Bayer submits 'son of Nexavar' cancer drug for FDA approval

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s experimental cancer drug regorafenib -- viewed as the "son of Nexavar" from Bayer and Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. -- was submitted Thursday for approval to the Food and Drug Administration, the companies said.

Bayer said the new drug application was submitted for regorafenib's treatment of metastatic or unresectable gastrointestinal stromal tumors in patients whose cancer continues despite prior treatments.

Regorafenib was developed by Bayer but was the center of a suit filed in May 2009 by South San Francisco-based Onyx (NASDAQ: ONXX). The suit claimed that Bayer was working behind Onyx's back on regorafenib, or "son of Nexavar."

Bayer and Onyx are partners on the liver and kidney cancer drug Nexavar, known scientifically as sorafenib. Regorafenib's chemical structure is similar to that of Nexavar, save for regorafenib's use of fluorine.

The companies settled the suit in October 2011. Onyx, led by CEO Tony Coles, nabbed $160 million and will receive 20 percent on global sales of regorafenib, while Bayer won the right to sell Nexavar in Japan.

Regorafenib has the potential to treat various types of tumors. In its Phase III study in gastrointestinal stromal tumors, or GIST, the drug was found to stop progression of the cancer, or progression-free survival, for a median of 4.8 months, compared to less than a month for patients who were given a placebo.

The most commonly reported side effects for patients in the trial who were given regorafenib were skin reactions on the hands and feet, hypertension, diarrhea, fatigue and inflammation in the mouth.

The FDA recently allowed Bayer to offer regorafenib as part of an expanded access program, which allows patients to use the drug outside of clinical trials.

Not Sure What Web Hosting Is? Read This! : Internet Business Blog ...

Finding a new web host can be daunting; where do you begin? There are so many factors to consider, such as pricing and what comes with your plan, that becoming confused is easy. This article will guide you through the process to ensure you find the host which fits your needs.

If your website is used for professional purposes, you must be sure to avoid free hosting services at all costs. It may seem tempting if you are on a tight budget, but there are too many downfalls to make it worth your time and effort just to have constant problems with the host.

Shared Hosting

A great host will provide you the opportunity to cancel at any time. Even with a contract, you still should have the option to stop whenever you want and get a pro-rated refund. You want to feel that you have the freedom to leave a hosting service without the penalty of paying for service you will not use.

If you?re just building your first website, opt for shared hosting. There are two main types of hosting on offer: shared, which is cheap, but has fewer options, and dedicated, in which you get the works and lots of customizability, but you pay for the privilege. Good shared hosting plans can be had for just a few dollars a month.

It is important to understand the refund policy of your potential web host prior to making a commitment. A lot of web hosting packages will require you to sign up for a year at a time, or will offer significant discounts for making a long term commitment. You should make certain that you will be able to obtain a refund if the service is less than satisfactory. Certain packages may not allow refunds, or might have cancellation fees.

Keep track of your sales and traffic so you can find out when people are on your site. If you notice a time of the day where you get more visits, you should look carefully as the uptime advertised by your web host. If most of the down time occurs during your rush hour, look for another service.

You need to protect what you invest into your site by buying your domain name outright instead of registering it through your host. Even though this may be convenient for you, it can put your ownership of a domain name in jeopardy if something goes wrong for the host. Keep your domain registered with an independent registrar company to prevent any mishaps.

Before choosing your web hosting service, determine whether or not you will need to use web templates. Many hosts will provide easy to use templates for building your site without the need for HTML knowledge or a professional designer. If you need this service, then choose a host that give a wide range of templates.

Web Hosting Service

Read the terms of your contract before subscribing to a web hosting service. You should look for a guarantee that your content will be updated right away when you upload it to your server. Remember that your visitors want up to date content and you will not be able to meet their expectations with a slow web hosting service.

If a web hosting package says they offer unlimited services, consider their statements carefully. A web hosting provider offering unlimited disk space, for example, could put limitations on the types of files you are allowed to upload and store. Additionally, some plans that include unlimited bandwidth are actually tiered payment plans. Review your contract carefully, consider different kinds of plans and remember that there is, generally, no such thing as unlimited features.

Choose a web host with a good support system. It is inevitable when working with websites that something will eventually go wrong. The difference is made when you have access to a reliable support team. An ideal support team can resolve most problems in 30 minutes, while some of the subpar companies will take up to 24 hours to even respond to a call for help.

If you are working with a limited budget, consider using a shared web hosting service. This option is especially appealing for personal websites or any site that will not be used to store sensitive information. If you take this route, you can expect to pay well under $20 per month?much less than you would pay for service from a dedicated server.

You should look for a web host that offers a good FTP application. An FTP software allows you to upload new content to your site quickly and safely. If you have to go to your host?s site and log in to upload new content, you are losing a lot of time.

