Next generation Internet | GB Planning

Fast, ?future proof? broadband internet access is critical to the future economic competitiveness of the Berkshires. While Great Barrington largely enjoys good, fast internet connections, many of our small town neighbors do not. What?s more, many of our most important institutions and employers need to spend inordinate amounts of money for dedicated lines with adequate speeds and bandwidth. If you want to help fix this problem, please, take the first easy step by filling in this online survey card.? It will take you just a few clicks of the mouse, and will mean a world of difference. Thanks, and please pass this along.

Here?s the original message from Wired West.

Great Barrington friends -

As many of you know, last year Great Barrington voted to join WiredWest, a municipal fiber-optic network being designed for 40 towns in Western Massachusetts. ?This state-of-the-art network will serve us for decades and will drive regional economic development, create jobs, improve education and healthcare, and enable a sustainable future for our communities.

WiredWest is finalizing the business plan, and one vital piece of information that?s needed is expressed interest in service from potential subscribers.?Over the next few weeks, WiredWest support cards are being mailed to households in participating towns (including Great Barrington) in order for residents to indicate their interest in internet, phone and/or TV/video services.? Alternatively, you may find it more convenient to complete the card online here.

It?s critically important that as many Great Barrington residents and businesses as possible express interest. The results will be used to support financing and in decisions relating to where and when towns will be wired. We know Barrington residents and businesses have other options with Time Warner and Verizon. Compared to those offerings, services on the WiredWest network will be affordably priced ? and will provide particular savings for businesses operating on T1 lines. But more importantly, the service quality will be dramatically superior to the alternatives. WiredWest will enable multiple users, and reliable high definition video streaming, telemedicine, distance learning, and business class applications like high definition teleconferencing and cloud computing.

And finally, taking service on the WiredWest network means fees for telecommunications service stay in our region. Every month when you send payments to other phone and cable companies, think about how much more productive it would be for our communities if that money went back into our local economy.

I hope you will also considering sharing the online link to the card with your fellow Great Barrington residents and businesses as well.

Let me know if you have any questions. I have included some information below about the benefits of a fiber-optic network. You can also learn more at www.wiredwest.net

?

Fiber-Optic enables many types of services and data to travel over one line:

? Fiber enables ultra high-quality internet, phone, video and other advanced services (home security, telehealth, distance learning, business class applications) over one line.

?

Enables better mobile phone service

? The major issue for wireless today is lack of sufficient backhaul to local towers. Ubiquitous fiber addresses that and increases the reliability of local cell service. It also enables home owners to create their own home-based cell sites.

?

Replaces aging copper infrastructure with new technology

? Less susceptible to corrosion, water problems or power surges from lightning and other sources, resulting in greater reliability.

? Allows for future evolution of technology and new applications.

? Fiber is far more energy efficient than copper.

?

Provides virtually unlimited bandwidth capacity

? One strand of fiber the width of a human hair can handle 13 million simultaneous phone calls. Its capacity, speed and reliability is orders of magnitude better than any other technology.

? Fiber provides access to more advance communications and data like streaming HD video and HD videoconferencing, and will be able to handle ongoing increases in consumer and technology demands.

?

Adds value to properties and communities

? Increase of home value by as much as $5,000 according to the Fiber-to-the-Home Council and other sources.*

? Potential for increased economic development due to the advanced technology available in the area.

? Rural customers can compete on a global scale in their work or business.
