The Rise of the Mobile Internet: Who Will Be Disrupted?

The Internet as we know it is changing fast. ?A new report by Strategy Analytics found that global smartphone shipments are growing 35% annually. ?In the third quarter alone, 162 million smartphones shipped worldwide. This rapid growth in smartphones tracks well with analyst predictions?including Mary Meeker?that the mobile Internet will soon surpass the fixed Internet in terms of the number of users.

Although those numbers are astounding, and Wall Street analysts will spill a lot of (digital) ink over what those numbers mean for smartphone manufacturers, I want to discuss what this means for the ?Internet?. ?After all, the Internet ? although many people have come to think of it as Facebook, Yahoo, YouTube and Google ? is just a universal communications protocol. ?It takes the shape of what people are doing and what users want. ?As the web becomes more ?mobile?, it will transform to the needs and desires of end users. ?With the growth of smartphones, static websites are being displaced by interactive apps (and these apps are even filtering back to the desktop world ? with cool new browser apps like TweetDeck). ?Two years ago, Wired opined on this phenomenon:

The Web is, after all, just one of many applications that exist on the Internet, which uses the IP and TCP protocols to move packets around. This architecture ? not the specific applications built on top of it ? is the revolution. Today the content you see in your browser ? largely HTML data delivered via the http protocol on port 80 ? accounts for less than a quarter of the traffic on the Internet ? and it?s shrinking. The applications that account for more of the Internet?s traffic include peer-to-peer file transfers, email, company VPNs, the machine-to-machine communications of APIs, Skype calls,World of Warcraft and other online games, Xbox Live, iTunes, voice-over-IP phones, iChat, and Netflix movie streaming. Many of the newer Net applications are closed, often proprietary, networks.

And the shift is only accelerating? Because the screens are smaller, such mobile traffic tends to be driven by specialty software, mostly apps, designed for a single purpose. For the sake of the optimized experience on mobile devices, users forgo the general-purpose browser. They use the Net, but not the Web. Fast beats flexible.

What does this mean for the traditional Internet giants? ?Well, for one thing, they are not guaranteed a seat at the table in the future. ?As the NYT recently touched on:

Intel made its fortune on the chips that power personal computers, and Microsoft on the software that goes inside. Google?s secret sauce is that it finds what you are looking for on the Internet. But the ground is shifting beneath these tech titans because of a major force: the rise of mobile devices.

These and other tech companies are scrambling to reinvent their business models now that the old model ? a stationary customer sitting at a stationary desk ? no longer applies. These companies once disrupted traditional businesses, from selling books and music to booking hotels. Now they are being upended by the widespread adoption of smartphones and tablets?.

Demand for Intel chips inside computers ? which are much more profitable than those inside smartphones ? is plummeting. At Microsoft, sales of software for PCs are sharply declining. At Google, the price that advertisers pay when people click on ads has fallen for a year. This is partly because, while mobile ads are exploding, they cost less than Internet ads; advertisers are still figuring out how to make them most effective.

The troubles and travails of traditional Internet companies trying to figure out revenue generating strategies for the new?and much different (as Glenn has touched on at DisCo)?mobile market are well documented as of late as the third quarter bottom line and top line estimates of the Internet giants have come in lower than expected; Google being a high profile example. ?Facebook, recently criticized and downgraded because of their mobile outlook, actually had a positive third quarter earnings report?largely because they saw unexpected gains in their ability to generate mobile revenue.

What does this mean for disruptive innovation? ?Paradigm shifts in technology tend to shake up markets and incumbents struggle to remain relevant, as these examples illustrate:?

  • Apple, which helped pioneer the desktop computer, was quickly sidelined by Microsoft and flirted with bankruptcy. ?(In an ironic twist of fate, an investment from Microsoft?arguably driven by the antitrust concerns swirling around the Redmond giant?and the corollary commitment to make Mac versions of its Office software, probably saved the Cupertino company from disappearing.) ?Looking for a market niche, the company leapt out ahead of customer demand (and its PC competitors) and transformed the mobile device market?and completely disrupted RIM who buried themselves with the bet that corporate users would never switch to a touchscreen phone. ?An afterthought a decade ago, the company has become the current world?s most valuable company.

It is not surprising that three of the companies listed above (IBM, Microsoft and Apple) have been (or, in Apple?s case, is currently) the most valuable companies in the world. ?Fast-moving technology markets are both a blessing and a curse for the companies that come out on top. ?These paradigm shifts allowed Microsoft to unseat IBM and Apple to leap its archrival Microsoft and soar to great heights (and concurrently astronomic stock prices). ?Unfortunately for the new market leaders, when firms figure out how to do something well, they often get stuck in that track and then become vulnerable to disruption.

However, business managers are becoming smarter, thanks to the increased understanding of disruptive innovation. ?Not too long ago, the leading theory on why market leaders quickly became relics was that they simply couldn?t keep up with the pace of innovation?the ?technology mudslide hypothesis,? as Clayton Christensen called it. ?The problem with this view is that it counseled managers to plow all their resources into innovating in the firm?s core competencies and what their leading customers want at that moment (make more powerful chips, higher capacity hard drives, faster/bigger cars, etc). ?This made them more vulnerable to disruption, as disruptive innovators hit the market leader from an entirely different angle (more efficient chips, smaller hard drives, tinier/fuel-efficient cars, etc.).

Now, as the process of disruptive innovation is better understood, market leaders are on the lookout for how to remain relevant?and not be singularly focused on their core business. ?(Decentralized innovation strategies like Google?s famous 20% time or Facebook?s Hack-a-months are ways to deal with this.) ?And to give credit where credit is due, IBM ? who was itself disrupted by the PC revolution ? completely reinvented itself as a services company, which is not easy to do for a major company with significant institutional inertia (although it was also a case of ?desperate times, desperate measures? that gave the corporate giant a push to overcome the inertia).