Find out whether you need shared hosting or a dedicated plan. Shared hostin provides limited resources and is probably not the right choice, if you experience a high volume of traffic and a fairly complicated site. The bigger your site, or your plans, the more you should consider dedicated hosting.

You might want to consider a web host if he or she provides a web hosting trial. When a host provides this type of trial, this demonstrates that this person is confident enough in his or her hosting capabilities to provide services for free for a limited time. However, you should ensure that you carefully read the trial?s terms. For example, some hosts may try to trick you into purchasing a whole year of hosting simply for a free month of hosting. Do not fall for these scams.

If you are getting started with your website, you should look for a web host that allows you to use 30MB of storage space. This is the average size of a new site, but you should expect it to grow as you add more content overtime, at least up to 100MB.

Web Host

You may not be satisfied with what a free web host has to offer. The price may look great, but the services may not sufficiently meet your needs. If your site is growing, you might be stuck with a web host that can?t grow with you. Switching web hosting providers is not always an easy process, so choosing a free web host could become a pain in the future.

Many people have to find a web host every day, but you were smart enough to seek out the information which can help you get what you?re looking for before signing up with a web host. Good for you! Continue to seek new information until you find the web host which offers you the items you need for the best price

7 Reasons to Choose Your Local Sign or Vehicle Wraps Company ...

At Sunrise Signs our customer area and target market are nationwide and we?re never surprised when our customers tell us they chose us instead of their local sign and vehicle wraps company. Why aren?t we surprised? We?ll give you 7 reasons to go ahead?choose the local guy?

1. You Don?t Care About Coast-to-Coast Recognition

Do a Google search on ?nationwide vehicle wraps? and if your local sign guy isn?t listed in the top five search results, that should be a red flag right there. In our Google search we placed in two of the top five spots including the ads!

Nationwide vehicle graphics Google Search

A national vehicle graphics and wraps company can offer great local service because they are experienced and vested enough to know what they can produce. Your local sign company may fear the coast-to-coast presence simply because they don?t trust their own qualifications, design experience and wraps expertise. If you don?t care how your wraps come out?go for it?choose the nearby sign company.

2. You Like Waiting and Waiting for a Call Back

Even if the local car wraps and sign company has a website, a toll-free telephone number and a website fill-in contact us form?if they don?t call you back or connect with you, how interested are they in obtaining your business?

Our business philosophy?is different. We know how important it is to receive a quick response. If you don?t mind waiting for that call back, go head and give your local sign guy a call?we?re sure they?ll contact you soon?on their terms and when they?re ready!

3. You Enjoy Surprise Changes in Pricing

Many the local sign and vehicle wrap providers will quote you one price just to get the job. Of course they never divulge the extra fees for wrapping the bumper, design fees or change in design fees. They also don?t offer 100 percent satisfaction meaning if there?s something you don?t like about the wrap, they?ll fix it?to them that?s just another fee.

Sunrise Signs quotes you one fee and one fee only. Our fee is all-inclusive from conception to design to creating to printing to installation and customer satisfaction. But of course if you enjoy hidden or non-disclosed fees, call the local guy and enjoy the multiple charges!

4. You Don?t Want to Be Involved in the Wrap Process

Nationwide SUV Wraps AdvertisingIf you are just looking for a vehicle wraps or car wrap advertising and you want it now?pick the local sign business. You don?t need to be involved right? You?ve given them a direction and they should be able to expertly complete the design and wrap based on that direction?but probably not.

Ever hire a contractor to build or install anything? A deck or floor tile? Once you signed the contract and let them have at it, was the job the way you expected? Or, did you find flaws in the deck, uneven grout in the tile or even chipped tiles? What to do? You signed the contract! Who can you blame if the contractor you hired didn?t involve you in the design and installation process?

At Sunrise Signs we look at vehicle wraps as a process that involves the customer from start to finish. Even if you?re unsure of the design, we have in-house graphic designers who ask the right questions and offer real solutions. We never say ?Just sign here and you?ll love the design.? We are solution and customer quality based and we come with a guarantee. Of course if you don?t care how the final wraps really look, you might just call your local sign guy.

5. You Want Flames and Outdated Truck Lettering

Nationwide Truck Wraps AdvertisingSay you choose a local sign company and when you walk in the majority of their portfolio of vehicle wraps and graphics consist of flames and truck lettering?more of the decal look. If this is something you really want, go with this sign guy because you?re guaranteed to get it!

On the other hand if you?re looking for professional wraps, just ask to see our portfolio or take a look at some of our Success Stories. Not only will you be pleasantly surprised, you?ll be anxious to get started. We cater to you and what you want, not finding the easiest solution for a car wrap because that?s all flames and decals really are. A nationwide vehicle wraps company will have a vast portfolio.

