feelings, as *Barbara of St. Paul, MN, found out. Her husband dropped off their son late to a birthday party. The birthday boy?s mom made a passive aggressive remark on Facebook about people not arriving on time, and Barbara apologized for her husband who slipped up on ?daddy duty.? ?*Steve didn?t like that he was made to look irresponsible when he was late because the place was hard to find,? she explains. ?Now I only post positive stuff about my husband,? she says.

5. Set rules together.

Your page may be your own, but you have to respect your mate, says Dr. Sherman. ?Be aware of one another?s sensitivities,? she advises. For instance, maybe you?re not thrilled that your husband is posting vacation photos of you in your bikini. Or he doesn?t like when you tag him in posts that share a strong political view. Discuss posting no-nos to avoid future conflicts.

Maybe I am naive | Step Talk

I stumbled upon this site the other day when I was looking for advice on step parenting and bedtime. I have spent the better part of three days reading different columns/blogs and I am not sure how I feel about what I have read. Some of it I understand completely and some of it blows me away. I have even talked to the SO about it and have mentioned that some of the things I have seen on here make me so upset.

Let me explain. I am a 34 year old woman who has never been married and I don't particularly care for children. I have known that about myself for most of my life. As you can tell by my name, I have a profession where schooling was a priority for me and by the time I finally acheived that goal, I looked at my life and realized that I didn't want the financial drain or emotional crushing that raising children requires.

I am lucky in a lot of respects. I was raised by both my parents (at different times) and luckily for me, both parents ended marrying people that I love and respect. I learn a lot about step parenting from these people and both my SM and SD are parents to me. I introduce them as such and while I call them by their names, rather than by mom or dad, it's mostly out of respect for their other children. Neither one of them has any doubt as to how much I love and respect them for everything they gave to me and my siblings.

So maybe that gives me a different take on the step parenting thing. I mean, I was no angel to deal with in my teenage years, and luckily neither one of them ever disengaged from me, simply because they saw it as their duty, no matter what, to raise me to be a responsible and respectable adult, and while I am sure I maybe gave them tons of gray hair in the process, both succeeded beautifully.

I have been involved in the juvenile system for years and I have dealt with my fair share of children who have come from broken or entitled homes. I have seen the scourge of drug and alcohol abuse. I have seen what happens when kids grow up learning that lying is an acceptable means by which to obtain whatever you want. I have dealt with children who have no discipline, who only know the word no, who abuse substances and who think rules just do not apply to them. And for many of those kids, I have been the only stabilizing force in their lives. It has never ceased to amaze me that a child with little to no discipline or respect for adults will snap to when I tell them to, and I realized that every kid needs someone to lay down the law and make them understand that rules are there because they are loved and cared for.

I recently started a relationship with someone who has four children. He has sole custody at this point and the mother is a hopeless alcoholic. I find myself hating her at times but I have to try to remember that any time I feel that way, the kids can pick up on it. The kids are all under the age of 10. He has done the best that he can so far and I have stepped in where I can to help pick up the slack. I used to spend my weekends laying by the pool or going to the theater, or having an actual life. Now I spend my weekends doing laundry and changing diapers and listening to whining and crying. And you know what? I couldn't be happier, honestly.

Are they little nightmares at times who try to lie and manipulate, of course they are. Children learn from the template they are given and mimic the actions of the adults they are exposed to. Do they act selfishly and refuse to help out when asked, sure there are times....but the reality is, every day I can see improvement. Every day I see there are changes that weren't there the day before. Most of the time they are subtle and very rarely are they exactly what I want. But when they say good night and they call me mommy because that is what I am to them, the fact that I no longer have time to get my nails or hair done no longer matters. When the baby coos and jumps up and down when she sees me, when she squirms out of her dad's arms to be held by me that is the greatest feeling in the world. When the three year old goes to time out, albeit begrudgingly, after telling me no, I feel a little battle has been won. When the 6 year old asks if she can cuddle with me on the couch, it makes my heart melt. And when the 8 year old shows such strength and maturity, I couldn't be more proud. But then, like I said, maybe I am naive.

Vicious wildfires spread to Colo. tourist centers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Wildfires moved in on some of Colorado's most popular summer tourist destinations over the weekend, destroying nearly two dozen homes near Rocky Mountain National Park and emptying hotels and campgrounds at the base of Pikes Peak.

A wildfire near Colorado Springs erupted Saturday and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles early Sunday, prompting the evacuation of more than 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists. Authorities said Sunday that they were allowing about 5,000 of those residents to return.

On Saturday, a blaze destroyed structures near the mountain community of Estes Park, where many visitors stay while visiting the park. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Sunday that 22 homes and 2 outbuildings had been burned.

The two fires are among eight burning in Colorado a week before the Fourth of July, a key time for family vacations to national parks and other destinations. A statewide ban on open campfires and private fireworks has been in place for more than a week.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice, who recently moved to the area from Rock Falls, Ill. Rice, her husband, four children and dog left a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday.

Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this God-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.

With Colorado midway through its worst wildfire season in a decade, travelers have seen some of their favorite sites closed to the public, obscured by smoke and haze. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders.

Plumes of gray and white smoke poured from the mountains Sunday, obscuring at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful." Winds were pushing smoke away from Colorado Springs, but residents and tourists watched nervously as haze wrapped around the peak.

Families planning whitewater rafting trips or visits to the stunning red-rock formations in Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs were instead spending their vacations passing out bottled water and setting up cots in evacuee centers.

They included Mark Stein of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and two sons, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 200 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

Also Sunday, a brushfire that began near Elbert, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, quickly spread to about 60 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

Half the nation's firefighting fleet is now battling fires in Colorado, said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. He said C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would begin assisting on Monday.