This is fear of disruption is why Yahoo!, and its enterprising new CEO Marissa Mayer, have staked the company?s future on the mobile market, and why Apple, Microsoft, Samsung and Google all had high-profile product announcements for their new mobile devices within the span of 10 days (and probably the reason why Google is hesitant to make ?mobile concessions? to settle their antitrust case with the EU, which could hamper the company?s ability to adjust to the mobile Internet future where the traditional ?10 blue links? search engine will be a dinosaur). ?As one industry analyst put it: ?It?s hilarious to talk about traditional Web business like it?s been going on for centuries, but it?s last century.? ?Although it is currently unclear who will be king of the next technology paradigm, if the history of disruptive innovation tells us anything, the mobile landscape will look a lot different than the traditional Internet.

8 Most Popular Home Projects During the Winter Months | DIY ...

When it gets cold outside and you have to put away your?lawnmower, rakes and shovels, if you are a person that loves a project, how about you move the projects indoors?!

There are many home improvement projects that are perfectly suited for cold weather and some items that just need to be taken care of before it gets too cold.

In this DIY Reviews guide, we have put together a list of projects that you might consider this winter and a few that we suggest you complete to make sure your family stays safe and healthy for the winter months.

Chimney Cleaning

The cold weather has arrived and if you frequently use your fireplace to heat your home, or even for the occasional weekend fire, you should have your chimney cleaned and inspected. The estimated number of households that use fireplaces as the primary means of heating their home is around 33% and with our economic climate, those numbers are on track to climb. Without regular cleaning and maintenance, creosote can block the airflow in your chimney which could cause a major fire. Not to mention, harmful smoke can fill your house if your chimney is clogged, causing harmful effects on the health of you and your family.?Since October is Fire Prevention Month, we want to take the proper precautions to stay safe.

Plan to have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional before seasonal use. These inspections should included interior & exterior inspection and cleaning, as well as a list of any items that need to be repaired. For an idea of items that may need to be repaired and the cost associated, check out the Chimney Repair Cost Guide for helpful information. ?If you have gas logs in your home, you still need to have these inspections completed before you fire it up for the first time!

Roof Repair

A leaky roof can ruin the holidays! That is why you should keep on top of roof repairs before they become big problem. Some DIY?ers don?t have a problem going up on the roof to blow leaves out of the gutters and inspecting the roof for problems, but personally, I won?t go on the roof! It is, however, something I will pay for a professional to do because it is that important. A leak in your roof can not only ruin a room in your home, but if kept unchecked, can cause a collapse. Before you decide to call a professional, hop over to our article, Common Roof Repairs & The Estimate Cost to Fix Them! so you know what to expect in case repairs are needed.

Pipe Wrapping & Insulation

Insulating your pipes will only help you save on energy bills by preventing heat loss, but it will also keep pipes from freezing during a severe cold snap. Pipe insulation is a simple DIY home improvement project that can be performed in a couple of hours; as long as you have the right materials. The DIY Network has a fantastic tutorial that can step you through the process and help you save money!

Furnace Inspection and Tune-Up

Unfortunately, its a fact of life ? furnaces always seem to go out during the coldest week of the year! Ideally, you will stay one step ahead by making sure your HVAC system is inspected twice a year ? spring and fall. This is not usually a DIY project because HVAC contractors have specialized tools and skills to make sure your inspection and cleaning is thorough and safe. Your inspection should include indoor and outdoor equipment, so make sure whomever you call out to do the work has a checklist and shows you everything they have completed.

There are, however, a few items for those that are particularly handy that can be done?in-between?inspections. We go into more detail on our HVAC System Maintenance Checklist and suggest you give it a read and perform those items you feel comfortable with.

Indoor Painting

Cool weather is the best time to spruce up the inside of your home and touch up or repaint some of those walls that are looking outdated. During the summer, it doesn?t matter if you open the windows to air out a new paint job, it still feels stagnant. With cooler weather, you can crack the windows to let the fumes air out a bit and let some of the crisp, clean air in. Indoor painting is one of the least expensive home improvement projects and a way to add value to your home. In addition, it is a perfect DIY project.

Carpet or Flooring Replacement

Much like indoor painting, cool weather is the best time to change your carpet or rip it up and install hardwood floors throughout. For one thing, most people choose to install new carpeting during the summer because professionals will tell you that especially for hardwoods, spring or summer is the best time ? making this the most expensive time to buy new flooring. Though opinions differ on when you should install flooring, as long as the room is at a temperature between 66 ? 72 degrees, you should be fine. So, why not buy when its cheap?

You can save some money by buying the flooring yourself, then hiring a contractor to install it. Before you go out and start buying, consider taking a look at our article on how to estimate hardwood floor installation; this way, you won?t make mistakes when you purchase and need to go buy more.

Weatherizing Doors & Windows

The biggest heat loss in most homes is poorly insulated windows and doors, and this is an easy project for any homeowner. ?To put into perspective just how much heat loss can occur, Build It Solar has a handy heat loss calculator that will provide an estimate of heat loss for your home.?Before it gets too cold, spend an afternoon applying new weatherstripping around your doors, and window frames. There are many types of weatherstripping on the market and each provide a different purpose. To get more information on the different types of weatherstripping and their uses, check out our article,?Weatherstripping , The Different Types of Weatherstripping, where we provide helpful information that can help with your project.

Seal Cracks and Holes

Other areas where heat can seep out of your home are around your chimney, attic access doors and around basement doors and windows.

To seal attic access doors;?First apply foam weatherstripping so the door closes tightly. If the gap is wider than the foam tape, you can use 2 layers if needed. You can also further insulate the door by applying a layer of insulation ? (on the attic side).

For insulating basement doors and windows: First, caulk around windows and weatherstrip basement doors. Cover any unused windows with plastic on the side or you might also consider applying a decorative window tinting if you want them to look a little better.