6. You Don?t Mind Waiting Three Months for Installation

This is sort of like the no-call-back local sign company. They promise to have your wraps ready and installed in a few weeks but in reality, those weeks turn into months. This is a typical problem with local sign businesses that are a one-man show. It does become impossible for them to offer estimates, create artwork, get approvals, work with the customer, print the vehicle wraps and then install them. A one-shop vehicle wrapping company can?t do it all but if you don?t mind waiting?choose the one-man show but expect continual delays!

Because Sunrise Signs is a nationwide vehicle wraps and graphics company, when we say three to five weeks from design to installation, we mean it! Of course we?ll need your final approval on the artwork before we print the wraps on high-quality, heavy-duty vinyl but once we get that approval you won?t be waiting for months. But, if you like waiting?you already know this by now?choose the local sign business.

7.?You Don?t Need to Use Your Company Vehicles for Weeks at a Time

Find Nationwide van wrapsIf you plan on fleet vehicle wraps or franchise wraps, choose the local guy if you really don?t need those corporate cars?for a long time! Again, the local and non-experienced may be more the ?yes? guy type just to get the deposit and the job. But, you need those fleet vehicles?even if it?s just one company car?on the road doing their job. If it?s a contractor?s van, a landscape company truck or a fleet of courtesy shuttles or a hot on the market new product car, you can?t simply wait and wait can you? If company vehicle downtime isn?t important to you, choose the local guy.

Because Sunrise Signs is a nationwide vehicle graphics company, we are confident the timeline we offer is accurate. Our timeline consists of a deposit placed and within 24 hours you?re contacted for a design consultation. Once the consultation is complete, our customers receive their design within five to seven business days from artwork approval. Our entire process for nationwide customers is only about three weeks and we pride ourselves in our timeline. Then again, if you can afford to go without your corporate vehicle, meet with the local guy.

7 Reasons to Choose the Local Guy

Nationwide Car Wraps AdvertisingWe?re sure by now we?ve offered some great reasons to choose the local guy but then again, we?ve also pointed out why Sunrise Signs should be your first choice for coast-to-coast vehicle graphics and wraps. We?ll let you make the choice but our experience and customer satisfaction speaks for itself! Read some of customer testimonials?and browse our Photo Gallery we know you?ll choose us!

Great Public Speaking: Public Speaker Marketing - Selling With ...

Affiliate programs allow you to make money by recommending other people?s products. You get a commission if someone buys something. These programs also allow you to have an army of commissioned salespeople selling your stuff around the world and you don?t pay them anything unless they sell something.

There are basically two ways to make money with associate / affiliate programs:

1. You put other people's links on your site, or in your ezine. When someone clicks from your site or ezine to the other site and buys something, you get a commission. You can even tell someone about the link, or put the link in printed material. When they visit the link and buy something you still get a commission. It costs nothing to participate in such a program.

2. You purchase tracking software and have other people putting your links on their sites. When someone clicks from their site to yours and purchases something, you owe them a commission, which the software tracks for you. This software goes from free to many thousands of dollars. If you have the http://www.KickStartCart.com integrated shopping cart system, it includes top-notch affiliate software.

The most famous associate program is Amazon.com. You put a link on your site and then you make money when people click through to buy things. If you go looking around websites, you?ll see a lot of people who are selling books for Amazon.com, the big online bookseller, by putting a banner on their website. You could put a banner on your website and if someone bought a book by clicking through that link to Amazon, you?d get a commission on it.

Amazon is getting a whole bunch of people selling books for them. But we don?t recommend using Amazons? or any of the many lesser known programs because they give you such a lousy commission. You?re getting somebody to click out of your site for maybe a buck or a buck and a half and the affiliate won?t even pay you until your commission reaches a certain level. It could be six months later. So hold out for the ones that pay good money.

You can also get your own software that will allow you to recruit associates to sell your products. If anyone wants to put your links on their site, there?s a sophisticated tracking program to monitor when someone clicks through from their site, and to notify you of such an occurrence.

Affiliate Fraud Tip: If you have your own associate program you may want to consider paying your affiliates using the online payment program http://www.PayPal.com.

Jobslover is the Only Real Supply for On-line Paid Surveys | EzinePR

With more than 500 ?paid survey? organizations on the net, it really is clear that this is an enterprise that?s here to keep. A number of the websites offer you an opportunity to ?get rich quick? while other people offer you a possibility to earn a few added dollars within your spare time participating in panels. Are you able to make a living off of these websites You certain can ? but not by taking surveys. There simply is not adequate time in every day to earn a viable living off from the online survey gig.

So how can you make actual money with these websites

It is really simple. You produce a ?survey portal.? While not effortless to set up, after established, it really is a way you are able to earn income and not even have to fill out one survey. The set-up fees are minimal, but some personal computer knowledge is needed.

Most of the on the internet survey businesses offer you a ?referral? fee for directing those who desire to earn funds by taking surveys to their web site. And this can be where the cash is.