With eight wildfires burning ? including a two week-old fire that has scorched more than 118 square miles and destroyed 248 homes near Fort Collins ? Colorado is having its worst wildfire season in a decade.

Authorities had previously said that 191 homes were burned in that fire, but The Denver Post (http://bit.ly/NqoAkp) reported Sunday that fire officials told residents of the Glacier View subdivision that at least 57 more homes in their neighborhood have been lost.

"People recognize this is going to take a big push" to extinguish, Hickenlooper said Sunday from a Colorado Springs grocery store, where volunteers were passing out burritos, sandwiches and drinks to 350 firefighters working near Pikes Peak.

The wildfire near Rocky Mountain National Park destroyed vacation cabins and closed the most commonly used entrance to the park. Clouds of smoke blew toward the 102-year-old Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining."

Carolyn Baty and her husband, Darrell, vacationing from Fort Worth, Texas, were evacuated from their cabin Saturday afternoon.

"I smelled smoke coming from both directions, and then I heard the knock on the door," Darrell Baty told The Denver Post.

Some evacuees were allowed home Sunday from the fire burning near Fort Collins. That blaze has become among the largest and most expensive in Colorado history.

Elsewhere in the West, firefighters made progress against wildfires in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

? In Utah, a 15-square-mile blaze around Fountain Green in Sanpete County was threatening more than 359 permanent structures and 213 mobile homes and travel trailers in four rural subdivisions, forcing about 1,000 people to flee. BLM says the human-caused fire erupted Saturday afternoon. Officials report progress on a 9-square-mile wildfire around Saratoga Springs, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

? In California, a wildfire about 60 miles north of Los Angeles triggered evacuations of campgrounds around an off-road recreation area on Saturday. Officials said the fire has blackened at least 1,000 acres in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, along the Interstate 5 corridor in Gorman.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained. The 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso began June 4. Meanwhile, the largest wildfire in state history was 87 percent contained, having burned more than 464 square miles after two blazes merged on May 16.

? In Montana, two wildfires were burning in the southwest part of the state, including the fast-moving Antelope Fire, which started Saturday afternoon about 10 miles north of Whitehall and had grown to 462 acres on Sunday. About 100 firefighters were battling that blaze.

? In Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service said Sunday that containment against the Poco Fire, just outside of Young, is up to 50 percent and remains under 12,000 acres. Officials say many of the firefighting resources are being released to their home units or to other fire assignments.

Colts owner Jim Irsay has taken to Twitter to call me out personally for a joke included at the bottom of a Saturday item regarding Irsay?s position that marketing rights aren?t holding up an eventual contract with quarterback Andrew Luck.

Since most of the latest available pictures of Luck show him wearing a mortar board and a gown tied and draped over his shoulders like an Andy Bernard sweater, and given that the topic of the item was Luck?s marketing rights via the poorly-crafted tweets of Jim Irsay, I closed with this:? ?Luck likely will be free to endorse whatever he wants to endorse, including the use of images of his Stanford graduation to be included in a campaign for online courses aimed at teaching rich, middle-aged white guys how to type legibly on Twitter.?

It was a slap at Irsay?s notorious habit of oft-indecipherable Twitter messages, and using the term ?rich, middle-aged white guys? was aimed at describing Irsay?s overall demographic.

Irsay didn?t see it that way.? On Monday morning, Irsay started the debate with this:

Aspiring cake decorators can do as much or as little as they like, Goldman says. After selecting a pre-made cake or cupcakes ? in chocolate, vanilla, marble, carrot, red velvet and a daily special ? customers can cover it in fondant or buttercream or have one of the store's employees do it. Decorations will include everything from sprinkles, sugar flowers and jellybeans to Goldman's signature cake tattoos. Customers will get a tray of paintbrushes, piping tips, fondant tools and other gadgets. At a glass-enclosed airbrush station, customers can learn to graffiti their cakes.

"I want people to not only have fun, but to learn something, to see they can do something amazing and fun and creative and be successful at it," Goldman says. "At the end of their two hours I want them to look at their cake and run up to a random stranger and say `Dude, look what I made!'"

In a twist, Goldman will have some competition from TV's "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro, who is introducing a new line of cakes at bakeries and grocery stores this summer. Unlike Goldman's line, Valastro's cakes will arrive fully decorated, including the "Badda Bloom" ? a two-layer cake, one chocolate and one vanilla, with a layer of fudge and covered in bright green frosting with pink and purple flowers.

Goldman says his plans include roughly two dozen stores nationwide within the first two years, and later, a store in Tokyo.

The first, in Los Angeles, will have 10 tables with 40 seats in the decorating area. Goldman says he expects a large part of the clientele to be children and teenagers as well as bridal showers and bachelorette parties. A small cafe will offer ? what else? ? cake and coffee for parents sitting out the mayhem.

"This is something that's different and fun and cool," Goldman says. "For the cost of movie tickets and popcorn and a soda you can hang out and do a cake with your kids."

Prices will start at $36 for a cake and all the decorating accessories, or $18 for four cupcakes. In addition, Duff's Cakemix will also offer fully decorated cakes for purchase, Goldman says, and to-go kits that contain everything a person needs to decorate at home.

Among Goldman's partners is Los Angeles restaurateur Richard Drapkin. The store will also have a Duff's Cakemix food truck that caters parties.

Goldman is also developing a line of branded products that could include unique cake tattoos, he says.

"Ace of Cakes" airs on the Food Network Wednesdays at 10 and 10:30am EDT.