For instructions on how to?seal your fireplace and chimney, check out the great video below:

Romney more likely to break political gridlock, poll says | NOLA.com

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney shakes hands with supporters during a campaign stop at the University of Miami on Wednesday in Coral Gables, Fla. A recent poll found more voters trust Romney, over President Barack Obama, to break the political gridlock in Washington. (Photo by AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)

WASHINGTON -- Just about everybody agrees Washington is a gridlocked mess. But who's the man to fix it? After two years of brawling and brinkmanship between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans, more voters trust Mitt Romney to break the stalemate, an Associated Press-GfK poll shows.

Romney's message -- a vote for Obama is a vote for more gridlock -- seems to be getting through. Almost half of likely voters, 47 percent, think the Republican challenger would be better at ending the logjam, compared with 37 percent for Obama.

With the race charging into its final week, Romney is pushing that idea. He increasingly portrays himself as a get-things-done, work-with-everybody pragmatist, in hopes of convincing independent voters that he can overcome Washington's bitter partisanship. The AP-GfK poll shows the race in a virtual dead heat, with Romney at 47 percent to Obama's 45 percent, a difference within the margin of sampling error.

At a rally Wednesday in Coral Gables, Fla., Romney recounted how he worked with the Democratic-led Legislature as governor of Massachusetts and insisted he would find common ground with Democrats in Washington, too: "We can't change course in America if we keep attacking each other. We've got to come together and get America on track again."

Obama made his own show of bipartisanship Wednesday, touring superstorm Sandy devastation alongside Republican Gov. Chris Christie in New Jersey. A major Romney supporter, Christie has been praising Obama's "outstanding" response to the natural disaster.

Obama counters the Washington gridlock question by predicting that Republican lawmakers focused on opposing his re-election will become more cooperative once he wins a second term and becomes ineligible to run again. Referring to the top Republicans in Congress, Obama joked he would "wash John Boehner's car" or "walk Mitch McConnell's dog" to help get a federal deficit-cutting deal.

Obama also argues that Romney is more conservative these days than when he was elected governor and will find his newer ideas don't go down easily with Senate Democrats. For example, Romney, who worked with legislators to pass a health care overhaul in Massachusetts, has vowed to repeal the Democrats' similar national health care law.

In the AP-GfK poll, about 1 out of 6 likely voters didn't take a side on the gridlock issue: 6 percent weren't sure who would do a better job at getting Washington moving and 10 percent didn't trust either man to break the impasse among congressional partisans.

"They all need to be taken by the ear by a grandma," voter Margaret Delaney, 65, said in frustration.

She lives in Janesville, Wis., the hometown of Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, and she's leaning toward voting for the GOP ticket. But when it comes to ending gridlock, Delaney thinks it may not matter whether Romney or Obama is president.

"I'm not sure either of them can do it," she said.

A political standoff last year came close to forcing the government to default on its bills and led Standard & Poor's to downgrade the United States' credit rating. Over the past two years, a Congress split between Republican and Democratic leadership posted one of the least productive sessions in history.

When lawmakers return after Election Day for a lame-duck session, they need to work together with Obama to solve some festering troubles, including the "fiscal cliff" -- a looming combination of higher taxes and spending cuts that could trigger another recession if Congress doesn't find a resolution.

If re-elected, Obama will almost certainly face another two years or more of divided government. Polling in the states suggests Republicans are likely to keep the control of the U.S. House that they won in 2010. And tea partyers who stymied efforts to reach a deficit-reduction deal seem certain to remain a substantial presence.

There's a good chance that a President Romney would face a split Congress, as well. Democrats appear to have an edge in holding onto their Senate majority, especially if the presidential race remains close. At least a dozen of the 33 Senate races remain competitive, making the overall outcome tough to predict.

Obama also likes to remind Democrats and like-minded independent voters that he serves as a check on congressional Republicans. The president suggests Romney would be unwilling to stand up to "the more extreme parts of his party."

Leigh Westholm of Pensacola, Fla., said that's why she supports Obama's re-election even though she doesn't think he will be able to make peace with House Republicans.

"It takes two to tango and he has tried and tried for four years," Westholm said. "It might be better for Romney, but I don't agree with his views."

But Romney supporter Gary Bivins, a 57-year-old West Chester, Ohio, retiree volunteering in his first presidential campaign, says don't blame Congress.

A president needs the ability to lead, he said, and "I think Obama has shown no skill in that area."

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Oct. 19-23 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,186 adults nationwide, including 839 likely voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, for likely voters it is 4.2 points.

PTT sets Bt6bn budget for 5-year expansion - The Nation

Retail oil business

WATCHARA PUSAYANAWIN
THE NATION
Vientiane October 30, 2012 1:00 am

President and chief executive officer Pailin Chuchottaworn said the company had earmarked spending of between Bt5 billion and Bt6 billion through to 2017 to build new service stations and renovate existing outlets in Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines.

The move aims to serve the Asean Economic Community, which is to come into effect in 2015, and build PTT's retail brand into one of the top in each of these countries.

Pailin made the announcement yesterday when PTT inaugurated its first service station in Nong Tang, in the Lao capital of Vientiane, in a ceremony jointly presided over by Nam Viyaketh, the country's industry and trade minister.

The Platinum PTT Life Station, the first of its kind outside of Thailand, is designed to popularise the PTT brand around the region and is timed for the run-up to the AEC's launch.

In Laos, PTT plans to spend at least Bt800 million on new-station development and the upgrading of existing service stations. It will expand the number of stations in the country from 20 at present to 60 by the end of 2017, and aims to boost its market share from the current third-ranked operator to second-largest over the period.

Asean is considered a market with vast potential to aid PTT's business expansion into a leading multinational company, Pailin said.