The initial issue you?ll want to do is purchase a domain name. You will need to get a single that?s catchy and straightforward to don?t forget as well as spell. After our domain name is secured, you will must setup a site. It does not have to be elaborate at all, but should be appealing for the viewer. And, of course, you?ll must possess a host. Most host organizations charge about $25 a month. You would like to make certain you acquire a host that allows advertisements. Some hosting websites like Yahoo are extremely user friendly, but do not permit marketing.

You are going to must do a bit of analysis into the various survey organizations that offer you a referral fee. You can sign up for each and every internet site and you will receive a ?referral link.? This link will probably be posted in your web site within the type of a ?hyperlink.? You are going to need to get as a lot of referral hyperlinks as it is possible to to post in your internet site. When researching the companies, ensure that referral payments are created in money, not points, and that you could receive them by verify or via Paypal. If you decide to accept these that offer you points, you?ll have to monitor that site to make certain you money within the points for money periodically. Usually do not bother with any website that delivers points in exchange for sweepstakes entries or prizes; you happen to be wasting your time.

Some survey sites supply ?affiliate? applications. This can be exactly where you?ll be able to truly post an marketing banner in your website. It won?t expense you any funds, and every single time a person truly clicks on the banner and signs up for the survey firm, you?ll get paid.

You are going to need to use lots of visual effects inside your internet site giving the impression that anybody can make a living on the web performing surveys. I?ve observed lots of survey portals, several of them have photographs of huge houses, pools, exotic holiday spots and fancy automobiles. Be cautious which you do not use any images subject to copyright.

You can also add some ?testimonials? to your portal internet site. You might have to be careful not to deliberately mislead individuals; but an ambiguous statement including ?I was working 56 hours a week at a dead end job and now earn more than $10,000 a month ? Brenda K.? are not illegal. Simply because you are not directly saying that doing surveys could be the purpose Brenda K. is now earning $10,000 a month. Brenda K. could have won the lottery and is taking her winnings within a monthly payout.

In addition to possessing numerous hyperlinks directing folks to the survey internet sites for which you are going to get a referral fee, it is possible to also add other marketing in your web site. You can find a number of companies that offer pennies on the dollar every single time somebody clicks on their ad that?s in your website. This really is just another way to produce revenue for your survey portal website.

Essentially the most critical issue you?ll want to understand the best way to do is marketplace your site. Moreover to hundreds of paid on the web survey sites, there are also hundreds of free of charge blogging sites. Sign up for them, make as numerous ?friends? as you?ll be able to and tout the good results of the on the web business everyday inside your weblog (delivering a link for your website, needless to say),

While this technique of producing funds might be just this side of the law and takes a bit of time, a small initial cash investment and periodic updates, this is the only strategy to make money within the on the web surveys for money game. PT Barnum knew it; other people know it and now you do, too. There is a sucker born every minute.

Just ensure the ?sucker? is not you.

Colombia government seeks peace with FARC rebels

Fernando Vergara / AP

During a televised speech on Monday, Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos says that his government had held exploratory talks with rebels of the the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

BOGOTA, Colombia -- Colombia's government is seeking peace with the country's biggest rebel group, the FARC, and could consider also holding talks with a second guerrilla movement to end five decades of war, the country's president said on Monday.?

"(W)e have had exploratory conversations with the FARC to seek an end to the conflict,"?President Juan Manuel Santos?said in a televised address from the presidential palace, confirming weeks of swirling rumors that his government had started behind-the-scenes discussions.

A successful peace agreement with the rebels would secure Santos a place in history as the leader who ended a conflict that has killed tens of thousands over the years and left the Andean nation's reputation in tatters.?

Santos also said his government would learn from the mistakes of so many previous leaders who tried but failed to clinch a lasting cease-fire with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.?

He said that the military would continue its operations "throughout every centimeter" of Colombia while talks continued.?Santos did not provide further details, but said he would reveal more about the talks in the coming days.?

The president has said he would consider peace talks with the FARC only if he was certain the drug-funded group would negotiate in good faith.?The last peace effort ended in shambles.?

Colombia 'milestone' as FARC frees captives after over a decade

In response to a Reuters interview published on Monday with the head of the nation's second biggest rebel group, Santos said the National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, could also be involved in the peace talks.?

"Today the ELN has expressed, via an international news agency, its interest in participating in conversations to put an end to the violence," the president said in his brief speech.?

"I tell that group that, within the same framework, they too can be part of the effort to end the conflict."?

'People's army'?
The FARC, which calls itself "the people's army" defending peasant rights, has battled about a dozen governments since appearing in 1964, when its founder, Manuel Marulanda, and 48 rebels fought off thousands of troops in jungle hide-outs.?

The group has faced its biggest setbacks in recent years as U.S.-trained special forces use sophisticated technology and spy networks to track the leaders.?

Jaime Saldarriaga / Reuters, file

A member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) runs during a battle with the Colombian army in the mountains of Jambalo, in the province of Cauca, on July 12. Cauca province -- known colloquially to soldiers as Cauca-kistan for the intensity of combat there -- has been one of the hottest regions of the conflict and it is a strategic area for the production and transport of cocaine.

A string of defeats began in 2008 with a cross-border military raid into Ecuador that killed its second in command. Marulanda died of a heart attack weeks later and was replaced by Alfonso Cano, who was later killed too.?

But there has been a recent uptick in violence. Attacks on oil industry installations have jumped 40 percent over the last year, while violent clashes between troops and indigenous protesters led to withering criticism of Santos for not protecting the soldiers.?

Six people were killed, including two children, in a FARC bomb attack in central Meta province on Sunday.

Political future for rebels?
Details of the talks are still being worked out, the source said, but the negotiations could take place in Cuba or Norway. President Barack Obama is aware of the process and is in agreement, the Reuters source said.?

According to Colombian newspaper El Espectador, among the central issues going into the talks will be whether the FARC will be granted a political role, whether lands lost during the fighting will be returned to farmers, whether the rebels will lay down their arms, and whether rebel leaders will be subject to extradition.

Notorious druglord arrested, headed to US?

In 1988 former President Andres Pastrana ceded the FARC a safe haven the size of Switzerland to promote talks. The rebels took advantage of the breathing space to train fighters, build more than 25 airstrips to fly drug shipments, and set up prison camps to hold its hostages.?

A Colombian intelligence source told Reuters earlier that as part of the deal to hold talks, Santos had agreed FARC rebels would not be extradited to any other country to stand trial.?

(Link to Spanish-language article in El Espectador)

Colombia's congress passed a constitutional reform in June that set the legal basis for eventual peace with the rebels. The reform prohibits guerrilla leaders accused of crimes against humanity from holding political office.?

Guarded hope
News of the latest peace effort was met with guarded hope among Colombians.?

"Honestly, full peace is probably never possible. Of course it would be good ... but really, an end to the war? I think an end to the world will happen first," said Maria Eugenia Martinez as she sold cigarettes in an upscale Bogota neighborhood.?

Colombians dismantle police post in protest at FARC clashes

Santos discussed the peace process during talks in Havana with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuba's former leader Fidel Castro before the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia earlier this year, the intelligence source said.?

In a recent interview with Reuters, Santos said he would only start a peace process "with a high probability of success. I would not start a process to fail."?

News of the talks had already angered Santos' predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, who has slammed Santos for wanting "peace at any cost" and allowing the rebels to rearm and regroup.?

Explosion in Bogota kills at least two and injures former interior minister

Santos, a former defense minister, won election in 2010 by a landslide, pledging to cut unemployment and continue Uribe's hard line security policies, while fostering economic growth and reducing poverty.?

While much of the world struggles to shore up fiscal accounts, Colombia's financial management, buoyant economy and security advances have helped shield its economy from too much fallout from the international financial crisis.?

Once an outcast for most foreign companies, the Andean nation has become a magnet for investment as a U.S.-backed offensive against the FARC sharply reduced the number of kidnappings and murders. The nation was rewarded last year with an investment grade from three major credit-rating agencies.?

Reuters contributed to this report.

Divorced parents in hostile relationships use technology to sabotage ...

Just divorced photo by Jennifer PahlkaSeparated and divorced couples are increasingly using emails, texting and social media to communicate with their ex-partners about their children. However, when ex-spouses use that technology to withhold or manipulate information, the children are the ones who suffer most, according to a University of Missouri family studies expert.

A new study suggests divorce counselors should teach separated parents effective ways to use communication technology in order to maintain healthy environments for their children.

Lawrence Ganong, a professor of human development and family studies at MU, found that ex-partners who were cooperative with one another used emails and texting to facilitate effective co-parenting, while couples who did not get along used communication technology to avoid confrontations and control their former partners? access to their children.

?Technology makes it easier for divorced couples to get along, and it also makes it easier for them not to get along,? said Ganong, who also is a professor of nursing at MU. ?Parents who use technology effectively can make co-parenting easier, which places less stress on the children. Parents who use communication technology to manipulate or withhold information from the other parent can cause pain to the child.?

Ganong and his colleagues interviewed 49 divorced parents individually about the quality of their relationships with their ex-partners.

Parents who had cooperative relationships saw communication technology (email, texting) as an effective tool to coordinate exchanges of their children, and some even used online calendars to share information about their children?s activities. However, separated parents who had hostile relationships used the same technology to manipulate their ex-spouses and limit communication. For example, some parents in the study pretended they never received emails from their former partners. Regardless of how the couples got along, nearly all of the divorced parents used communication technology to maintain household boundaries and establish records of decisions.