The launch of the Platinum PTT Life Station, a concept that has met with considerable success in Thailand, in Laos is regarded as a pilot retail investment move into a neighbouring country.

LAND-LINK

Laos is a high-potential market and a land-link for Thailand to Vietnam, Cambodia and China, all of which have healthy economic-growth rates, particularly China, which is a huge market with 1.5 billion inhabitants, he said.

PTT is also keen to invest in other countries with growth prospects, such as Myanmar and the Philippines, he added.

"PTT's policy is to invest in the retail fuel business in Asean more explicitly, aiming at becoming a top-three retail brand in each country, not just for fuel and oil marketing, but also for other retail marketing activities accompanying service stations, like Cafe Amazon and Jiffy convenience stores," said the company chief.

Executive vice president Attapol Rerkphiboon said the demand for petrol in Laos tended to increase by more 10 per cent per year, against just 2-3 per cent in Thailand, and this presented a great opportunity for PTT.

The company will also expand the number of service stations in Cambodia from the current 14 to 45 over the next five years, while the number in the Philippines will double to 100.

PTT also hopes to establish 40 service stations in Myanmar, where it presently has no such outlets. The company has set up PTT Oil Myanmar to conduct a feasibility study into retail-station investment.

If all these plans come to fruition, PTT will have a total of 245 stations in these four countries in five years' time.

Attapol said PTT's retail-station business in the Philippines, where there are already many giant operators, would face fierce competition, so it is expected to take three years to become a top-three player in that market.

Meanwhile, the company is also interested in conducting a feasibility study into potential investment in lubricant business in Vietnam and Indonesia, as both countries are yet to open up to foreign investment in retail oil business.

PTT expects its retail oil business across Asean, excluding Thailand, will account for 30 per cent of its estimated overall annual turnover of Bt500 billion in the segment within five years.

Sarun Rungkasiri, senior executive vice president for oil business, said the company had also set aside Bt3 billion for upgrading domestic retail stations to the same Platinum PTT Life Station standard. It currently has 1,300 retail stations across the Kingdom.

Since you need to get in touch with your potential customer or create a brand of your business, it?s important that you create the first impression a huge hit.

When we try to load any website, on our smart phones or tabs, we often find that its takes time to download and the width and height is way too big for a friendly browsing experience, as most of the sites are not optimized for these devices; rather they work well on desktops. This has a negative impact as you are losing a huge share of your market of the mobile users.

You need to think twice before you actually go for a website development. As this will have a long term effect on your business model. It is crucial that your website is optimized for mobile as well as for desktop users. It doesn?t mean that you will have to have two different versions, go with a responsive website design and development, where you only have one website and it will change its structure and appearance based on the device where it is being viewed.

You should always take into account the maintenance factor, as you need to keep it updated and fresh as much as possible by adding new contents from time to time. The best solution would be a Admin section for your usages which will be simple and user friendly so that without much trouble you can keep your site updated if time permits.

Though for small business owner or startups or any professional and individuals, having a responsive layout might be bit costly in general, but I offer the same not only at an affordable price but its highly competitive as well. Why don?t to ask for a free estimate and see how I can help you with your online requirement.

Apart from mobile website solution we also provide website design and development services, ecommerce and Blog solutions, tailored to your budget and constant support as needed after deployment.

It would be a delight if I can work with you on your next assignment and create a lifetime business association.

SS Bday Party Issue is RESURRECTED!!!!!! Why me? | Step Talk

So after deciding that we would throw SS11 a bday party at the park (a neutral place), DH decides to tell me that were having it at our house. HERE WE GO AGAIN! He simply minimizes it to having a kids bday party at the house. Its more than that to me.

I wouldn't have a problem if he wasn't inviting BM. THATS MY PROBLEM with it. He thinks its not right and not fair for his son's mom to not be invited to his party at our house. He's delusional. Most divorced parents celebrate bdays and holidays separately. WTF is the problem? Its more common that these things are separate than combined!

So now he wants me to help out - in other words, run the party, facilitate it, while he grills the burgers in his oblivious little world. UMMMM, I do not want to run around like a chicken with my head cut off entertaining my ungreatful SS, his toxic mom and all her unaccepting family (AT MY HOUSE!) I could strangle him for this putting me in this unpleasant situation as if my family life isn't unpleasant enough.

Whats really bad is that he thinks I'm being difficult, uncooperative and childish because I'm not happy about HIS PLAN for his hell boy. I was willing to help if we had it at a neutral place (which was the plan) now he's changing it and it puts tremendous amounts of pressure and uneasiness on me.

He rather disappoint me then not invite BM. His child's feelings are more important than mine - that is clear. Now I'm supposed to be happy about that and entertain BM and "facilitate" a bday party for a bratty kid who has never thanked me for anything or can barely even acknowledge me and say hello to me in my own home.

IM FURIOUS! He's not budging either, he's unwilling to have it anywhere else.

Brother MFC-J4510DW

In most ways, the Brother MFC-J4510DW ($200 street) is a fairly typical office-oriented inkjet MFP for its price range. It's a little slow, a little short on paper capacity, and packed with all the MFP features you're likely to need. However, it stands out for something you probably wouldn't expect at this price: It can print on up to tabloid size (11 by 17 inch) paper. The sheets have to be manually fed, one at a time, but if you have only an occasional need to print at tabloid size, this could be enough to make the printer your best choice. It's certainly enough to make it Editors' Choice.

The MFC-J4510DW is similar in many ways to the Editors' Choice HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One ($169.99 direct, 4 stars) that I reviewed earlier this year. Both are small enough to serve as personal printers in any size office, but both also offer Ethernet and Wi-Fi as connection choices, so they can serve as shared printers in a micro office. Beyond that, both let you print and fax from, as well as scan to a computer, including over a network, both work as standalone copier and fax machines, and both let you print from or scan to a USB memory key.