When divorces end with some hostility between the parents, Ganong suggests that divorce counselors focus on teaching the couples effective ways to use technology to communicate with one another. ?Doing so will help children transition more smoothly between the two homes and keep them from being caught in the middle of their parents? conflicts, he said.

?Parents who are hostile need to set their feelings aside and understand that they need to communicate effectively in order to protect the emotional well-being of their children,? Ganong said. ?Email is a great resource for hostile parents who can?t talk face-to-face. They can communicate essential information while editing what they say to avoid conflict. Also, the parents have a record of what was agreed upon.?

Ganong is a professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies in the College of Human Environmental Sciences and also is a professor in the Sinclair School of Nursing.

The study, ?Communication Technology and Postdivorce Coparenting? was co-authored by Marilyn Coleman, Richard Feistman and Tyler Jamison from the University of Missouri and Melinda Stafford Markham from Kansas State University. The study was published last month in the journal Family Relations.

Gov. Scott Walker heckled during speaking event in Tampa - WITI

TAMPA ? A shortened Republican National Convention is set to kick off on Tuesday, August 28th in Tampa, Florida. GOP officials already canceled Monday?s planned first day of the convention due to Isaac, the tropical storm growing to hurricane strength in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida. The GOP Convention is the Republican Party?s chance to show America the real Mitt Romney before the November election, top Republicans said Sunday. Romney is expected to formally accept the Party?s nomination for the White House during the Convention.

The GOP Convention is heavily influenced by Wisconsin politicians ? including Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who is scheduled to speak and congressman Paul Ryan, who is Romney?s vice-presidential selection.

FOX6?s Mike Lowe is in Tampa for the Convention, and Sunday, Gov. Walker addressed what was supposed to be a friendly audience, but faced an emotional response.

As Tampa waited for Tropical Storm Isaac Sunday, Wisconsin?s lightning rod governor brought a political storm to a rally for the religious right. Gov. Walker was the featured speaker at Ralph Reed?s Faith and Freedom Coalition event.

Almost as soon as he opened his mouth, he was interrupted with chants of ?Walker Hates Workers.?

Several protesters were taken out of the Tampa Theater by police. Some of them unfurled banners that said ?Walker has a Koch problem? ? a reference to the billionaire brothers David and Charles Koch, who are among Gov. Walker?s top campaign contributors.

?We don?t have money. All we have is our voices, and we have people, so we have to do demonstrations like this to get our messages heard,? Tyler Mitchell said.

Gov. Walker used the demonstration to underscore his message that disagreements don?t need to be disrespectful.

?What we?re really talking about is indeed about faith and freedom and it?s at stake right now, and it?s something we need to stand up firm, and something I hope my two kids learned in the last year and a half ? stay true to your principles, and never sink to the level of those who seek to attack you,? Gov. Walker said.

Some in the conservative audience were taken aback by the disruption.

?They won?t let anybody talk to them and tell them and teach them anything. They know it all, but they know nothing,? Dorothy Larson said.

Gov. Walker, who has seen crowds of 100,000 at the Capitol in Madison, brushed it off as the work of a few on the fringe.

?The vast majority want to hear people talk. People like someone who is willing to stand up on principle. That?s why in our re-election, or recall election, why we won with Republicans and independents and ultimately some discerning Democrats ? most voters are hungry for principled leadership,? Gov. Walker said.

Danielle Villarreal is a protester from Chicago.

?Walker represents the union-busting figure in the United States, which is completely wrong. He was re-elected, but with the amount of propaganda in our society, people end up voting against their own interests,? Villarreal said.

It was a minor political storm Sunday, as Republicans readied themselves for the real thing ? Tropical Storm Isaac, Gov. Walker said he?s not worried about the storm?s impact on the Republican National Convention, saying: ?We?re Republicans. We fix things.?

One third less life on planet Earth? Scientists offer better estimate of living biomass

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Previous estimates about the total mass of all life on our planet have to be reduced by about one third. This is the result of a study by a German-U.S. science team published in the current online issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

According to previous estimates about one thousand billion tons of carbon are stored in living organisms, of which 30% in single-cell microbes in the ocean floor and 55 % reside in land plants. The science team around Dr. Jens Kallmeyer of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and University of Potsdam has now revised this number: Instead of 300 billion tons of carbon there are only about 4 billion tons stored in subseafloor microbes. This reduces the total amount of carbon stored in living organisms by about one third.

Previous estimates were based on drill cores that were taken close to shore or in very nutrient-rich areas. "About half of the world's ocean is extremely nutrient-poor. For the last 10 years it was already suspected that subseafloor biomass was overestimated" explains Dr. Jens Kallmeyer the motivation behind his study. "Unfortunately there were no data to prove it." Therefore Kallmeyer and his colleagues from the University of Potsdam and the University of Rhode Island, USA, collected sediment cores from areas that were far away from any coasts and islands. The six-year work showed that there were up to one hundred thousand times less cells in sediments from open-ocean areas, which are dubbed "deserts of the sea" due to their extreme nutrient depletion, than in coastal sediments.