Like the HP 6700, the MFC-J4510DW offers Web-connected features and mobile printing. It will let you print from and scan to an assortment of online services, including Google Docs and Dropbox, as well as print from a smartphone or tablet with a Wi-Fi connection, using AirPrint or Brother's own print app. It even offers Wi-Fi Direct for easy connection. Very much worth mention is the 3.7-inch touch screen on the front panel, which makes it easy to both change settings and give commands.

Paper Handling and Size
The MFC-J4510DW's paper handling is a bit of a mixed bag, but much more of a plus overall than a minus. For scanning, as with most office-oriented MFPs, it offers both a letter-size flatbed and an automatic document feeder (ADF) that can handle up to legal size paper. The ADF in this case is only 20 sheets, which is on the low side but should be enough for most micro offices.

For printing, the MFC-J4510DW offers only a 150-sheet input capacity, which is enough for most personal use or for light-duty use for multiple users on a network. Very much on the plus side is that it includes a built-in duplexer (for printing on both sides of a page) and a manual feed slot in the back.

The manual feed slot not only lets you print on different paper stock without having to swap out the paper in the tray, it lets you print on paper as large as 11 by 17 inches (although you can't use automatic duplexing with tabloid size paper). This counts as more than a little unusual for a printer that measures just 7.3 by 18.9 by 11.4 inches (HWD).

The printer manages this paper handling trick very simply. Instead of orienting the paper tray with the long edge of letter-size paper parallel to the sides of the printer, as is typical, it rotates the tray 90 degrees. That puts the 11-inch side of the paper parallel to the front and back of the printer, and it lets you feed tabloid-size paper through the back, with its 11-inch side as the leading edge. You have to feed the pages manually, one sheet at a time, but if you need to print on tabloid size paper only occasionally, and particularly if you print only one or two page documents, that won't be a problem.

Brother MFC-J4510DW

Setup and Speed and Output Quality
For my tests I connected the MFC-J4510DW to a wired network and installed the driver and other software on a system running Windows Vista. Setup was standard.

The printer's speed is best described as within the typical range for the price. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 3.3 pages per minute (ppm), which is essentially a tie with the Officejet 6700, at 3.4 ppm.

As another point of reference, the somewhat more expensive Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J6710DW ($300 street, 4 stars), a true tabloid-size printer, came in at 4.1 ppm. (By true tabloid size, I mean it has two paper trays that can each hold up to 11 by 17-inch paper without needing manual feeding.) Photo speed with glossy photo paper is a reasonably fast 1 minute 7 second average for 4-by-6 photos.

The MFC-J4510DW's output quality is a touch below par overall, primarily because of sub-par graphics quality, but even the graphics output qualifies as acceptable. Text quality is at the low end of the range where the vast majority of inkjets fall, but easily good enough for most business needs.

Graphics output is good enough for internal business needs, but graphics on plain paper in my tests suffered from noticeably dull color and some minor banding. Depending on how much you value vibrant, eye-catching color, you may or may not consider the output suitable for, say, PowerPoint handouts. Photos on glossy photo paper were comparable to typical drug store prints, which, by definition, qualifies as true photo quality.

Ultimately, the MFC-J4510DW earns lots of points for its features, from its ADF to its touch screen controls, and at least doesn't lose any for its speed and output quality. What earns it Editors' Choice, however, is that it offers a useful, if minimal, level of tabloid-size print capability at an extraordinarily low price.

If you print lots of documents at tabloid size, you'll be better off with the more expensive Brother MFC-J6710DW. If you never need to print at tabloid size at all, you can save a little by getting the HP Officejet 6700. If you absolutely must print at tabloid size, but only occasionally and only for short documents, however, the Brother MFC-J4510DW may well be the perfect fit.

How To Help A Loved One Experiencing Domestic Violence | Fem2pt0

This post is originally published on Everyday Feminism.? It is cross-posted with permission.

(Trigger Warning)

Domestic violence, dating violence, relationship violence ? no matter how we label it?s not something we like to talk about. Or perhaps more accurately, it?s not something we know how to talk about ? especially when it?s happening to someone we love.

But it?s really important we learn how to talk about it ? in ways that actually help people going through it (which is far more difficult than you may think).

Why is it important to talk about? Because:

In short, you probably know more people experiencing domestic violence than you think.

What Doesn?t Work

So if you see red flags, what can you do to help someone?

Your first instinct may be to tell the victim that what they?re experiencing is domestic violence and they need to get out.

And when they look at you in surprise or act defensive and say ?I don?t know what you?re talking about?, you?ll probably be confused or feel upset and insist that they leave.

And when they say they?re not being abused (even though you?ve seen the bruises, heard the insults, and watched their self-esteem crumble) or that they can?t leave, you may throw up your hands in frustration and walk away thinking, ?well if they want to stay??

STOP ? Before you go down this very well-intentioned but disempowering path, remember their abuser has probably been working very hard to isolate the victim and destroy their self-esteem and sense of self-worth through emotional, verbal, physical, sexual, financial, and identity abuse.

This can create strong entrenched feelings of shame and embarrassment and often ?victims of domestic violence try to hide what?s going on from their family, friends, colleagues, and any other supportive person or network ? unless the abuser has already driven them away.

And while we know you have good intentions, telling them what they?re experiencing and what they should do about it can further isolate the victim who may or may not be ready to confront their abuse.

It is so important to let the victim determine the next steps, to make their own decisions and take back the power and control over their own lives.

When we make decisions for others, when we try to help them do what they are not ready to do for themselves, we are taking their power and control away from them.

For victims to find the strength and courage to safely navigate away from an abuser, they?re going to need confidence in their power and control over their own story and situation.

And that?s something you can help them with ? reflect back to them the power and control they do have and the good decisions they make everyday. ?This can help them find strength faster.

So how do you have these conversations?? They?re not always easy but here?s a list of ways you can support someone you care about to become empowered and take action to escape the abuse.

Get Support from Your Local Domestic Violence Program

Realizing that someone you care about is being abused is tough and knowing how to approach them may seem even more daunting.

Remember, you?re not alone.? You can reach out to people?s whose job it is to help people in these situations and lean on their advice.

When you call your local domestic violence program, talk to them about:

  • What you can say in the first conversation, especially to better understand what YOU feel comfortable saying. You can even practice with them or role play to make sure you?re not projecting any judgement.
  • What the victim can expect if they call a domestic violence hotline. This can help remove any mystery or fear around reaching out for help.
  • What rights, options and local resources a victim can access in your area.
  • A few basic safety planning tips to help the victim get to a safe place when they can connect with an anti-domestic violence advocate. Safety planning is a tool to help victims think through ways and resources they have ?to try to mitigate a violent situation. Each safety plan is tailored to the victim?s specific situation and needs.
  • How you?re coping with knowing someone you care about is being abused. The impact of abuse isn?t isolated to the victim and can also affect those who care about them. Vicarious trauma is real. So it?s important as you?re supporting them through this situation, that you are also getting support. For survivors of abuse, this is particularly important because it can trigger past trauma, bringing back difficult memories and emotions and leading us to project ourselves into their situation.

Talk To Them For the First Time About the Abuse

The most important thing in such conversations is to communicate your concern without judgment. Let the victim tell their own story and decide their own process.

Remember, no one understands their abuser and their situation better than them. While you may have seen some signs of abuse, there?s probably many things you don?t understand about the relationship that impact how they think and feel.

Instead, focus on creating a space where they can realize their own power and control over their lives and decide what steps they want to take. Remember, this is about them, not you and what you want for them.

Some things to keep in mind during the conversation are:

  • Use words that convey concern about their safety without judgment for their relationship or abuser. Asking why they?re staying with such a terrible person will likely cause them to shut down. Instead, use language like, ?When I saw X happen, I became concerned about your safety. Have you thought about talking to someone about what you are going through?? or ?I?ve heard similar things from other people and I know there are free and confidential hotlines available at any time of the day or night.? This type of language helps them realize they are not responsible for the abusive behavior nor do they have to defend it.
  • Reflect their own power and control back to them while showing your support. One example is, ?Here are resources when you?re ready. I encourage you to make that call. But I want you to know that this is your situation and you know what is best for you. Is there anything I can do to help??
  • Meet them where they?re at and don?t try to change their mind. What they choose to do should be respected, even if it?s to remain with the abuser. While some want to get out of the situation, some may just want the abuse to end. Abusers are not all one-sided evil people, they are complex human beings and some may have been victims in the past as well. Talking to someone safe about what they?re experiencing, seeking out options for the abusers to address their use of violence, or reporting them to the police are all valid options if that?s what the victim wants. What?s important is that they decide who they reach out to and when.
  • Remind them that no one deserves to be abused and that nothing they have done justifies violence against them. Due to the abuse, they may have internalized the batterer?s words that it?s all their fault, that they?re not good enough, that they deserve to be treated this way, and/or that no one else will love them. So reflect back to them that they are good, important, and lovable and deserve better.
  • Be a non-judgemental sounding board as they try to figure out what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like, particularly around emotional and verbal abuse. In our society, unhealthy behaviors like name calling and lashing out in anger are normalized. But in healthy relationships, people acknowledge when they make a mistake or did something wrong and apologize ? abusers don?t. So help them think through how their partner handles conflict. If the batterer does not acknowledge when they do something wrong and blames their partner for their behavior, it can help the victim see the pattern of controlling behavior.
  • Share with them services they can access and how these services can help. Offer your support by accompanying them to a domestic violence organization or be with them when they call a hotline. Remember, don?t push them into doing anything, not only is it controlling and disempowering, they are less likely to follow through.

Support Them through the Long-Haul

Remember, on average it takes 7-13 attempts at leaving before a victim is able to break free from an abusive relationship. And leaving can be the most dangerous time in an abusive relationship and in fact is when most victims are murdered. Leaving takes thoughtful planning, requires established support and needs to be done safely, especially when there are children involved. ?So your first conversation may not lead to change.

But at least you?ve planted the seed that they deserve better and there are people who can and will help.

Depending on the extent of the damage the abuser has done to their self-esteem and sense of self-worth, it can take a long time for a victim to have the strength to take any action other than what they are already doing to cope with the abuse.

So it?s important that you mange your expectations about the impact of your support. You can?t save anyone but you can be there for them, unconditionally.

Otherwise, you can easily end up feeling frustrated and resentful. It can lead to moments where you want to cry out, ?why don?t you just leave??, ?just listen to me and go talk to this organization!?, or even ?I spent all this time researching services for you and you didn?t even call me back!?

It?s not uncommon for people to want to rescue others. While it?s well-intentioned, when we try to solve other?s problems for them, we disempower them.

At the same time, supporting someone in an abusive situation can be difficult and scary. As we mentioned already, get support for yourself from the local domestic violence agency. If you?re a survivor, it?s especially important to take care of yourself so you are not triggered and reliving your own trauma history.

If You Remember Nothing Else

If all this seems overwhelming, remember these words, ?No matter what you decide to do, I will support you and I will be here for you whenever you need me.?

Or if you can?t or don?t want to say that, how about, ?There are free and confidential services that can help you any time of the day or night. You are not alone.?

With these words, you?ve respected their autonomy and reflected back that you trust them to make the best decision for themselves.

And if you say this often enough, it may rise above the abuser?s voice long enough for them to take action to end the abuse.

Young activists wary of delayed deportation policy

ATLANTA (AP) ? Viridiana Martinez has been on the front lines in the debate over immigration reform, organizing protests and getting arrested in acts of civil disobedience. But when the president announced a policy allowing young people like her to temporarily avoid deportation, she was anything but elated.