With these new data the scientists recalculated the total biomass in marine sediments and found these new, drastically lower values.

Despite of the high logistic and financial efforts for marine drilling operations there are more data of the abundance of living biomass in the sea floor than of their abundance on land. ?Our new results show the need to re-examine the other numbers as e.g. the amount of carbon in deep sediments on land," Jens Kallmeyer states. In particular the research into the ?Deep Biosphere" is still in the fledgling stages; this is life that can be found in kilometer's depth inside Earth's crust. The new findings contribute to a better picture of the distribution of living biomass on Earth.

Passing on an eating disorder | smh.com.au ? Earl's View

Passing on an eating disorder | smh.com.au.

NOTE: Found this?fascinating as my 10 year old daughter won?t eat solid food ? all has to be liquids and soups. Normal hight and weight but not eating normally and no obvious reason,?despite tests and barium meal X-Rays. Mother dosen?t have an eating disorder in this case. But who knows what is in the genes?

Claire Vickery was not surprised when scientists announced that eating disorders have a genetic link, because she and her two daughters suffered from the illness.

Eating disorders specialist Professor Howard Steiger, of McGill University in Montreal, told a conference in Adelaide last week that new discoveries in epigenetics show mothers pass a genetic predisposition to eating disorders to their children.

?The science of epigenetics is relatively new,? he said at the National Eating Disorders Collaboration National Workshop. ?Epigenetics helps explain how adverse development, stress, malnutrition and other influences can affect development of mental-health problems ? including eating disorders.?

Ms Vickery, 56, said she had bulimia from the ages of 16 to 29. ?I?m sure I?m carrying the gene.?

However, the president of the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders, Dr Anthea Fursland, said that genes alone would not result in a child developing an eating disorder. ?Genetic influences do play a part but they will not cause an eating disorder on their own,? she said. ?Eating disorders arise as result of a combination of factors but the common factor in every case is dieting.?

Ms Vickery?s two daughters, Anna and Laura, both had eating disorders when they were younger. They have all recovered but Ms Vickery?s experience led her to set up the Butterfly Foundation, which encourages prevention, treatment and support of those affected by eating disorders.

Professor Steiger said epigenetics would play a large role in understanding eating disorders. ?If eating disorders are about anything, they?re about the ways in which environments switch on hereditary vulnerabilities,? he said.

?It will give us a better understanding how it is that some people develop an eating disorder. It?s not due to moral weakness or character flaws, but real susceptibilities, for which we can find real physical evidence.?

By identifying the genes, he hopes to develop a test and even medication.

One of Ms Vickery?s daughters, Anna Spraggett, who is 33 and has three children, said she was excited about the discovery. ?It?s a positive step forward to finding a cure and treatment,? she said.

While she thinks that environmental factors play a part, Ms Vickery said if parents were aware their children were susceptible, they could be mindful of stressful triggers.

?This is not about guilt for mothers,? she said. ?But if there was a take-home message, it?s to choose your words with children ? no fat talk in the household ? or ever, in fact.?

September is Emergency Preparedness Month | Senior Care

Each year, as we head toward September, thoughts turn to the end of summer, the start of school and, in my line of work, Emergency Preparedness for seniors. Really, it does. ?Especially over the past decade, we have had several reminders of the importance of doing this. And each year during this past decade, the resources and ideas have only improved, so that with just a little research, one can find great ideas and checklists for the ?must haves? in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. The last time I wrote about this subject was in September 2011, but this year I thought I would start in August, as it is not too early to start preparing and gathering the items listed below. Credit for this list must be given to the ?Power of 50? in the July-August 2012 edition of the AARP Bulletin. This list comes right from there. Isaac set to hit Haiti; alert issued for south Florida

Those considered most vulnerable were urged to move into an evacuation camp housed in a school building, but others with nowhere else to go were digging trenches to avoid the water. Haiti's population remains especially vulnerable due to the country's sprawling shanty towns. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

By NBC News and wire reports

Updated at 5:45 p.m. ET: Tropical Storm Isaac built up strength Friday as it headed towards landfall in Haiti overnight, while a tropical storm watch was issued for the Florida Keys and other parts of southern Florida.

With sustained winds now at 65 mph, up from 50 mph Friday morning, Isaac could pass near Florida's Gulf Coast early Monday just as the Republican National Convention is scheduled to start in Tampa.?

Winds at tropical storm strength extend 185 miles out from Isaac's center, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an afternoon advisory, making it a very wide storm.

On exiting Haiti, Isaac's center should cross Cuba on Saturday, and then pass south of the Florida Keys before making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane overnight Tuesday somewhere between New Orleans and Tallahassee, NBC meteorologist Al Roker said Friday on TODAY. Warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico will be "energy for the storm" as it makes its way across the gulf, he added.