"It's all political theater," said the 26-year-old who came to the U.S. illegally from Mexico when she was 6 and grew up in North Carolina. "For me, at this point, applying for deferred action would be like accepting that theater, and I can't do that."

The lukewarm responses of Martinez and other leaders of the so-called DREAMers movement come after they have spent months or even years traveling the country while openly declaring themselves "undocumented and unafraid." They have gotten themselves arrested, boldly given interviews to the press and allowed their pictures to be taken, and many are known to immigration authorities, who have taken no steps to deport them.

The policy shift announced by President Barack Obama in June provides a two-year protection from deportation to certain young people brought to this country illegally and the chance to apply for a work permit. Now the young activist leaders are deciding whether it's worth accepting a deal that falls far short of what they're asking for.

Some, like Martinez, are rejecting the program because its narrow scope doesn't provide a path to legalization or any security for their families. But others have decided to apply despite misgivings, lured by the chance to get a driver's license and qualify for in-state tuition in some states and to get a work permit.

Keish Kim, brought from Korea when she was 8, has been a vocal and active critic of a policy that effectively bars students who can't prove their citizenship or legal residency from attending Georgia's most competitive state colleges and universities. She's skeptical of the new program, but decided to apply.

"If I do get deferred action, I can legally work and help sustain my family financially," said the 21-year-old Syracuse University student. "That means a lot to a lot of undocumented families."

The government began accepting applications Aug. 15. The Migration Policy Institute estimates that as many as 1.7 million people could be eligible. By Oct. 10, about 180,000 people had applied and nearly 4,600 applications had been approved.

Throngs of young people have turned out at events nationwide where immigration lawyers have offered free guidance on completing applications. Still, some are concerned about signaling their presence to immigration authorities. And there are other obstacles: the $465 application fee and the extensive documentation required to prove eligibility.

Mohammad Abdollahi, 27, who grew up in Michigan after being brought here illegally from Iran at age 3, said he is concerned about applicants who might get rejected. The leader of many protests around the country said he doesn't plan to apply until the guidelines are more inclusive.

"Getting a work permit would help me," he said. "But I know there are so many other people who are not out and are not organizing that are not going to qualify or their applications are going to get rejected."

Many critics say the policy ? which they contend falls short even as a stopgap measure ? is a way for Obama to pander to the growing Latino voting bloc ahead of the elections.

"He got away with making it seem like he became our friend," Martinez said of the president. "I'm not going to drink the Kool-Aid."

Martinez has been arrested during civil disobedience actions in Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C., and recently purposely got herself detained in a federal immigration detention center in south Florida to gather stories of others locked up and to try to help win their release.

She is not applying out of principle, but recognizes her high profile may give her more protection from deportation than others. Her sister, who lives in a small town in North Carolina, has applied for the program to gain work authorization.

To be eligible, applicants have to prove that they arrived in the U.S. before they turned 16 and are under 30 years old. They must be high school graduates or in school, or have served in the military, and they cannot have a serious criminal record.

The requirements are similar to those of the failed DREAM Act, which would have provided a path to legal residency for many brought here illegally as children. The new policy does not provide legal status, and both protection from deportation and work authorization is only for two years.

Last spring, groups of young activists staged sit-ins at Obama campaign offices around the country and gathered signatures asking the president to issue an executive order halting deportations for anyone who would be eligible for the DREAM Act had it passed.

Some believe confusion about the new policy has ended up giving more credit to Obama than he deserves, and that more comprehensive reform may be shelved.

"I'm just afraid that people will push aside immigration as if it was addressed," said Kim.

The program is not an executive order, but rather a policy directive that will those who are approved in a state of limbo. They will also not be eligible for certain benefits that legal immigrants and American citizens can access.

For some, the cost is an issue.

Georgina Perez, a 23-year-old full-time college student with no job, wants a work permit, but she can't afford the $465 application fee.

"I was very cautious (when the policy was announced). I didn't celebrate it right away," said Perez, who came from Mexico when she was two and has helped lead immigration protests in Georgia and got arrested during a civil disobedience action last year. "Now I see that I should go ahead and apply for it, but there's another roadblock, the money."

Though many who have devoted themselves to advocating for the DREAM Act are disappointed, they see the president's program as proof that the movement is having an impact.

"This just showed the power that we have and the power of organizing to create some sort of change," said Maria Marroquin, 25, a pre-law student at Dominican University near Chicago who came to the U.S. illegally from Peru when she was 13.

Marroquin founded Dream Activist Pennsylvania in 2009 and was one of seven young people arrested when they sat down in a downtown Atlanta street in April 2011 as an act of civil disobedience.

She applied for the president's program last month.

Facebook gaming not ?doing as well as? Zuckerberg would like ...

Wed, Oct 24, 2012 | 23:46 BST

Facebook?s third quarter financial review included some telling comments from CEO Mark Zuckerberg on the state of social gaming in general and Zynga in particular.

?Overall, gaming on Facebook isn?t doing as well as I?d like,? Zuckerberg said during an earnings call, as reported by CVG.

The social network didn?t give details beyond this, although overall, Facebook notes a 32% jump in revenues but ended on a loss of $59 million (?37m).

Zuckerberg said that Zynga, which once brought in 12% of Facebook?s total revenue, hasn?t been as lucrative of late.

?Our payments revenue from Zynga decreased by 20% this quarter compared to last year,? he said.

?But the interesting thing is that the rest of the games ecosystem has actually been growing. Our monthly payments revenue from the rest of the ecosystem increased 40% over the past year since payments has been adopted. This evolution is pretty encouraging.?

Interestingly, Zuckerberg also noted that facebook will continue its push on mobile as that?s where its users are most engaged; Zynga is sensibly making a strong bid in the same direction, having painted itself into a corner where significant lay-offs were required.

  • Genius has been viewed two different ways: as achieved eminence and as exceptional intelligence. The former metric offers the more useful definition.
  • Genetics and life experiences both contribute to genius. Creative contributions can occur only after a domain has been mastered, but genetics can help a person improve faster and accomplish more with a given amount of expertise.
  • Genius can share certain potentially negative traits with the mentally ill, but when these traits are combined with specific positive attributes, the result is creativity rather than psychopathology.
  • A scientific genius has different expertise than an artistic genius, but all creative geniuses may depend on the same general process: blind variation and selective retention.

Identifying genius is a dicey venture. Consider, for example, this ranking of ?The Top 10 Geniuses? I recently stumbled across on Listverse.com. From first to last place, here are the honorees: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Leonardo da Vinci, Emanuel Swedenborg, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, John Stuart Mill, Blaise Pascal, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Bobby Fischer, Galileo Galilei and Madame De Sta?l.

What about Albert Einstein instead of Swedenborg? Some of the living might also deserve this appellation?Stephen Hawking comes to mind. A female genius or two might make the cut, perhaps Marie Curie or Toni Morrison. And if a chess champion, Fischer, is deemed worthy, other geniuses outside the arts and sciences ought to deserve consideration?Napoleon Bonaparte as a military genius, Nelson Mandela as a political genius or Bill Gates as an entrepreneurial genius, to name a few candidates.

84 million stars and counting: VISTA creates largest ever catalogue of center of Milky Way galaxy

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Using a whopping nine-gigapixel image from the VISTA infrared survey telescope at ESO's Paranal Observatory, an international team of astronomers has created a catalogue of more than 84 million stars in the central parts of the Milky Way. This gigantic dataset contains more than ten times more stars than previous studies and is a major step forward for the understanding of our home galaxy. The image gives viewers an incredible, zoomable view of the central part of our galaxy. It is so large that, if printed with the resolution of a typical book, it would be 9 metres long and 7 metres tall.

"By observing in detail the myriads of stars surrounding the centre of the Milky Way we can learn a lot more about the formation and evolution of not only our galaxy, but also spiral galaxies in general," explains Roberto Saito (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Universidad de Valparaiso and The Milky Way Millennium Nucleus, Chile), lead author of the study.

Most spiral galaxies, including our home galaxy the Milky Way, have a large concentration of ancient stars surrounding the centre that astronomers call the bulge. Understanding the formation and evolution of the Milky Way's bulge is vital for understanding the galaxy is a whole. However, obtaining detailed observations of this region is not an easy task.

"Observations of the bulge of the Milky Way are very hard because it is obscured by dust," says Dante Minniti (Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Chile), co-author of the study. "To peer into the heart of the galaxy, we need to observe in infrared light, which is less affected by the dust."

The large mirror, wide field of view and very sensitive infrared detectors of ESO's 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) make it by far the best tool for this job. The team of astronomers is using data from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea programme (VVV) [1], one of six public surveys carried out with VISTA. The data have been used to create a monumental 108 200 by 81 500 pixel colour image containing nearly nine billion pixels. This is one of the biggest astronomical images ever produced. The team has now used these data to compile the largest catalogue of the central concentration of stars in the Milky Way ever created [2].

To help analyse this huge catalogue the brightness of each star is plotted against its colour for about 84 million stars to create a colour-magnitude diagram. This plot contains more than ten times more stars than any previous study and it is the first time that this has been done for the entire bulge. Colour-magnitude diagrams are very valuable tools that are often used by astronomers to study the different physical properties of stars such as their temperatures, masses and ages [3].

"Each star occupies a particular spot in this diagram at any moment during its lifetime. Where it falls depends on how bright it is and how hot it is. Since the new data gives us a snapshot of all the stars in one go, we can now make a census of all the stars in this part of the Milky Way," explains Dante Minniti.

The new colour-magnitude diagram of the bulge contains a treasure trove of information about the structure and content of the Milky Way. One interesting result revealed in the new data is the large number of faint red dwarf stars. These are prime candidates around which to search for small exoplanets using the transit method [4].

"One of the other great things about the VVV survey is that it's one of the ESO VISTA public surveys. This means that we're making all the data publicly available through the ESO data archive, so we expect many other exciting results to come out of this great resource," concludes Roberto Saito.

Notes:

[1] The VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey is an ESO public survey dedicated to scanning the southern plane and bulge of the Milky Way through five near-infrared filters. It started in 2010 and was granted a total of 1929 hours of observing time over a five-year period. Via Lactea is the Latin name for the Milky Way.

[2] The image used in this work covers about 315 square degrees of the sky (a bit less than 1% of the entire sky) and observations were carried out using three different infrared filters. The catalogue lists the positions of the stars along with their measured brightnesses through the different filters. It contains about 173 million objects, of which about 84 million have been confirmed as stars. The other objects were either too faint or blended with their neighbours or affected by other artefacts, so that accurate measurements were not possible. Others were extended objects such as distant galaxies.

The image used here required a huge amount of data processing, which was performed by Ignacio Toledo at the ALMA OSF. It corresponds to a pixel scale of 0.6 arcseconds per pixel, down-sampled from the original pixel scale 0.34 arcseconds per pixel.

[3] A colour-magnitude diagram is a graph that plots the apparent brightnesses of a set of objects against their colours. The colour is measured by comparing how bright objects look through different filters. It is similar to a Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram but the latter plots luminosity (or absolute magnitude) rather than just apparent brightness and a knowledge of the distances of the stars plotted is also needed.

[4] The transit method for finding planets searches for the small drop in brightness of a star that occurs when a planet passes in front of it and blocks some of its light. The small size of the red dwarf stars, typically with spectral types K and M, gives a greater relative drop in brightness when low-mass planets pass in front of them, making it easier to search for planets around them.