In related developments Friday:

  • The U.S. embassy in Haiti sent an e-mail to American citizens in the country warning that flights into and out of Port-au-Prince have been suspended due to Isaac.
  • Oil and gas producers in the Gulf of Mexico started preparing as Isaac's track looked to skirt the heart of the U.S. offshore energy producing zone. BP?said it would shut down its giant Thunder Horse platform, the world's largest. Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron and Apache Corp. said they would evacuate some workers from their Gulf platforms with no production impacts. Other offshore drillers were likely to shut production in coming days as the storm approaches.
  • The U.S. military moved 22 F-16s from?Homestead Air Reserve Base in Florida to Fort Worth, Texas. Three F-15s from the base are on alert to move to Jacksonville if necessary.

How do you salvage vacation plans when a hurricane strikes? NBC's Chris Clackum reports.

South Florida could see a few twisters and heavy rain -- some 5-10 inches Sunday and into Monday, weather.com experts said in an online chat with readers Friday.

Florida has not been hit by a major hurricane since 2005 and officials are concerned that residents there have become complacent.

Aid workers prep Haiti's tent city residents for Isaac's onlsaught

"I think it's a challenge of getting people to understand their risk and make sure they?ve got a plan," said Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

With more than 19 million people living across the Sunshine State, Fugate wants every Florida resident to have enough supplies to last 72 hours and to know when to evacuate.

Click this image to get to our Atlantic storm tracker.

"I think the most dangerous thing is when people keep waiting to see what the next forecast is even if they?re in an evacuation zone. They say, 'Oh, it?s just a Category 1 storm or a minimum hurricane.' We?ve seen significant impacts from tropical storm force winds and rain," Fugate added.

In the Florida Keys, where there are few routes available for evacuation -- U.S. 1, Key West International Airport, and the Florida Keys Marathon Airport -- Mayor Craig Cates said his biggest concern was the storm's timing. Cates said he would need at least 36 hours to begin evacuations of tourists and residents.

"If it (Isaac) comes straight on to Key West, we?re worried about the damage that could happen in Key West. If it goes further up the Keys, it could damage power lines and we could get affected," Cates said. "Even if it hits further up the state, we have got to be prepared with our generators and our supplies. Being on an island, we understand that."

Forecasters with The Weather Channel think the evacuation decisions could come quickly. It is anticipated that watches will be issued for South Florida and the Keys by Friday night. In the event of an evacuation, Cates told The Weather Channel that tourists would leave first, followed by special needs citizens.?

Transcript of weather.com experts answering Isaac questions?

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said?state officials are working with convention organizers, who will ultimately make the call on a delay or cancellation of the event.

State officials?announced Thursday that they will wait to make decisions about moving supplies until after Isaac passes Cuba. FEMA has already placed food and generators in Jacksonville. ?

Isaac is forecast to remain a tropical storm after crossing the Dominican Republic and Haiti and then passing over Cuba into the Florida Straits.

Tampa officials have not ruled out the possibility of postponing the GOP Convention if the storm poses a public safety risk. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

The National Hurricane Center?warned it was "important not to focus on the exact track because of forecast uncertainties and the fact that Isaac has a large area of tropical storm force winds."

Follow Isaac's path with our storm tracker

Isaac was expected to dump between 8 and 12 inches of rain over parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and up to 20 inches in a few areas. That poses a significant threat to Haiti, which is highly prone to flooding and mudslides because of its near-total deforestation.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, still has about 350,000 people living in tents or makeshift shelters more than 2-1/2 years after a devastating earthquake that took more than a quarter of a million lives.

With nearly 400,000 people still living in evacuation tents, a hurricane or even a tropical storm could lead to deaths and more damage to the already fragile country. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Red Cross workers toured crowded tent camps of Haitians left homeless by the 2010 quake to warn about Isaac.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic evacuated people living on the banks of rivers, streams and areas vulnerable to landslides in preparation for the approach of Isaac, whose effects were beginning to be felt with showers in the south of the country.

Chattanooga Real Estate Market ? Builder Confidence Up ...

Fox News reports that the August home builder confidence index is up.? Builders are feeling better about building new homes.? The inventory of new homes is going down, so the demand for new homes is up.

I just sold a great new home built by Choo Choo Homes in Ooltewah, TN, a week ago.? They have been building homes for 26 years, and they do a good job of it.??John Stutz, of Choo Choo Homes,?told me that the banks are letting them build a very small number of homes at a time compared to the post-2008 lending market.? This is a builder with a long track record, but the banks are?still being overly cautious with him.? Even?Jay Bell, the 2nd generation of Bell Construction in Chattanooga, TN,?told me that the banks would only let him build 1 house at a time per subdivision when the market was at its lowest point 2 years ago.? Overly strict lending is keeping builders from building more new homes at the moment, but the confidence to?build new homes?is there.
